Editorial Reviews
In 1967 Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie played in the legendary John Mayall & The Blues Breakers, and were given free studio time during which they recorded five songs. Peter Green was so convinced of this band´s musical prowess that he formed it on the spot and named it after the drummer & the bass player. John McVie, however, wasn't convinced yet, and it forced Fleetwood Mac to find a temporary replacement in Bob Burning. After a short while, however, he was as hooked on the Elmore James influenced British Blues that he left John Mayall to take a risk on a group of unknowns. The rest is history. Fleetwood Mac, the self-titled debut album, was released in 1968, and was one of the highlights of the late British Blues movement, climbing to the #4 slot in the UK album charts without producing one single, and managing to stay in the charts for 37 weeks. It was a traditional blues album true to form, but one that also showcased Peter Green's budding singing and songwriting skills. "I Loved A Woman" has a hint of the Latin Blues fusion he would perfect in "Black Magic Woman" a year later, while "Looking For Somebody" balanced humor and vulnerability that would come to characterize their style.

First album released by the "new" line up of Fleetwood Mac, the rest is history and this debut album sets the foundation of the greatness which was going to come.
RIP Christine McVee
As for the content, the music is great! I wound up with 6 established favorites from this disc: "Rhiannon", "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Landslide", "World Turning" and "Jam #2". The rest of the album proper is not bad, either. And there's also the single versions of "Say You Love Me", "Rhiannon", "Over My Head" and "Blue Letter". I found the album versions of these tracks to all be ultimately prefferable to the singles, but you won't hear me complain at all about being given a choice. "World Turning" proved to be a track that, prior to hearing it on this CD, I honestly can't recall when I heard it last, it's been so long, yet I recognized the tune, as long-lost from my conscious memory as it was, within the first, few seconds and then suddenly realized that I had never successfully placed it as actually being a Fleetwood Mac tune - a pleasant surprise for me. A treasure recovered. This track, all except for its driving, tribal-rhythm coda (think: a spark for the bon-fire that "Tusk" would later become), has a classic feel that almost plays like some sort of long-lost Zepplin jam, and that's not a bad thing at all, actually. And then, of course, there's the much-hearalded and sublime "Landslide" that must simply be one of the most heartfelt and deeply stirring songs of any rock decade.
As for the 2010 CD edition, this is a Japanese import (with obi strip - part of the "Forever Young" series). They have apparently used the previous 2004 remaster artwork as the template, so, I'm also presuming this CD is pressed from the 2004 remaster as well (though I can't prove that in a court of law). The CD does not list the technology used for the remastering (DSD, Bluray, SHM, 24-Bit, etc.), unless it's in the Japanese text (which is all Greek to me). If I had in my possession (or could even recollect any impression of, for that matter) the 2004 remaster, I could better tell you wheather this more priceyer version was worth the extra cash or not, but, I've never listened to it. As for the sound quality on its own, I can pretty much tell you: there just isn't much to criticize, here. This seems to me to be a surprisingly good edition of a 1975 recording, I can at least tell you that. No sonic performance area seemed suspect at all and the recording itself seemed to have a nice live quality to it that helped to treat me to the illusion of the group performing in front of me. I never dwelled on the recording (except long enough to study or marvel at it) and found myself easily and fully engaged by the performance and (without an A/B comparison to go on) I'm not sure how much better than that it can get. For me, a definite keeper.
Second, this is an amazing album. Not as good as Rumours, but full of strong songs and hits. You will not be disappointed.

A straightforward production & completed more quickly than Rumours &, more especially, Tusk. Aside from the singles, the album opens with the punchy "Monday Morning" immediately followed by the gorgeous ballad "Warm Ways". It's impossible to find a bad track.
Recommended for anyone who thought Fleetwood Mac only really got going with Rumours. This album will soon disspell that assumption
