Editorial Reviews

In 1967 Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie played in the legendary John Mayall & The Blues Breakers, and were given free studio time during which they recorded five songs. Peter Green was so convinced of this band´s musical prowess that he formed it on the spot and named it after the drummer & the bass player. John McVie, however, wasn't convinced yet, and it forced Fleetwood Mac to find a temporary replacement in Bob Burning. After a short while, however, he was as hooked on the Elmore James influenced British Blues that he left John Mayall to take a risk on a group of unknowns. The rest is history. Fleetwood Mac, the self-titled debut album, was released in 1968, and was one of the highlights of the late British Blues movement, climbing to the #4 slot in the UK album charts without producing one single, and managing to stay in the charts for 37 weeks. It was a traditional blues album true to form, but one that also showcased Peter Green's budding singing and songwriting skills. "I Loved A Woman" has a hint of the Latin Blues fusion he would perfect in "Black Magic Woman" a year later, while "Looking For Somebody" balanced humor and vulnerability that would come to characterize their style.

Great album but amazon shipped it in a plastic bag. Album came damaged. End up returning and bought it from a different online giant that delivered it in a sturdy vinyl box.

Decided to give vinyl records a second chance after 30 years because I won a Victrola record player, the album is great, but the record player is junk.
First album released by the "new" line up of Fleetwood Mac, the rest is history and this debut album sets the foundation of the greatness which was going to come.
RIP Christine McVee

Love this album.
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2010
I bought this content for the cuts that I was already aware that I knew and liked, but had never owned - even back in the day - although, I believe that's mostly because, as I recall, these songs were so frequent on the airwaves, (and for so long) in those days, it was likely that it was as though that in itself may have sufficed, to me, for not having the money to buy the record at the time, as I also seem to recall, that as a high-school student living in the days of the golden age of rock, I had 'ears far bigger than my wallet' pretty much all the time. I bought this CD edition because, over the intervening years, I have gradually acquired (by my own standards, anyway) a fairly nice HiFi and wanted to hear what this version had to offer, especially since I could find no reviews - even though stocks of it seemed to be dwindling only DAYS after its initial release. I figured I might better pull the trigger before the price went up (on the used market, Amazon sellers, ebay, etc.), assuming there would ultimately be no 'second wave' of supplies of it to hit the internet shelves. But, I figured I'd try it and see, despite its being rather pricey.

As for the content, the music is great! I wound up with 6 established favorites from this disc: "Rhiannon", "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Landslide", "World Turning" and "Jam #2". The rest of the album proper is not bad, either. And there's also the single versions of "Say You Love Me", "Rhiannon", "Over My Head" and "Blue Letter". I found the album versions of these tracks to all be ultimately prefferable to the singles, but you won't hear me complain at all about being given a choice. "World Turning" proved to be a track that, prior to hearing it on this CD, I honestly can't recall when I heard it last, it's been so long, yet I recognized the tune, as long-lost from my conscious memory as it was, within the first, few seconds and then suddenly realized that I had never successfully placed it as actually being a Fleetwood Mac tune - a pleasant surprise for me. A treasure recovered. This track, all except for its driving, tribal-rhythm coda (think: a spark for the bon-fire that "Tusk" would later become), has a classic feel that almost plays like some sort of long-lost Zepplin jam, and that's not a bad thing at all, actually. And then, of course, there's the much-hearalded and sublime "Landslide" that must simply be one of the most heartfelt and deeply stirring songs of any rock decade.

As for the 2010 CD edition, this is a Japanese import (with obi strip - part of the "Forever Young" series). They have apparently used the previous 2004 remaster artwork as the template, so, I'm also presuming this CD is pressed from the 2004 remaster as well (though I can't prove that in a court of law). The CD does not list the technology used for the remastering (DSD, Bluray, SHM, 24-Bit, etc.), unless it's in the Japanese text (which is all Greek to me). If I had in my possession (or could even recollect any impression of, for that matter) the 2004 remaster, I could better tell you wheather this more priceyer version was worth the extra cash or not, but, I've never listened to it. As for the sound quality on its own, I can pretty much tell you: there just isn't much to criticize, here. This seems to me to be a surprisingly good edition of a 1975 recording, I can at least tell you that. No sonic performance area seemed suspect at all and the recording itself seemed to have a nice live quality to it that helped to treat me to the illusion of the group performing in front of me. I never dwelled on the recording (except long enough to study or marvel at it) and found myself easily and fully engaged by the performance and (without an A/B comparison to go on) I'm not sure how much better than that it can get. For me, a definite keeper.

Record plays perfectly, sounds great. My 16 year old granddaughter loves it.

First, the album arrived in perfect condition in a well designed and protective package. It has a nice cardstock inner sleeve with printed lyrics. The album is thicker and heavier than all my other albums except a couple half-speed mastered audiophile pressings. The sound quality is impressive. Very nice.
Second, this is an amazing album. Not as good as Rumours, but full of strong songs and hits. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have now been able to replace another FLEETWOOD MAC that I lost years ago
Reviewed in Canada on July 2, 2023
When I moved to CD's I got rid of many LP's that I thought that I no longer needed. Many discs that I really should have held on to as it turned out. The original FLEETWOOD MAC disc is one of those discs and I am so glad to have it back as there are so many cuts on that LP which I needed to retain as it turned out. Rhiannon is the feature cut on the disc but it is only one, there are so many others on the LP which are worthy of keeping this disc. Well I have it back now and it will stay in my collection because I have a VERY GOOD TT to play the disc on and it won't get damaged now.

Despite being around since the mid-60's, this excellent, self-titled album from Fleetwood Mac that really made the band big in America.

A straightforward production & completed more quickly than Rumours &, more especially, Tusk. Aside from the singles, the album opens with the punchy "Monday Morning" immediately followed by the gorgeous ballad "Warm Ways". It's impossible to find a bad track.

Recommended for anyone who thought Fleetwood Mac only really got going with Rumours. This album will soon disspell that assumption
