Editorial Reviews
For the first time, a stereo remix from the 16-track multi-track tapes made it possible for Steven Wilson to bring out elements that were muffled or submerged in the mix. The result is a new stereo version of CHICAGO II that boasts clearness, punch and definition that it didn’t have before.

I have a SONY surround sound receiver with their speakers and sub-woofer, I surely wouldn't complain about either this performance or the recording. I don't hear any bad sound, none of the horns are missing, etc.
Just good music and it looks like they're having a good time of it, too!
I won't directly compare this to Quadio because they are apples and oranges; this is less about directionality and isolation (because of the two channels), but if you have weathered the many badly muted and poorly defined releases in the past, this will breathe new life into the album for you. Whereas I have felt CTA always sounded good to great in virtually every release from the early vinyl on, Chicago II paled in comparison in production value, which is unfortunate because to me, the Ballet suite is up there with side 2 of Abbey Road as far as the material.
This is not a drastic reimagining; Wilson did not play around so much with instrumentation levels to change the heart of the songs. I feel he was brilliantly successful in cleaning up and accentuating the things you naturally queue in to when listening, like the tambourine in Anxiety's moment, the drum breaks that thread through the Ballet suite often playing off Cetera's bassline.
It's hard to fault anything; vocals, horns drums and bass were all alternately brought out more clearly. On a personal note, Quadio made me want to lay back and enjoy the immersive sound while this made me want to crank it up to 11. Fantastic songs like In the Country and 25 or 6 to 4 have finally been given a worth soundstage. Horns sound like live horns, drums sound like live drums, vocals sound reasonably liberated. Great job.
I have been a fan of Steven Wilson for almost 15 years, starting with his work with Porcupine Tree. In my opinion there are very few musical artists today who rival Wilson's ear for not only creating great music but also adding new dimensions to long held classics. He has long done a fantastic job on his own catalog, both with Porcupine Tree and his solo work, to create both superb stereo and surround mixes. I think his work on remixing the King Crimson catalog has been nothing short of brilliant.
I first bought Chicago II a decade ago. As someone who grew up in the 80's most of my opinion surrounding Chicago was based on their slick pop incarnation but luckily at one point heard the Chicago Transit Authority album, this got me hooked on the band. I'll never forget when I first bought II I went on a road trip. My thoughts were what a fantastic album but what crummy sound. The CTA album sounded so much better, why did the second album sound stuck in a lagoon? It sounded like AM radio to me. So over the last decade I have gotten used to the poor sound. When I saw that Steven Wilson signed up to remix II I got very excited, to the point of expecting a new album by my favorite band.
I have played through this new remix twice already and I am very impressed. The clarity over the entire sound spectrum is much clearer. Danny Serphine sounds like he is playing actual drums instead of cardboard boxes and I can hear Peter Cetera's bass runs better than ever. Terry Kath's seems to be playing more guitar tracks than I imagined. From my first few listens my opinion is that Wilson nailed this and created the best mix of this album I have heard. I am very interested to read other's reviews on this album, those with a longer history than my own, and to see what their perspective is.
