If you see life through the realist lens, then NIN is for you. Trent doesn't sugar-coat anything in his music and I think it speaks to many Gen-X'ers who question a lot in society and life.

Sure, it sounds good but each side of this 3LP set breaks up this story into chapters, essentially.
When Trent Reznor said that vinyl is a better medium than digital and he prefers his music was listened to this way, I was skeptical. This is one of the premier digital artists basically poo-pooing his own medium, one he helped to popularize? Pshaw! said I.
I can kind of see why now, though. The quiets are quiet, the louds are loud. There isn't compression or any sort of trickery going on when I was listening to this album. It sounds superb. Of course, there's always a loss of fidelity when transferring digital to analog, and this will never beat the fidelity of the original CD. There is just so much going on in the background that one can barely hear. (see Rick Beato's YouTube series of "What makes this song great?" where he breaks down and isolates tracks and discusses them; compelling stuff!)
With that said, I think Trent had in mind the "loudness wars" that plague modern mixing when he said that; that is, people are listening to an artists' music on very crummy tiny earbuds.
There's none of that crap here. Even though I've been a fan for nearly 25 years, it gave me a greater appreciation of Trent's mixing and hard work.
If you're new in vinyl and a fan of NIN, definitely pick this up.
If you're new in vinyl and haven't been a fan, you will be.
