I'm a newer Faceless fan and this particular album is definitely my favorite offering. I see a lot of grumbling about it not being similar enough to the first two albums and the presence of clean vocals which is something I can get behind with other bands I've followed for a long time.

Planetary Duality and Autotheism are very good albums but compared to this one, they lack authenticity. The lyrics just seem much more personal and the music itself is much more varied and lends another layer of complexity which I enjoy. Technical death metal is much more fun!

To each their own, but I love the combination of styles on this album!

アメリカはロサンゼルス、エンシノで2004年に結成されたテクニカルデスメタル/プログレッシヴメタルバンド、THE FACELESSが2017年にリリースした4thアルバム。
THE FACELESSは非常にメンバーチェンジの激しいバンドで、中心人物でありGt./クリーンVo.（Ba.やKey.プログラミングも）担当のMichael Keene以外のオリジナルメンバーはおらず、ほぼMichaelのソロプロジェクトに近い状態になってしまっているが作品の質は高く完成された世界観とテクニカルだがクリーンヴォーカルも導入し比較的聴きやすい作風に仕上げている彼等の作品はデスメタルをそこまで熱心に聴くタイプでない人間でもいくらかとっつきやすいのではないだろうか。

THE FACELESSといえばかつてはデスコアバンドのひとつとして語られることもあったような記憶があるが少なくとも本作においてはデスメタル由来のブルータリティを感じる部分はあるもののデスコアらしさを感じるような要素は無く、テクニカルで不規則なドラムのリズムパターンや不協和音や高音弦も用いるギターリフと、キーボードによる美麗というよりは不気味でダークな味付けの施された楽曲、リードVo.のKen Bergeronによるややブラックじみたグロウル（一部で前任者のDerekも参加している）だけでなくMichaelによる渋く落ち着いたトーンのクリーンVo.も使用されたダークでプログレッシヴな特徴あるテクニカルデスメタルに仕上がっている。

一部楽曲ではシンフォニックメタル系バンドに匹敵するような重厚なオーケストレーションが用いられ、アルバム内ではピアノ、インダストリアルな香りもする装飾音も用いており、一口にテクニカルデスメタルと言っても様々な要素を混ぜ合わせた非常に得意な作風であると言えるだろう。
またこのテのジャンルに珍しくクリーンVo.がかなり多めに用いられており、ハイトーンなどは用いないがDEPECHE MODEのDave Gahanを思わせる色気のある中～低音域で楽曲に美しくも妖しげなメロディを加える彼のVo.は素晴らしい。ブルータルに喚き唸るKenのデス声も凄まじいがクリーンパートの存在感も大きく、振り幅の大きい展開の楽曲だけでなくVo.面でも美醜の対比そして明確な緩急がつけられていてとても聴き応えがある。

またDEPECHE MODE好きとしてはアルバム中程に配された"Shake The Disease"も見逃せない。
曲の流れや歌詞は原曲を遵守しているがしっかりとおどろおどろしいテクデス/ブラックメタル仕様でカヴァーされた本作は個人的に秀逸なDEPECHE MODEのカヴァーのひとつだと思う。
原曲は全くメタル要素のない陰りのあるシンセポップだがアルバム内でも全く浮いていない統一感のあるアレンジが施されているので何も知らずに聴いたらカヴァーだとは思わない人が多いのではないだろうか。高い質で忠実にカヴァーするのも悪くはないが、こうしたバンドのスタイルをしっかり反映させた大胆なカヴァーはやはり素晴らしい。

こんなに素晴らしい作品をリリースしたTHE FACELESSだが本作リリース後にMichael以外全員脱退（しかも2度目）という事態になってしまい、最近はライブ活動もままならない状態のようだが作品だけは良いものを作っているのでとてももったいない気はする・・・なんとか活動が軌道に乗る時が来れば良いのだが。
