Editorial Reviews
Legendary singer-songwriter and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Perry makes his long-awaited return with Traces, his first new album in nearly a quarter century.
The famed singer introduces Traces with lead track “No Erasin’” and reassuringly greets fans with the opening line “I know it’s been a long time comin’.” The track is an emotional homecoming, a familiar welcome from the iconic voice and writer of Journey's timeless, global hits including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms,” as well as the significant solo success of “Oh Sherrie” and “Foolish Heart.”
Perry says, “Putting 30 years into 10 songs has certainly been an emotional experience for me. I started writing and recording these songs with the creative freedom that I was the only one who would ever hear them. Along the way, I rediscovered my love for music. Each track represents traces of my past, but is also a hopeful look into the future. I invite you to listen with an open heart.”
Produced by Perry alongside co-producer Thom Flowers, Traces is the artist’s most vulnerable and honest recording to date, balancing tremendous loss with enduring hope and beauty. The album is a collection of nine original tracks that encompass the spectrum of human emotion, and also features a beautifully reimagined cover of The Beatles’ “I Need You” It is the work of an artist who has reconnected with his music in a new way.

But then I have always really loved the super group JOURNEY.!!
When I first heard JOURNEY Steve Perry's voice is what got my attention.
And the great rock & ballads he sang. This CD is more mellow kind of like rock ballads but the first listen I was completey drawn in very moving. And that voice it has hardly changed and the slight rapsyness only adds to the appeal of his voice. The musicians are amazing as well the guitars & drums ect awesome. I'm so glad to hear you again Mr Perry. Music has always been a soundtrack to my life taking you to many times in life good & bad. With family or friends. It paints a moving memory of all those moments I like that this album is more of a ballad or rock ballads style. Those who love music and ARTISTS that can sing don't need to be Steve Perry fans or JOURNEY fans it is just an absolute great album. I hope that the music starts to change and have music where the people are truly talented. The music in the last 20 years has not been good at a to me. And I like several genres of music from country to rock to easy listening to soul and ect. Love that STEVE PERRY is back and on top. #1 in rock let's support this great music. If you don't have the 2 disc greatest hits from JOURNEY you should get it. Steve is the lead on those songs. I won't listen to JOURNEY with the new guy. It's just not JOURNEY to me without him. And I remember when I bought STREET TALK back in the 80's loved hearing him solo. And his greatest hits you should get as well. But buy this great album amazing he still basically sounds the same wow. # 10 stars excellent may this album continue to inspire others and take a chance buy it.
This is going to be a classic definitely.
Thank Steve Perry welcome back looking forward to more in the next year keep that great voice & great songs comin.🎸🎹🎶🎵🎤🎶🎵🎙
And now we can thank the cosmic powers that be for the new music Steve has given us. This album reflects his head space before ("Most of All") and since the death of his beloved Kellie Nash. (This is based on the standard, and not the deluxe, which I have not received yet.)
Until now, I have only heard one album worth a listen done by someone who lost his wife: Bleibt Alles Anders by Herbert Gronemeyer. It was loud, raw, throbbing, and absolutely full of some dark, dark times for this man in a loud, gritty way that mimics the way he spoke about the loss of his wife.
And so it is for Traces and Steve Perry. Although it is not aurally loud like Gronemeyer's, it is just as much in your face. The raw, throbbing, dark spaces are just as loud in the simplicity of the way Steve Perry soulfully winds the lyrics and music around his pain like barbed wire to a prisoner.
My favorites: "No Erasin'," showcasing his vocals, "We Fly," with its ethereal feel, "In the Rain," which is a story set to music, "Sun Shines Gray," with its hopefulness.
People can bitch and moan that Traces is not a rockin' album or his voice has more rasp because of his age.
1. Yay for the rasp. Period. (Seriously, I wish I could sing anything on key. Having any rasp would be icing on the cake.)
2. Having already done whatever he needed to prove himself long ago, I don't think Steve gives two hundred pounds of fertilizer grade crap. He did what fulfills him and what he feels, which is damn good for us.
3. Well, duh? It makes sense when The Voice is profound he goes for the ballads. His voice has withstood time with the same delightfully raspy voice I, er, we love. "Sun Shines Gray" is more upbeat and conveys the feeling of coming out of the darkness, so there you go.
With Traces’ heartfelt lyrics and harmonies, it clearly shows Steve has not forgotten where he comes from musically, where he's been emotionally, and where he's willing to go in both arenas. I look forward more from Steve Perry.
Steve could sing the phone book and I'd love it, so maybe I'm biased. But I love everything about this new CD. His voice still moves me to tears. And I love the rasp he's developed with age. I recently lost both my parents, so the lyrics and the emotion in his voice are particularly poignant. His loss is palpable - it's obvious he loved Kellie so very much. The standouts for me, particularly at this time in my life are "We're Still Here," "In the Rain," and "We Fly." But I also love "Sun Shines Gray," "No Erasin'," and "No More Cryin'." I can't wait to buy the CD with the extra tracks. I hope Steve sees and believes how beloved he is by so, so many fans. WE'RE STILL HERE!!
