Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. The groundbreaking British band's eighth studio album and first new album in nearly three decades. Founded by visionary singer/lyricist Richard Butler and his brother, bassist Tim Butler, The Psychedelic Furs are among the most significant and lasting bands of the post-punk era. Made Of Rain sees the band returning to the fray as relevant and original as ever before, fueled by their always innovative sonic approach and Richard Butler's evocative, masterful songwriting. Produced by longtime associate Richard Fortus and mixed by Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2, Robert Plant), magnificent reiterations of The Psychedelic Furs distinct, desperate wall of sound, melding haunting melodies and driving rhythms with ambition, aggression, and subversive lyrical power.

It only took thirty years, but who’s counting? What an outstanding collection of songs! It’s so rare when I can listen to an album, start to finish, with absolutely no regrets. This is one of those rarities. The Butler Brothers and their band mates are in top form! I feel like a teenager all over again. Get this NOW!!!

I'm looking through Amazon the other night, and I decide I want to see how much a new copy of "Midnight to Midnight" on CD and/or mp3 would be. I put in the epic band's name in, and wow, a brand new studio album is out!!??!!??!! The first studio album since the masterpiece "World Outside" in 1991. I saw them in Chapel Hill, N.C. that year, and they were completely amazing. Now, 29 years later, I am blessed to have a brand new album from one of the greatest bands of all time! I immediately order it and get to listen to it that same night on the downloaded mp3, and the CD arrived just 3 days later. Of course, "Made of Rain" is phenomenal! Richard's voice sounds almost exactly like it did all the way back in 1982 when I first became a fan. The production is excellent and the songs have a big, deep, and wide sound. It is obvious that they still have their passion and love for their art, and they succesfully create another iconic album. The songs are dark, defiant, delightful, and dynamite! All the things we Furs fans love so much about the band's music. The Butler Brothers have never disappointed, and they don't disappoint on "Made of Rain." Richard's beautiful and magnificent voice just puts a big grin on the faces of us Furs fans. Tim's bass is deep and booming. The keyboards, drums, saxophone, and guitar parts are blended in phenomenal Furs fashion. The songs are about concepts and thoughts pertaining to the human experience. This band is still just simply amazing. They are number 4 on my top ten greatest bands of my lifetime list. The wonderful surprise of "Made of Rain" arriving in this year of 2020 reminds me as a preacher, and all of us as music fans, that God is always up to something good. And, "Made of Rain" is something very good; a brand new full-length studio album from the talented and magnificent band we know and love: The Psychedelic Furs! (Rev. Dr. Barry A. Allen, South Carolina).

The Psychedelic Furs were one of those bands it was cool to like in high school and college -- they had crossover appeal, from the goths to the popular kids and just about everyone in between. But I found their albums to be a bit "thin" -- maybe fun to listen to a few times, but then rather boring and repetitive too soon. Same for their "hit" songs -- like candy that tastes great at first, but then you realize how shallow and insubstantial it is.

"Made of Rain" is an "adult" album -- mature, sophisticated, and deep. In fact, on first listen I was reminded of Peter Murphy's magnum opus "Deep." Repeat listens affirm the association. I am also reminded of "Wish" and "Disintegration"-era efforts by The Cure (which are still my favorite). There are also hints of The Charlatans UK (when they were at their best).

I don't love every song on "Made of Rain," but I do love the overall flow and feel of the album. Amazing to think it has been 29 years since their last release! These guys have obviously been around the block countless times, which is reflected in the layers upon layers of production value that goes into each song, artfully woven with the pensive and provocative lyrics. Along with the singles, "Ash Wednesday" is one of my favorite tracks.

Like a fine wine, The Psychedelic Furs have improved and matured with age. Time will tell whether this was a one-off or if further substantial offerings could be forthcoming. I certainly hope so!

I remember seeing the video for "Love My Way" in 1982 on MTV as a nine-year-old. I liked that song, but the band got lost on me, so that by 1984, when they had "The Ghost in You" I was on to other things, but I always remembered them. In 1987, they had their biggest U.S. hit with "Heartbreak Beat" which I clearly remember as a 14-year-old. That was it. Their next two albums didn't make waves, though I was aware the band continued to release new albums. I also remember in the 90's that they disbanded and Richard Butler went on to form Love Spit Love, and I remember hearing "Am I Wrong", but it wasn't enough to get me interested. I was surprised they had a second album in 1997. Then, nothing. Until 2006, when I was vaguely aware of Richard Butler's solo album.

To be honest, I was surprised to see a new album after 29 years. I looked to see who was in the band now, and saw that it's basically the Butler brothers, which doesn't quite make The Psychedelic Furs. Yet, when you hear Richard Butler's vocals you can only think of them.

With 29 years between albums, and half a new band, you can bet that they sound 'different'. However, I listened to all of their albums, including the two Love Spit Love albums before listening to "Made of Rain". I was unable to get my hands on a copy of Richard Butler's solo album due to its exorbitant cost and extremely limited availability. I mean, there's no digital download? Really? For an album released in 2006?

Anyway, like I was saying, I have all of the band's albums now, and I was listening to all of them in sequential order. I agree that "The Psychedelic Furs" (1980) and "Talk Talk Talk" (1981) are pretty good albums, but "Forever Now" (1982) is their crowning jewel. "Mirror Moves" (1984) was decent enough, but "Midnight to Midnight" (1987) is very weak. The same goes for "Book of Days" (1989). However, "World Outside" (1991) was a return to form. "Love Spit Love" (1994) was decent, and "Trysome Eatone" (1997) was only okay.

So here's "Made of Rain", a surprisingly good album. I've listened to it many times now, and while I don't think there's a bad track on here, there are also no outstanding tracks, either. Everything sounds good, the lyrics are interesting, but perhaps its the absence of original band members John Ashton (guitar) and Vince Ely (drums) that's missing here. There was chemistry in that original band. "Made of Rain" doesn't quite have that chemistry, but the songs are still decent. I think I like "You'll Be Mine", "Wrong Train", "This Will Never Be Like Love", "Come All Ye Faithful", "Tiny Hands", "Hide the Medicine" and "Stars" the best, but the other tracks are pretty solid.

"Made of Rain" is good enough to warrant another album, I think. Again, it's pretty good for a band that's not produced new music in 29 years. Here's how it compares to The Psychedelic Furs other works:

1980 The Psychedelic Furs: Three and a Half Stars
1981 Talk Talk Talk: Three and a Half Stars
1982 Forever Now: Four Stars
1984 Mirror Moves: Three and a Half Stars
1987 Midnight to Midnight: Two and a Half Stars
1989 Book of Days: Two and a Half Stars
1991 World Outside: Three Stars
2020 Made of Rain: Three and a Half Stars

Love Spit Love:

1994 Love Spit Love: Three and a Half Stars
1997 Trysome Eatone: Three Stars

2006 Richard Butler: Can we get a re-release for those of us who missed it the first time around please?

We saw the band recently in San Francisco-killer! That prompted me to buy their latest album and what a treat it is. I’ve liked this band for close to 40 years and this is the best album they’ve ever released. All their records had high points but this is the most cohesive and interesting record ever. The addition of the new guitarist, saxophonist and keyboardist make all the difference. Excellent songs, playing and production combine to make an always good poppy new wave band into a great grown up rock band. Get it!
