Editorial Reviews
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. The groundbreaking British band's eighth studio album and first new album in nearly three decades. Founded by visionary singer/lyricist Richard Butler and his brother, bassist Tim Butler, The Psychedelic Furs are among the most significant and lasting bands of the post-punk era. Made Of Rain sees the band returning to the fray as relevant and original as ever before, fueled by their always innovative sonic approach and Richard Butler's evocative, masterful songwriting. Produced by longtime associate Richard Fortus and mixed by Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2, Robert Plant), magnificent reiterations of The Psychedelic Furs distinct, desperate wall of sound, melding haunting melodies and driving rhythms with ambition, aggression, and subversive lyrical power.

"Made of Rain" is an "adult" album -- mature, sophisticated, and deep. In fact, on first listen I was reminded of Peter Murphy's magnum opus "Deep." Repeat listens affirm the association. I am also reminded of "Wish" and "Disintegration"-era efforts by The Cure (which are still my favorite). There are also hints of The Charlatans UK (when they were at their best).
I don't love every song on "Made of Rain," but I do love the overall flow and feel of the album. Amazing to think it has been 29 years since their last release! These guys have obviously been around the block countless times, which is reflected in the layers upon layers of production value that goes into each song, artfully woven with the pensive and provocative lyrics. Along with the singles, "Ash Wednesday" is one of my favorite tracks.
Like a fine wine, The Psychedelic Furs have improved and matured with age. Time will tell whether this was a one-off or if further substantial offerings could be forthcoming. I certainly hope so!
To be honest, I was surprised to see a new album after 29 years. I looked to see who was in the band now, and saw that it's basically the Butler brothers, which doesn't quite make The Psychedelic Furs. Yet, when you hear Richard Butler's vocals you can only think of them.
With 29 years between albums, and half a new band, you can bet that they sound 'different'. However, I listened to all of their albums, including the two Love Spit Love albums before listening to "Made of Rain". I was unable to get my hands on a copy of Richard Butler's solo album due to its exorbitant cost and extremely limited availability. I mean, there's no digital download? Really? For an album released in 2006?
Anyway, like I was saying, I have all of the band's albums now, and I was listening to all of them in sequential order. I agree that "The Psychedelic Furs" (1980) and "Talk Talk Talk" (1981) are pretty good albums, but "Forever Now" (1982) is their crowning jewel. "Mirror Moves" (1984) was decent enough, but "Midnight to Midnight" (1987) is very weak. The same goes for "Book of Days" (1989). However, "World Outside" (1991) was a return to form. "Love Spit Love" (1994) was decent, and "Trysome Eatone" (1997) was only okay.
So here's "Made of Rain", a surprisingly good album. I've listened to it many times now, and while I don't think there's a bad track on here, there are also no outstanding tracks, either. Everything sounds good, the lyrics are interesting, but perhaps its the absence of original band members John Ashton (guitar) and Vince Ely (drums) that's missing here. There was chemistry in that original band. "Made of Rain" doesn't quite have that chemistry, but the songs are still decent. I think I like "You'll Be Mine", "Wrong Train", "This Will Never Be Like Love", "Come All Ye Faithful", "Tiny Hands", "Hide the Medicine" and "Stars" the best, but the other tracks are pretty solid.
"Made of Rain" is good enough to warrant another album, I think. Again, it's pretty good for a band that's not produced new music in 29 years. Here's how it compares to The Psychedelic Furs other works:
1980 The Psychedelic Furs: Three and a Half Stars
1981 Talk Talk Talk: Three and a Half Stars
1982 Forever Now: Four Stars
1984 Mirror Moves: Three and a Half Stars
1987 Midnight to Midnight: Two and a Half Stars
1989 Book of Days: Two and a Half Stars
1991 World Outside: Three Stars
2020 Made of Rain: Three and a Half Stars
Love Spit Love:
1994 Love Spit Love: Three and a Half Stars
1997 Trysome Eatone: Three Stars
Richard Butler:
2006 Richard Butler: Can we get a re-release for those of us who missed it the first time around please?
