I've never been a huge PL fan but I've always respected the quality of their output . I've always favored My Dying Bride ( and still do ) but Paradise Lost have caught my ear with their past three albums . The bonus tracks on the digipak are two of the best songs . The band have added a few nuances to make the album fresh and are experts at their craft . I wouldn't say I like this more than Medusa or The Plague Within but it's the third home run for Paradise Lost . Obsidean is a seamless blend of gothic rock , death metal and doom ; the production is excellent . Check out the awesome new Godthrymnn album , too !

I think this is their best effort since 2007's In Requiem. While I liked a handful of songs off Medusa I thought that was their weakest album since way back to Shades of God. Due to that my expectations were a bit subdued but I should have known to never doubt one of the best bands!

One of the best albums of 2020. Came in a digipak version including 2 bonus tracks, exactly what I was looking for!

This is a step up from Medusa and a return to the sound PL is noted for. To say that the band is Goth-Doom is simply to pigeonhole them. They have a unique sound that speaks for itself. Not a bad track here.

The second Doom and death metal inspired band to get a perfect score this year. Paradise Lost comes from a different angle than Katatonia did but still manages to astound. Great atmosphere and vibe.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Paradise Lost album in a long time
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 14, 2020
Here's the bar; my favourite metal album of recent times is Architects' Holy Hell so will Paradise Lost's latest offering be able to steal that accolade? Well, I'm quite "happy" (note, this isn't a happy album!) to put this at the top of Paradise Lost's recent output - it's definitely their best album in long time, so that's a good start. It combines the doom of recent albums with the 80s goth references of earlier albums and also (similarly to the aforementioned Architects album) combines both the clean vocal style of 1990s Paradise Lost with the gruff, growls of their last few albums to good effect. In fact the whole album does a very good job of combining pretty much every face of Paradise Lost (with the exception of their "Host" incarnation) into one album. Don't get me wrong, it's by no means an incoherent compilation of styles, every track on the album feels like it belongs there (except perhaps for the two additional tracks on the limited edition version which bring nothing new to the party and were clearly left off the album for a reason) and the album as a whole gels excellently, but don't buy this album expecting a re-run of One Second although if you listen close enough you might just be able to hear references to it but they are few and far between - despite Nick's occasional return to clean vocals, this is a dark and heavy album.

So, back to my initial challenge, has Obsidian knocked Architects' Holy Hell off the top spot of my favourite metal albums of recent years? It is a good album, a very good album in fact and I'd say the best Paradise Lost album of the last 10 years, and one that I'm no doubt going to be coming back to for a long time, and so I'd say it has the potential to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention pépite !
