Editorial Reviews

Iconic frontman and instrumentalist MYLES KENNEDY (Alter Bridge, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators) proves that tumultuous downtime can spark creative genius with The Ides Of March – the long-anticipated full-length follow up to his 2018 solo debut, Year Of The Tiger. The Ides Of March once again showcases the organic side of Kennedy’s musical spectrum and one-of-a-kind voice, but while bright inclusions of lap steel and mandolin have replaced some of the pummeling kick drum and downtuned electric riffage his other renowned projects are known for, each of its offerings maintain the same steadfast energy that never relents. Fluxing between heritage rock outcries featuring Jimmy Page-worthy solos, and stripped-down, bluesy beckonings, the album manifests as an uplifting refresher arriving when society needs it most. Lyrically, the album’s 11 unique offerings embrace all listeners, championing themes of unity and solidarity over separation and spite, allowing the sonic warmth of each track to stand out. Opening stunner “Get Along” proves itself as an anthem for the times, giving listeners a hard-rocking first dose of MYLES KENNEDY’s iconic vocal attack and guitar prowess, ushered along by an addictive hook: “Why can’t we all just get along?” The album rocks and twangs with timeless spine-tinglers like “A Thousand Words” and slide guitar-laden lead single/future classic “In Stride”. Kennedy slows it down with triumphant, smooth vocal knockout “The Ides Of March”, topped with a jazzy guitar solo and poetic lyricism crooning for camaraderie in our darkest times. Raucous blues-rocker “Wake Me When It’s Over” and passionate, ethereal “Love Rain Down” astound, while earworm lead-ignited “Tell It Like It Is” and swaying sing-a-long standout “Moonshot” successfully mark Kennedy’s “dual-citizenship” in the realms of rock and country inspiration. Acoustics, mandolin and slide guitar pepper the soft benevolence of “Wanderlust Begins” and classic rock-inspired wakeup call “Sifting Through The Fire”, before bluesy success “Worried Mind” provides the listener with one last slab of verification that MYLES KENNEDY is an undeniable talent for the ages. The Ides Of March doubles down on the charging roots rock vibes of its predecessor while exuding an aura of tenderness and inner peace – radiating the sorely needed, uplifting spirit of Americana rock.

Great songs, great vocals. This album is amazing and well worth the money. I think the same can be said with all albums Myles Kennedy is involved in and getting this now just makes me upset I missed his show in Nashville when he came through town...

I was reluctant to buy this CD because the last 3 to 4 Alter Bridge albums have been monotonous, relentlessly noisy metal - with no melody and dystopian lyrics. I loved their first 4 albums. I'm glad I took the risk and bought this Myles Kennedy disc. I saw him live in 2018 with the same bass player and drummer and they are an outstanding trio live.

Kennedy is one of the best hard rock singers in the business and he has a trained resonant voice with an above average range and tone colors. His voice is distinctive and he stands out from the rest of the current rock singers. There aren't many great rock vocalists today. Chris Cornell was one of the best - Myles sometimes sounds a little like him although Cornell was a better lyricist. Robert Plant was the best hard rock singer I've ever heard live when he was in his prime. He's been past it for decades and should retire gracefully (like Grace Slick was wise enough to do) and stop arrogantly dismissing his legacy with Led Zeppelin - his supreme achievement as an artist. Adam Lambert has a superb multi octave range and sings all the Queen repertoire effortlessly.

This new Myles Kennedy CD is very good - the material is consistently thoughtful and well crafted, it's well produced and the CD audio is first rate and full bodied. Don't waste your money on an overpriced warped vinyl disc full of pops and clicks that will deteriorate quickly!

I am an eighty-yeal-old fangirl for Myles Kennedy. I used to be sure that Robert Plant was the God of rock singers but Myles has him beat. He could sing the ABC's and bring years to your eyes (and moisture to other parts of female anatomy). I love the intimacy of acoustic guitar with his voice but he can kill it in "wall of sound" numbers too. Would recommend this highly.

So, Kind of catching up here. I just recently listened to Slash 4, and while I loved some of their earlier work, I found 4 just kind of generic and moving through the paces. That led me here to Myles most recent effort. I love it. I find the music and vocal work more capturing. I like the different elements brought into this album. I believe Myles is responsible for much of the instrument work on here, and I like it. I had no idea. The first three songs really lured me in. They are a couple that drop out for me, but overall a great body of work, and will be keeping an ear out for future Myles Kennedy material.

He has a very soulful bluesy sound when he is out on his own. He has great creativity and it shows on his solo stuff. Don’t get me wrong, when he plays with Slash or Alter Bridge, his style and voice are out there. It’s just when he gets off all to himself, he has a unique style that will open up your senses.

This album really has some great songs- loved "In Stride" and "Get Along" before the album release. But honestly, the title track is the one that sold me on it. Very well done, Mr. Kennedy.

"The Ides of March" is the 2nd solo album by Alter Bridge frontman, Myles Kennedy. Not forgetting the singer/guitarist from Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and he conspirators. Myles musical projects just keep coming and he seems to have found a nice operating rhythm of balancing all his projects. With the pandemic it seems with the lack of touring Myles has found himself (like many others) more creative than ever which means fans are reaping the rewards. But what does "The Ides of March" have to offer?"

The title track on the album and the second single "The ides of March" certainly is a standout for many reasons. At first, I thought it might be a shoutout to Iron Maiden who also have a track of the same name. But it represents the 74th day in the Roman calendar, corresponding to the 15th of March, which appropriately is the day this song was released in 2021. It really is a mammoth of a song too. Sitting at 7 minutes 30 seconds its up there with some of the longer songs Myles wrote with Alter Bridge and that's both in terms of length and quality.

But while its easy to compare this length of song to the likes of Stairway (Led Zeppelin) and Blackbird (Alter Bridge). And Stairway vibes can be felt in the opening notes of the track. Myles pulls away from that as the guitars kick in properly. The first couple of versus sound like it should be a soundtrack to a James Bond film. Then there is a long and winding guitar solo. But I think the thing I love the most about this song is the seamless transitions between the different sections of the track. Before the long guitar solo for instance, it's almost as if you are climbing up a ladder to the start of the solo. It works well. Then to finish the song there is another small solo before returning to how the song starts to finish off.

So, if "The ides of March" is the "Blackbird" of the album. What is the "Rise Today" or "Before tomorrow comes" (also tracks from Alter bridge's 2nd album "Blackbird"). Well roll up first, the first single to come from the album "In Stride". This track symbolised the more up-tempo and upbeat direction Myles was heading in with his second album as he plus in his electric guitar in comparison to his predominantly acoustic debut "Year of the tiger". "In Stride" has this killer riff using the slide guitar to great effect. I thought this was so good as despite all the bands and projects Myles has worked on over the years. With his solo stuff he has still managed to create something which is separate and has it's own sound which is a great feet.

I would say "Get Along" is the "Rise today" of the album as well as being a great tune. It's the one that really has a powerful message and is the way Myles is trying to communicate with the world as he sings "Why can't we all just get along". There are many great moments on this album as well as these key tracks. I would say my favourite has to be album closer "Worried Mind" which has some great guitar work in it. It's not all up-tempo, for example "Wanderlust" and "Love Rain" down are some of the slower tracks on the album but still just as good.

Overall, Myles continues to set such a high standard really in whatever he touches. I think his Alter Bridge band mate Mark Tremonti often steals the limelight when it comes to his guitar process, but Myles proves here that he is such a talented musician and songwriter.

Disco molto bello, Myles non smette mai di stupire e da il meglio di sé su tutte le tracce e spazia in tutti i generi, blues compreso. Nettamente superiore alle ultime due uscite degli Alter Bridge.
