All the songs are great. I can't stop singing them in my brain when I'm not listening to the album. The last two songs seemed better when the band polished them off for the final cut.

I read the feedback, took in both the positive and negative reviews & then proceeded to listen in full, totally objective...and my take is that DSH is an inspired work, with great songwriting, singing/harmonies, musicianship, variety, experiments that work & cool production ideas. In all, this record has much in common with other pandemic albums like the amazing Sarah Borges' "Together/Alone", where each bandmember did their parts at home in their home studio setups all over the globe, then their producer Ronan McHugh pieced it together in HIS home studio in Ireland, and he made it sound as if the whole band were recording & playing live in the same room...technology is incredible sometimes...
There are 15 great originals, and the sequencing adds to the whole experience, with a double vinyl in mind, like 4 songs per side, one only 3, 3 upbeat tracks, then a slower one, switch sides...so you begin with the 3 amazing pre-release promo singles in "Take What You Want", "Kick" & "Fire It Up", which show their musical inspiration in early 70s UK glam rock in Bowie, Sweet, Mott, Slade, T.Rex, Roy Wood, etc...makes sense the album title right?? From "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" & the cool cover artwork matches too. Then the band makes an unexpected left turn into alt-country with "This Guitar", featuring lovely harmonies from acclaimed bluegrass singer/musician Allison Krauss (first of 2 appearances here and a known hardcore Def Lep aficionado)...and wouldn't you know it?? The collaboration works!! I was not gritting my teeth trying not to cringe!! This is better than anything played on horrific Nashville country radio & could we see Def Lep appearing on a future Outlaw Country Cruise?? That would be fun!!
The we move on to "Side 2"..."SOS Emergency" sounds like a fresh twist on previous rocking powerpop DL songs, both familiar and new...then "Liquid Dust" which (don't take this the wrong way) reminds me of one of the best songs from 2002's "X", "Torn To Shreds", which don't mind as I love that song & it adds new elements to keep it fresh, like a neat drum loop...then the Slade-title-influenced "U Rok Mi", which could have been an eye-roller, but the song is catchy & cool with a great beat...then the side-ending "Goodbye For Good This Time", featuring epic strings and piano from Mike Garson who played for years with Bowie...and it does have a Bowie influence mixed with 70s Elton John & nice twists & turns...
On to "Side 3"...a nice 1-2 punch in the great powerpop twins "All We Need" (with a great message we can all use) & "Open Your Eyes" which is structurally pretty original mixed with accessible hooks, not unlike the same-titled song by Todd Rundgren's 60s band the Nazz... then the cool hardrocking "Gimme A Kiss That Rocks" which resembles 80s DL and not in a tired cliched way either...then the side-ending epic string-laden emotional almost proggy semi-ballad "Angels (Can't Help You Now)"...
And finally, "Side 4", which might be the shockingly best "side" on the whole album, a total surprise...the amazingly written powerpop song "Lifeless", with the second appearance by Allison Krauss, and she sounds great on songs like this, not just alt-country/bluegrass...then comes the shockingly biggest highlight on the whole record, "Unbreakable"...hoo boy...I did NOT expect this!! Starting with a riff that resembles ELO's "10538 Overture", then Joe sings his verse with a total poker face, the the beat kicks in, that THAT CHORUS!! I almost fell over in shock...it's a hidden gem tacked on at the end...a mix of powerpop tuneful manna and a cool dance beat...and JOE ELLIOT WROTE IT HIMSELF!! The man is a genius with impeccable taste...that song I can call it now, could be possibly the best song of the year, one of their best-ever songs AND one of the greatest songs EVER WRITTEN...yes I am serious!! Then the album ends with the amazing epic "From Here To Eternity" which is good enough that it does not feel like a letdown anticlimax after the genius "Unbreakable" (which might be one of Joe's best-ever vocal performances ever...that song is as great as their best albums in "High N Dry", "Pyromania" & "Hysteria"...plus "Slang" & "Yeah!!")...that song instantly elevates "Diamond Star Halos" to Def Leppard's Top 5 albums...albums 2, 3 & 4, plus "Slang"...and "Yeah!!" is like #5A cuz it's a covers album...
And this Target edition has cool coloured alternate artwork, preferred packaging in a cardboard CD wallet, not a jewelcase (I HATE jewelcases!!) & 2 bonus tracks...an "Avant Garde" mix of "Goodbye For Good This Time", which is as good as the album version...and lastly, a "Joe-only" version of "Lifeless", which strips off Allison's harmonies...works both ways, partly because it's a great song, period...now, I played the album straight through, and the songwriting, the performances, the variety, cool production touches, made for repeatable plays...and it sounded even BETTER the second listen...and hearing "Unbreakable" again?? WOW!!
I will be playing this album a LOT...Joe wasn't kidding when he called this album a quantum leap forward...and if the band sounds this good and inspired doing this album remotely?? Keep it going!! Two final things...yes I read that Vivian Campbell didn't do any writing on this album, but he did great guitar work on it...but it's fine because the songs are amazing & didn't feel there was a Vivian hole in it...lastly, Rick Allen, I read the credits...where did he record his parts & did he record any drums on it at all?? It didn't show where his parts were recorded...and it showed that producer Ronan McHugh did a LOT of drum programming on thee whole album...ummmm, where is Rick?? But Joe is a confirmed genius now, Phil is amazing, Sav's bass, harmonies & creativity really shine on the whole album, and Viv does great work, even if none of his writing is on it...
All I say is...what a record...and the naysayers really should listen again...or at least start with "Unbreakable" and let them fall over from their seats & slap their foreheads in shock...and too many ballads?? Ummm no, 4 out of 15 is totally fine...just saying...and we need variety to keep our attention and not have one huge rocking blur...
