This HAS to smoke!

This HAS to smoke!
I grabbed this cd a long time ago at Aquarious Records' Mission St. store in S.F. (circa 1988) along with Blue Murder's self titled cd out of a dollar bin and couldn't have been more impressed with the QUALITY of Graham Bonnet's vocals, classic cover tunes done METAL STYLE and of course, the lead guitarist/wizard's impeccable chops. This is like..HIS FIRST ALBUM, basically and it is at the same time melodical and heavier than S#*%!!! (bargain price OR NOT..once I heard it I would have paid 10.00 for this even back then!!).Way to bring it back with bonus tracks I hope it's even louder than it's predecessor!!
Thank you for your feedback

Great album. A true classic. High energy, good production even for the time, Impellitteri has an old school Malmsteen-esque thing going on here, but it's more hard-rock than gothic in places than an old Malmsteen record Even so, there is a similar feel to a lot of the material on here to Rising Force-era Malmsteen material. If you haven't heard this and you are into the old school metal with virtuoso guitar solos (sweep picking, technical/classical approach to it all), mostly upbeat (almost high-speed in places) tempos, and a clear singing voice with some serious power in the pipes (not angry howling or raspy crooning--not that those are bad things), then this is right up your alley. Contains some use of synths--nothing overbearing and all quite right. Worth what you pay just for the Stand in Line single, but everything on here is great. Moody where it is slower, powerful and invigorating where it rocks. It's worth mentioning that this album is a little quirky, too. Covers "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as an instrumental that somehow works along with that old radio-player "Since You Been Gone" (which also rocks on here something fierce).. Impellitteri pulls what should be a too-eclectic collection of titles and musical concepts into an entirely cohesive whole that you really need to experience. And Graham Bonnet. 'Nuff said there. If you are only familiar with the more contemporary Impellitteri material, this is a different ride, but a real great one. Also, in case it matters, this record lacks any overt or covert (that I am aware of) references to Christianity, which flies pretty fiercely on certain other works from Impellitteri; this one is more about the music for the music's sake, I suppose. The other works are better for their message, but don't hold it against Stand In Line too much.

I love Impellitteri. This is the first of two albums that have the former Rainbow and Alcatraz singer on them. While I dig the music, I have to be in the mood for his vocal style. It's like Brian Johnson from AC/DC... meets the power of James Hatfield with the bluesy touch of... David Coverdale? It's hard to describe, but to compare him to sounding like just Brian Johnson isn't right or fair. The musical style on this album is DEFINITELY different than most Impellitteri. Chris himself has mentioned in interviews that he was going for a tribute to the vocalist's musical history, and that he wasn't happy with how low in the mix that the producer made his guitar.

THE GEM OF THE ALBUM, and the main reason I bought it, is the cover Chris Impellitteri does of Somewhere Over the Rainbow (instrumental)! It isn't included in the Amazon Music Download or streaming version of the album!

Short version: If you think you would dig the hard rocking era of Whitesnake with a vocalist who sounds a lot like Brian J. Coverdale (fictional name that fits, lol), then BUY IT!!!!
My sincere apologies for not remembering the singer's real name. No disrespect intended. All I can remember is the last name is Benoit.

Chris Impellitteri has always been blasted as 'the Yngwie clone'. Anyone playing classical/exotic scales very, very fast in the '80s was labeled with that tag. Yeah, a couple songs remind you of YJM, but 'Tonight I Fly' and 'Secret Lover' is not even close. Bonnet on vocals just fits this album perfectly, blending with Chris' playing on every song. 'Rainbow' gets hacked-on, but I thought it was fitting considering Chris' tragic childhood; perhaps his Grandmother played this for him to make him smile (who knows..it has some righteous shredding in it throughout). Probably my favorite shred album (non-instrumental) of all-time. Maybe if YJM's 'Rising Force' had a better vocalist, I may say otherwise. But CI can definitely play in the Shawn Lane zip code.

This CD rocks so hard! It not only includes the best Impellitteri CD ever but it has bonus tracks from there first CD.

Back in the 80's a young Swedish guitar player Yngwie Malsteen came out with the band named Alcatraz and changed the way modern metal guitar players play. Inspiring 101 copy cat bands. The difference between Impellitteri and those bands is that the songs are actually good. Chis has his own style and rocks like the best of them. Not only that but Gram Bonnet from Alcatraz is on the CD!

So i had this cassette years ago, and lost it...lately I've been recollecting much of my collection (digitally) that i had on vinyl and cassette..and this was one of them. The title track is just a great song (even though it is one of Yngwie's favorite chord progressions!). The rest of the songs are pretty standard fare for this genre of metal..the slow grinders, the uptempo double time romps, and so on. Chris is a virtuoso, no doubt..perhaps one of the fastest around (along with Michael Angelo Batio, though MAB seems to be a bit cleaner and have more clarity)

Where the improvements can be made are in the production..Chris' solos are absolutely buried in the mix and laden with so much delay and reverb that many times you can barely make out the notes. Even the rhythm guitar is washed away by the keyboard on some tracks...(think Rush: Signals). I actually ripped this CD and used a graphic EQ in an audio editor to try and 'fix' the mix, basically raising the mids, dropping the high end and boosting specific bass frequencies..this actually made the tracks more palatable and brought the guitar out a little more...

Also the solos do tend to be dishearteningly similar (fast lick, bend note, arpeggio, bend note, another fast lick, bend note etc...)

Bonnett does a great job with the vocals, he has never sounded better! All in all, not a bad CD but some flaws that , to me, keep it from being a masterpiece

I bought this specifically for the beautiful cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. But I always liked the other songs when I had this on cassette back in the day.

What a great version of such a classic song. never thought it could sound like that. Other songs are very good. Have not stopped listening to it for a day. Will keep on listening to it for another day or to. The bonus tracks are a little like racer x. Got to get more

I had this album I was younger on cassette. I missed it and now I have it on CD. Awesome rock guitar, similar to Malmsteen I guess, but that's for you to compare. Stand in line is one of those songs that just gets in your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grande Impellitteri!

Ottimo album! Eccellente la cover dei Rainbow "Since You've Been Gone".

so begonnen hat!?
