Similarly, when the Spanish came to conquer the Americas, horse riders were viewed by Native Peoples as a two headed 6 legged monster..or even gods. Here too the Spanish capitalized on that shock, while Native Peoples gradually killed off the Conquestadors And their horses. When that happened the Original Peoples adopted the art of horse riding ---and they too have their "Horse Legends". The plains tribes became legendary Horse Warriors and Hunters. The blood lines of the original Spanish horses introduced in the Americas, and bread by the Original People l runs strong to this day in the west and southwest - to this day. And that is a "True" legend.
Remember that the tale of Hercules was written down in a time when writing was still novel, "literate" people were still very rare, even kings and queens likely could not read or write a word. Aaah scribes. What has come down to us are just scraps and pieces that has somehow survived time. That similarly the oral traditions - the racial memory - were already dimmed by immense time.when they were set to stone and vellum. We are no better than the scribes and historians of that ancient day - we can only catch a glimpse - and mourn what was lost for the telling of even more ancient days.and Not recorded.
In Ancient Greece (cradle of Democracy) many were the families that claimed direct lineage to Hercules. It was these people who commissioned the writing of the Oral story of Hercules. Even that version of the story that has come down to us,(and others like ir) still informs and in part directs our notion of Freedom and Democracy even as it did in days of old.
This is a thoughtful, intelligent, action packed story of Hercules. However it is told, the message is the same, Battle evil, find courage and strength in persistence, strive for better lives for you and your people, battle evil for in the end you choose your fate and like Hercules -become a Hero.
We are a civilized people, our best weapon of choice IS the written word, negotiation, petitions, even your vote.....The pen is mightier than the sword. These days the battles for good are no less fierce than the Labors of Hercules, but the lesson is still the same -for persistence in the face of insurmountable odds, persistence and courage fighting the good fight- Will Prevail. Be a Hero. Vote in this Democracy that was born in the days of Hercules.
Oh yeah. This is a Must watch. Avery good movie.
The movie plays hard into the myth vs reality and I have to applaud the legitimate effort. Playing with the true supernatural vs plausible deniability isn't strictly new, but it's a consistent effort throughout the film and I appreciate the attention to detail required to pull it off. Ian McShane's addition to the cast is a big winner here, he adds a lot to blur those lines. Casting overall is actually very good and they're all used appropriately. Notably, "the girl" warrior doesn't have a dumb romance plot, the Hero is actually strong, the bad guy does bad things. All the beats are there.
The action is pretty good. It does drift over-the-top when Hercules throws dudes 15+ feet routinely -especially problematic given the myth/reality theme. The big sequences are pretty standard lazy Hollywood composition but the smaller sequences of Dwayne Johnson mauling dudes bring it back. Again, the attention to detail with pieces of stone breaking on impact and CG blood & cuts is nice. It's too bad this is PG-13. Overall, a decent Hollywood action movie that doesn't cheap out even as it's playing by the numbers.

All in all, very enjoyable.
