Product Description

Steelbook containing DVD and Blu-ray.

Twenty years after its release, Illmatic has become a hip-hop benchmark that encapsulates the socio-political outlook, enduring spirit, and collective angst of a generation of young black men searching for their voice in America.

Time is Illmatic tracks the musical legacy of the Jones family, handed down to Nas from his jazz musician father, Olu Dara. It also examines the social conditions and environmental influences that contributed to Nas' worldview.

Along the way, Time Is Illmatic shows how Nas - with the support of his Queensbridge neighbourhood crew, the loyalty of his younger brother Jabari "Jungle" Jones, and sacrifices of his mother, Ann Jones - overcame insurmountable odds to create the greatest work of music from hip-hop's second golden era.

Obviously, NAS needs no introduction. However, if you'd like a bit insight into the mind and life of a true Hip Hop icon then you need to see and own this film. In addition to getting a closer look at NAS; kudos go out to the everyone that made this movie a reality. Well done!

Nas is StillMatic! This piece was a time travel through an era of hip hop that Nas definitively reigned and sets him apart as a legendary icon of the times. Its been 20 years since his first album IllMatic, wow. I still bump joints off of it to remember my youth and the old hood. I watched this doc soon after seeing him live at OneMusic Fest in ATL and it added another level to the experience of his music, lyrics and street wisdom. It was like reliving the feeling you got the first time you heard joints like REPRESENT, IT AINT HARD TO TELL and indelible verses like "..I sip the Dom P watching Ghandi till I'm charged/writing in my book of rhymes all the words pass the margin...". I really appreciated some of the accurate back story of Nas' emergence and also some personal stories that you thought you knew something about through the music, but was never quite clear ie ILL Will, OLU DARA. To be recognized as a poet laureate of our time by Harvard professors is an amazing leap not even Nas himself thought was possible. Great documentary, I hope he makes one for his next album. BRAVEHEART FOR LIFE!

This was an excellent documentary. Very well made, very informative. As someone who has listened to Illmatic countless times over the years I can say that after watching this documentary I now have even more love for the album. It's a lot of good features in this documentary, too. Lots of the MCs that were featured on tracks or produced tracks on Illmatic like Q-tip, Large Professor, Pete Rock, etc.

This is worth every penny and I plan to watch it many, many times! If Illmatic is one of your all time favorite albums you should really watch this. Also, Nas is still lookin GOOD. Daaaamn!

As a big fan of 90's hip hop, I have always viewed Nas as one of the greatest rappers of all time. However, as time passed along, Nas's classic hits has sort of gone out of the mainstream and he is not as visible as he once was. This movie will bring you a new found respect about Nas as it reminds us of why he is so great, and why so many people in the world regard him as a Queensbridge lyrical street genius. I didn't know Ill Will, Nas's best friend, died in front of Nas and that is pretty crazy. Good Movie! The movie also gives props to the MC Shan vs KRS ONE battle which everyone should listen to. Basically KrsOne killed Queensbridge with his lyrics, and Nas resurrected his area to fame again.

A worthy companion piece to one of the greatest Rap albums of all time, Time is Illmatic follows Nas as he journeys back to Queensbridge and brings to vivid life the stories which inspired his debut record, Illmatic. Nas' tales are always fascinating and his storytelling skills which have always been razor sharp in his music only makes this portrait, especially the early sections where discusses his relationship with his father, all the more powerful and engaging. Like the album which inspired this documentary its brief (a mere 74 minutes), to the point and all the more admirable for how it packs a life of wisdom into such a short space. It is done in a rather standard documentary style but it certainly works, its well shot and Nas is likable as always and its great to hear what inspired almost every track on Illmatic (if "Halftime" does get neglected).

Inspiring story of growth ..elevation...
I heard in a story once - that Nas- Nasir Jones of queensbridge, new york..-- was supposedly " thrown out of church" for making fun of the holy ghost..the holy spirit.., Now - although That might be considered or called - blasphemy"...
As if God don't forgive-?..for nas not knowing or being taught of _/about thee holy ghost...holy spirit...instead nas was taught of the 5%nation of gods...rightfully so.yet the holy spirit .Whom..he asked.in 1 of his albums songs " to save him'""-? ..yet he married a pk..preachas kid- kelis.. now also a wonderful chef...
God could have healed his mom of the cancer..1 of the gifts of the spirit...I hope many are called..to get healed..& chosen.. nas should have experienced healing in the form of seeing his mom healed..that's what I believe..

If you are a big fan of NAS you will definitely want more. His life and his story is in his albums so you can get your answers there. I really enjoyed finding out more about his childhood and how Illmatic came to be, you will really enjoy this and probably go buy some albums or download some songs to get the whole story.
