Which is translated to "A Good Beginning" in English. Not only is it a good beginning but one of the most solid and complete debut albums that very few artists can match up to. This album is astonishing, Powerful, and Inspiring. At about the 5th through 10th listens, I had a few thoughts. I thought maybe a few things on this album are just a 'gimmick' such as the 'deep' sounding guitar playing with a cello bow, the abstract cover art, the singing all in Icelandic, and even the vocal style itself, just so it seems mysterious or something. Well, that is certainly not the case. I can listen to this CD from beginning to end with immense enjoyability, even if the songs seem to drag on a bit. Sigur Rós manage to get a sort of 'unearthly' and very creative type of overall sound (with the characteristics I mentioned above) which will keep you coming back for more, even if it seems very unusual on your first few listens.
Sigur Rós uses a variety of instruments, such as pianos/keyboards, violins, and the occasional trumpets. The sweet piano melodies in "Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása," "Starálfur," and the title track are unforgettable. The melodies played on every song is just brilliant. The violins in "Starálfur" are the most emotionally conveying instrument and are used in most other songs too which bring such a warm feeling. The lyrics are very unusual, and I don't think i fully understand them (when translated) but they certainly aren't immature or meaningless.
This album will require a very open mind and a listener who can appreciate what the band is doing. It can seem very overwhelming at first. To start off, the songs that amazon[.com] has avalible for download are good, especially the title track. "Svefn-G-Englar" might seem slightly repetitve on first few listens, so it's not really a good impression of the album as a whole. But Overall, the album should be appreciated as a whole more then an individual song. Some complaints are it sounds too repetitive or boring. It is atmospheric. Sigur Ros is a band that pours heaps of feeling into what they play and are actually true musicians who love what they're doing. Keep an open mind and you shall be rewarded and suprised.

I love this album, it's one of my favorites. Unfortunately one of the records was a little wonky. The hole was slightly tight, and I had to remove some of the the vinyl to get it to fit on my turntable correctly. I was too lazy to return it and wait for a new one to arrive.

Sigur Ros came into their own on this release, one whose most successful tracks are centered around heavy drones created by using a violin bow to manipulate the strings of an electrified guitar that is heavily channeled through what sounds like a ridiculous amount of reverb and delay. "Olsen Olsen", one of the outstanding tracks from this release, uses this same effect to great advantage, though it is much more "compact" than "Svefn-G-Englar", which is accretive in the way it builds dynamic tension, and uses the heavy drone to alter its spatial quality, so that it yawns into crescendo and builds toward explosiveness.

Lead vocalist Jonsi sings in a falsetto that practically pitches his range into that of a modern-day castrati, and the phrasing on each cut is somewhat sensitive, sensual, plaintive, and emotive. His lyrics have never been decipherable and aren't even delivered in his native language (Icelandic), instead sung in a glossolalic hybrid he dubs "Hopelandic". Strings, piano, and keyboard are often responsible for creating some of the richest of the gentler, more atmospheric moments, some of them quite mournful in nature, others joyous and transcedent.

Over three hundred other people have reviewed `Agaetis Byrnum" by this point, and if you happen to be reading mine, it's because it happens to be the most recent. This isn't a purchase that you should make if you like tidy, three-minute hook-laden pop songs; many of the tracks take time to unfold and sprawl in length. I can tell you that it's an evocative, emotional release that is warm at times, glacial at others, but with a universal genius readily apparent when it comes the construction of each track, and a gift at deconstructing and re-interpreting how each one is presented. Start here with Sigur Ros.

With nearly 300 reviews of this CD already written, and no one but the most deranged fan willing to read more than a few, why add another? Well, because I suspect there are listeners other than myself who look and listen and wonder how to decipher all the woozy praise or hysterical hatred. Besides, of course, buying the darn thing and listening.

I have been a fan of Sigur Ros for over 4 years, having been exposed to them by my daughter, who thought this right up my alley. And she was blindingly right. I have witnessed them twice live. This is amazing stuff. Now, not everything they do is amazing....some of it is rather pedestrian. Tedious. A little embarrassing. Even Mozart wrote uninteresting music. But there is nothing dull on this CD. It is transcendent and intoxicating. Their consistently best work to date.

I do not believe snippets or scraps can really capture what this can do. You need to immerse yourself into the world they create, a sonic palace of bizarre digital noises and weird little drones, a wispy little vocalist and a breathtakingly brilliant percussionist, and savor it all. Unlike anything else, and unrelated to anything else, it stands on its own as something worth experiencing and enjoying.

Sigur Ros is like a Jackson Pollack painting. Often when you look at a Pollack, not a print but the real thing, you wonder what the heck he thought he was up to. He got paid for that? But sometimes Pollack hit it perfectly; he took the same old swirls and drips and spatters on every painter's dropcloth and produced something gorgeous and permanent. This CD has all winners on it, a flow and a movement using the the most elementary, and often most repetitive, little sounds and weaving and blending them into a tapestry of endlessly surprising and often unimaginable beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars The epitome of genre-less music

Many reviewers have stated that this album changed their lives, and I’d be lying if I didn’t agree with this bold statement. If you’ve yet to hear Sigur Ros, I can guarantee that your first experience will be awkward and even uncomfortable. This is due to their approach and more so how they arrange their songs, especially here on Agaetis Byrjun, where it initially feels like a rock symphony that adds elements of electronic and classical instruments to create a lush, soundscape that you’d hear on a film’s soundtrack or at a yoga studio. This description is only a fragment as to what Sigur Ros truly sound like, as they are so much bigger and dare I say spiritual to be boxed into the limitations any kind of musical genre. To elaborate, I’ve probably listened to this album dozens of times, and to this day, each listen produces a different emotion or connection to the musicality as this is what the band does best.. They create music that makes you feel, whether you want to or not, and more so whether you understand the lyrics (or not). The latter is because the Jonsi’s ‘language’ is entirely and intentionally fictional, being equal parts Icelandic, English, and gibberish. At the end of the day, the nature of the lyrics are inconsequential because they’re more of an additional instrument than they are a structured language. The brilliance behind this is that you don’t have to understand the meaning behind the words to fully enjoy the music.
So, if you’ve been on the fence with Sigur Ros, I couldn’t think of a better album to begin with. And if you’re a vinyl collector, this release in particular is a true gem as it is pressed on thick 180-220g audiophile worthy wax that sounds lush and vibrant. Do yourself a favour and grab this album as I promise you’ll thank me later. It truly has changed the way I appreciate music and has made me a diehard Sigur Ros fan.
