Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2018 release. Call the Comet is the third studio album by British guitarist - and former Smiths member - Johnny Marr. Call The Comet was constructed in sessions at Marr's own Crazy Face Studios in Manchester. "'Call The Comet' is my own magic realism," says Johnny Marr. "It's set in the not-too-distant future and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too. It's something that people like me can relate to." Call The Comet is the follow-up to his 2014 album Playland.

My favorite Marr solo album
Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2020
This is my first experience with Johnny Marr solo. I had heard two singles from this album, Hi Hello & Walk Into The Sea, on YouTube, and they worked their way into my subconscience.
I am very pleasantly surprised. This album is nearly perfect to me. There is not much variety here, but the blueprint is right up my lane. The music is dreamy and diaphanous. It leaks out of my speakers and swirls and whirls around the room. It gives the feeling of shoegaze, but it is not shoegaze. The vocals and lyrics blur under the waves of the music. This album gives impressions, and just flows for a remarkable 12 songs.
I wish I had seen this tour. I just wasnt able nor willing to spend the $60+ to attend. Now I think it may have been worth the price.
Hands down, the best Brit guitar pop rock I've heard in almost 2 decades.

On the 3rd studio album under his name, the former Smiths guitarist delivers another batch of well-written & immaculately produced, soaring indie pop/rock tunes. Marr doesn’t have Morrissey’s voice, but his vocals are more than adequate, and his guitar—while never the only focus—shines through with a refined brilliance. His real strength may simply be that he uses his natural talent to full effect: presentation, arrangement and quality of songwriting all sound like the work of a consummate professional. His songs tend to grow on you slowly; their genius is subtle, becoming more obvious with repeated listening. The music is expansive; full of edgy atmospheres, synthesizers that complement the guitars, and more than a hint of classic rock song structure. The songs on “Call The Comet” ring with an underlying majesty and depth of feeling. You’ll want to hear them more than once. Recommended.

I am a big fan of the music itself, but that is rather personal to comment on. I just wanted to throw in my two cents on the quality of the vinyl pressing for those considering a purchase. First thing to note is that it does come with a download card, so you do get a digital copy too. More importantly though, it is a nice quality pressing and sounds excellently mastered. There are six songs per side, which is quite long, so I did have to boost bass a little compared to some shorter records. However, this is never a problem for me if I can get a distortion free track toward the end of each side, and I have to say there is no perceivable drop or inner groove distortion. I am very happy with my purchase, and it really is such a great record too.

This album is my favorite thing Johnny Marr has done. I first heard The Tracers late at night when it popped up prior to the album's launch on some Indie website. I was immediately hooked and I thought - This is It. I don't know exactly what "It" is, but this album has....it. Especially the last song, A Different Gun. It reminds me of the first time I heard Johnny's guitars on Electronic's "Get the Message." It feels like it comes from that same space of expanding light and warmth and power. A masterpiece. All the songs have Johnny's signature complex arrangements, multiple melodies and hard-hitting riffs. Nobody does it better. This is his most poetic and profound work to date. Well done, Dude, and Thank You for another gem to add to the soundtrack of our times.

Johnny Marr's solo group is really one of the best bands in rock today. And it's not just his guitar playing. He has become a very capable vocalist and an even better songwriter. I did not think he would be able to top Playland, his last album. But WOW, this album really blew me away with the creativity, energy and songcraft. I actually prefer listening to this album over some Smiths records. There literally is not a single throwaway track on this album. This man deserves awards and sold out arenas. He really is like a fine wine, just getter better with age!
Thank you Mr. Marr for sharing your immense talents with us.

Price was brilliant

Only issue was I pre ordered it and received it weeks after it was out in stores.
Pre ordering should get you an lp on release that’s the point of pre ordering.
