Founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in 1988, Sub Pop Records is a medium-sized independent record label based in Seattle, WA. With early releases by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and TAD, the label is often associated with something called “the grunge movement.” Exploitation of this association has frequently proven financially fruitful.
At Sub Pop Records, it is our intent to market and sell the recorded music (and related merchandise) of artists whose music some shifting definition of “we” really and truly love. We mean to represent these artists as faithfully and diligently as possible and hold out hope that this is enough for us to remain solvent in the face of the well-documented collapse of the music industry at large. We also enjoy laughter, good times and the company of friends.

Editorial Reviews
Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. Shabazz Palaces' Black Up, the group's Sub Pop debut, was recently hailed as one of the best albums of the decade by outlets like Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, and Variety. Pitchfork summed it up thusly: "Black Up is drowned in murky instrumentals and bombastic, introspective rhymes. The sounds flirt with jazz but also root themselves in a firm understanding of silence, or the sparse magic of simplicity. The songs teem with unexpected climaxes... From great mystery exploded an album of impossible vision." That "impossible vision" has continued to confound and engage Shabazz Palaces fans over the course of four acclaimed albums and two EPs. Each release feels like an evolution, letting the music speak for itself, while slowly revealing more about it's creator. With The Don of Diamond Dreams, the group's fifth album, that spirit remains, this time embracing modernism in hip-hop and rap. Featuring 10 tracks in 43 minutes, the album features the highlights "Fast Learner (ft. Purple Tape Nate)," "Chocolate Souffle," "Bad Bitch Walking (ft. Stas THEE Boss), and "Thanking The Girls." It also features contributions from singer/keyboardist Darrius Willrich, Seattle's OCnotes (who collaborated with Shabazz leader Ishmael Butler on the Knife Knights project), Los Angeles musician Carlos Overall, and bassist Evan Flory-Barnes. The Don of Diamond Dreams was recorded throughout 2019 and produced by Shabazz Palaces at Protect and Exalt: A Black Space in Seattle, mixed and engineered by Erik Blood at Studio 4 Labs in Venice, California, and mastered by Scott Sedillo at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles.

This album isn't as experimental as earlier ones, however through their experimentation they've managed to create a fresh-sounding and incredible feat of music. I dislike only two of the songs, but the rest are not only good, but also have their own character. If you're sick of listening to the same old rap/hip hop with the same tired tracks and beats, then get this album. 8.7/10. Not as perfect as "Black Up," but a close second on my list.
Long Version:
Shabazz Palace gets my respect for not conforming to entertainment norms. When I listen to their music, you can tell it's comprised of skilled artists who love music. They try things with synthesizers I've never imagined could be done, and in the case of albums like "Black Up" it is a collection of hits. Still, being early, the problem with experimentation is you're walking through such unknown territory, you really don't know what to expect.
To me, "The Don of Diamond Dreams" is what happens when after all that experimentation, you finally apply it to make something wholly unique and great.
While their prior albums are more along the lines of "enjoy by yourself while relaxing," Don of Diamond Dreams is more of "you enjoyed this stuff? Well now get your friends involved and prove their doubt wrong." Although for my taste I don't like when autotuning is used, in their case they've managed to make a fresh spin on the synth and own it. One of the reasons I enjoy Shabazz so damn much is their strive to make something fresh and new, just so we as listeners know without a shadow of a doubt what it can offer.
Shabazz is known for their incorporation of Jazzy sounds and relaxing/chill synthesizing tracks. You can expect a lot of this still in Don of Diamond Dreams. It really does have a matured feel to it, like something that's been aged just right.
Maybe I am only scratching the surface of experimental hip hop. Hell I dislike most rap...but that opinion is slowly changing as I hear more from Shabazz Palaces.
Congratulations, guys. You're one of a few bands I listen to that actually gets steadily better as newer albums come out. Just think where you'll be in 10 years?! Probably making amazing synth sounds out of ice cracking off a windshield or some crap like that. Who knows....I'm not the genius here.
8.7/10 - Most of this album is filled with quality. Looking forward to future albums.....even if their cover art looks like it went straight to DVD...lmbo.
