Last winter, it was announced that XL acquired RH's complete catalog and would be "reissuing" everything on vinyl, to be available mid-May. Many of us pre-ordered the new XL pressings of some classic RH records, and when we received them we were disappointed to find that they were the older Capitol Records versions, not newly mastered & pressed by XL.
We soon learned that XL acquired Capitol's back inventory of RH records, affixed their own barcode to the shrinkwrap (covering up Capitol's barcode), and sold them under their own label.
Sooner or later, this back inventory will be depleted and XL will have to press new copies.
Should we wait for the new XL pressings? For me, no. I recently purchased A Moon Shaped Pool on vinyl, which is truly an XL Recordings product. I'm not impressed - my copy has issues, and according to user forums I'm far from being the only one with a bad copy.
So I was happy to come back here and buy the Capitol / Parlophone version of Hail To The Thief.
These Parlophone pressings of HTTT are very quiet, perfectly flat, and sound great. Plus, for the price of standard 33rpm vinyl you are getting a 2-LP near-audiophile 45rpm pressing on heavyweight vinyl. If you want HTTT on vinyl, the Capitol / Parlophone version here is the best one you can get right now, and it's not at all clear the eventual XL pressing will be any better (and might be worse).
It’s a great pressing, the mix is solid, there are no pops on mine. I couldn’t be happier with it.
I received my copy and all was intact. The record sleeve/gatefold seemed in great condition. I pulled the first disc out and it was ok. No warps..extremely minimal scuffing.
The second disc...pretty much the same. EXCEPT it looked as if it was dropped on the floor or something. Big cracks or a jagged edge. There wasn't any loose pieces in the sleeve so I don't know what happend.
I'm pretty sure it happened at the pressing plant where the record was made and someone just didn't care enough.
It really doesn't affect playback but who wants to buy a new record and see this?! Maybe if it was a used copy and the price was right...but not new. I hope the replacement that's on it's way is in better shape, there won't be any issues and this was just a one time mistake.
Besides that...Radiohead is amazing and so is this hail to the thief.
