Editorial Reviews
Let's Get It On is the thirteenth studio album by Marvin Gaye. Serving as Gaye's first venture into the funk genre and romance-themed music, "Let's Get It On" incorporates smooth soul, doo-wop, and quiet storm. It has been noted by critics for its sexually suggestive lyrics, and was cited by one writer as "one of the most sexually charged albums ever recorded." Continuing with its vinyl reissue campaign, UMe will be reissuing this classic on 180 gram vinyl.

The songs on this wonderful album are about more than just love making and "baby making" music, this was a man who was obsessed with understanding the deepest part of what sexuality and sensuality were all about. Even within the title track, which most assume is totally about getting on with just sex, he talks about the sensitive nature of all people who are just looking to love and be loved and that sexual expression is an offshoot of that and not the necessarily the core of what relations should be about.
"Please Stay (Once You Go Away)" is a not only a song about a lovers longing to be with his partner but also the security and nurturing that partner brings to that individual. Marvin deals with the physical as well as emotional side of the topic of love while understanding that it's the spirit behind it that truly makes it worth while and lasting. "If I Should Die Tonight" is one of the most beautiful songs he ever wrote, this is an anthem for true love, the finding and appreciation of it.
There are clear sexual overtones dealing with pure passion such as the powerful "You Sure Love To Ball" which was way ahead of it's time with the groans and moans of lovers in the heat of passion. But even that song is sung from the point of view of lovers acknowledging true, deeply connected union to one another. Marvin, I think, was always somewhat haunted by the idea that he would never truly experience that kind of love here on Earth. Perhaps that's why, in many ways, this brilliant man was such a tortured soul as he longed from something that was too deeply spiritual for most to understand.
His albums from the 1970's were, in many ways, his autobiography. He was more open and honesty about his true self maybe than any other artist in history which is why I believe his songs stir up such incredibly powerful emotions in the listener. When you listen to his material from that time, he talks about life, love, fear, loss, betrayal, heartbreak, failures and death. The opening up of his soul is what led to so many wonderful songs and I thank him for being brave enough to share parts of himself, in his music, that very few have ever done.
I love the message marvin left inside as well.
Thirty seconds into Let's Get It On, I was no longer worried about that. If What's Going On was a stately forest, Let's Get It On was walking out of the forest into a beautiful glen on a warm spring day. It has warmth, depth, an expansive presence. Marvin's voice is a distinct presence, full of a rich timbre. I need to listen to this again and come write a fuller review, but I will leave it with this for now. The best sounding track for me was Distant Lover, giving something close to the "right there in the room" dynamic.
One of my friends who was there said when he returned from reloading his drink, "I'm not a Marvin Gaye fan, (no he was Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple) but his golden voice, and the texture of the accompanying music is so tasty, I would have no problem listening to this multiple times." Right on!!!!!
The cover art is from the studio album.
The performances are enjoyable. The sound quality is not better than good; there’s a lot of distortion. And the mastering is loud. Still enjoy listening to it, but was disappointed that it wasn’t the studio album.
