The music is challenging, beautiful and fun yes David has a wry sense of humor and it comes out. The packaging is genius and in one fell swoop surprises and challenges the purchaser with a blank slate - as if to say here's some blank pages for you ...go ahead create something. Love it! Its easier to criticize than conquer the blank slate.... point well taken - although "you" creative types will probably seize the opportunity. Who else would put actual profit at risk to drive the point home about creativity and present an opportunity for each of us to create. That's what David has been talking about all along - create a universe, create a story, create a mood, create a "you", live your life by creating. Well done David! I scooped up this Next Day set, Black Star and Nothing has Changed and have been gob smacked by the aural sensations David has left us to enjoy in his absence. I remember Duane Allman talking about how cool it was for a musician to take the time to capture and preserve their creativity on wax for those of us who couldn't make the gig. I think I know what he was getting at - much like Vincent or Bernard Shaw producing gifts of creativity for those of us who are creative and creatively challenged to enjoy, contemplate or be provoked by. Brilliant!

I did however have a problem with the discs not playing on this Next Day 2 CD/1 DVD set. My player wouldn't recognize the discs and it took an extraordinary amount of finagling to finally get them to play - I'm hoping my replacement set works better. I did not have that problem with Black Star or Nothing Has Changed - just reporting this out in case anyone else has experienced the same problem. Other than that Brilliant David and thank you...!

When Amazon posted this as a recommendation for my musical tastes, I was reluctant. I didn't check this out until after the 'Extra' was released. Then I scanned through the songs and was pleasantly blown away! A reviewer had said that The Next Day was Bowie doing Bowie and I whole heartedly agree! Bowie is in his mid 60's now and uses it to his best advantage. Some songs, you hear it in his voice, yet he also reaches for those high notes that we remember and hits them! The music is fantastic: it's as if he has taken everything he's learned over the years, even the Deram recordings, and painted us a mosaic in musical form, every aspect starting with the doo wop of the 50's and right on up to the latest electronica. Favorite songs? I downloaded the music so don't have the back cover to look at, but take your pick, they are all infectious, but in a good way! The ten minute remix is also fun to listen to. The cover is that of the Heroes album with a white square over it with The Next Day printed on it. I'll have to dig out my old copy of Heroes to see if there is some sort of pattern going on here, but for right now, this is all the Bowie we'll need! .

I'm mostly just glad that this EP is available separately, having of course already bought the deluxe edition of The Next Day the instant it was released. Too often, fans are forced to repurchase the same material twice due to re-releases with can't-miss bonus tracks. Granted, you'd still need to buy The Next Day's special edition if you want the DVD with music videos, but that's not something I feel I need. I just want the songs, and this EP has some great ones.

The songs are looser than the ones on the proper album. The opener, Atomica, has a great, energetic vibe. The Love is Lost remix is epic. God Bless the Girl could easily have been on the original main album. Every song here is strong. This is definitely a great addition to The Next Day, one well worth getting for fans of latterday Bowie.

Songs and more songs. With such a stretch of silence, those nine or ten lonely years, I'd welcome farts on snare drums if it meant there was more from The Next Day sessions that I could have in my home. As it turns out, most of the seven tracks featured on the Extra EP are beyond farts, and are in fact actual songs that are just as enjoyable as the stuff from the parent album. In one instance, God Bless The Girl, it surpasses the enjoyment - this may be my favourite Bowie song since I Would Be Your Slave. Atomica sure is fun and the remix of Love Is Lost just goes on forever in the best way. All the rock-isms are so care-free and buoyant, the vocals are better here than they've been on a Bowie release for quite some time, and I love the mix. I believe that I'd honestly forgotten how much I love the sound of a bass guitar until I've heard it on a Bowie record, who's not been afraid to let the low-end dominate his mix in 2013. Scattered as this review is, I really feel as strongly about this as I do The Next Day. It's perfect!

I thought I had the best version of this great Bowie release with the bonus tracks. Wow, was I ever wrong. This is a double cd with several nice bonus tracks.

The real gift here is the dvd with the 4 music videos that were taken from this release. This was such a great moment in music when Bowie returned after a decade of silence. Great vintage Bowie on display here. Some songs that just stuck in my head.

Little did we know he had one more masterpiece in him! Two years later he bid us farewell with Black Star. It is still hard to believe that David Bowie is no longer with us. There is no one around in the music world that could ever fill his shoes. I want to believe Black Star will get a deluxe treatment release, Give the fans the tracks that David was working on in his final days. Give us the videos from Black Star. I want fo see the 12 minute version of Black Star!!
