Editorial Reviews

Product Description

J¢hann J¢hannsson, known for the film scores of Sicario and The Theory of Everything, releases his DG debut album, his first studio album in 6 years. ORPHE is a melancholic, yet optimistic musical journey inspired by the Orpheus myth. J¢hannsson's score captures many facets of his previous works including intimate string quartet pieces, large string orchestra works, electronics, drones, organ, piano, choir, as well as enigmatic shortwave broadcasts to create an evocative & immersive sound.

I love this artist! I’ve used this album for putting my son to sleep for years and now I use it in my daycare classroom!

the work of Johannsson has always struck me as innovative, particularly where structure is concerned. and the structure of "Orphee" is another remarkable example of that highly discerning approach. the opening piece begins by segregating the instruments and phrases in a manner that is clearly not call / response but more akin to separation / juxtaposition. the effect is that of judicious use of the solo function on a mixing console, it encourages the listener to relate the passages, perhaps even layer them, in memory rather than in real time. Orphee goes on to explore orchestral variety in seemingly stand-alone segments that invite -- perhaps even compel -- the listener to a rather happy and rigorous exercise of, again, fitting these seemingly separate elements into a more complex and elusive whole. Orphee states that which cannot be stated: it delivers the experience of listening to a music that can be imagined but perhaps never completely realized.

I cannot stop listening to this album -- Absolutely superb! I was so sad to learn of the composer's premature death; Glad his music lives on. This album is just beautiful.

Beautiful disc full of small surprises that lead me along from beginning to end. I listen to this disc frequently and still am impressed with how fresh it sounds. The music of Hildur Guonadottir ( especially "Saman"), is also a favorite of mine and her participation in this recording led me to this disc.

Orphee is a great compilation. Listening to the record, one is taken on a journey by the artist, permitting one to get lost and sense what he feeling as he wrote and performed each song.

Marvelous Record! Such a haunting and well composed record front to end. Aside from the album itself the recording quality is just stunning. I strongly recommend getting the LP version as you will also get the 320bps digital download for a few bucks more.
If you like the work of Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds or Niels Frahm you'll love this album.

The opening piano piece is profoundly beautiful and a little sad/melancholy. The album is atmospheric with its use of shortwave number counts (look it up), but quite nice.
