Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The finest moments of one of the most individual live bands of our time, Mogwai, are perfectly captured in the grainy close-up film Burning with tracks such as "Like Herod's Wall of Noise," the dreamy "New Paths to Helicon pt 1," "Mogwai Fear Satan" (speaking of Bernard Hermann, there's s a shock worthy of Psycho in this song); the funereal "Scotland's Shame," and the strident finale "Batcat." Yet this is only half of the package. It also includes Special Moves, an eleven-track live album. For a band who come to such epic, monumental life in the live arena, it might be surprising to some that this is the first official live compilation they've ever released.
Review
It's stylistic black and white aesthetic, almost film noir-esque shots of New York emerge through the music, reflecting and augmenting the band's sound, visually matching the intensity the band creates onstage without overshadowing it. --Relix Magazine, August 2010
...the black-and-white footage does the talking without standard theatrics...there's atmospheric beauty in the close-ups of hands shredding at guitar strings onstage and applauding in the crowd. --Spin Magazine, August 2010

This is an achievement since they operate within a limited soundscape.
It's powerful quiet/loud dynamic, it's what critics call post-rock.
At their best (Rock Action, Young team) they're better than most alt bands around.
When it gets slightly repetitive (The Hawk is howling)I think they're over since it's been done better before.
Mogwai is a thing of beauty and they claim to have Loveless by my bloody valentine and punk rock as their biggest inspiration.
But they were original when they came on the scene and added power and passion to a jaded post-Nirvana music scene.
This brings me to this release, a live album and a DVD shot in black and white like a mini-film.
The CD is magnificent and catches the spirit of the band perfectly.
I was disappointed by the setlist (no my father, my king) but after a while it doesn't matter.
It's a reminder that Mogwai is an awesome live band and they have a strong connection with the audience.
The DVD is interesting, but more like a bonus.
It's live clips, city at night clips, it could have been better.
But whatever, this is great stuff and the more the better.
If you like Godspeed you black emperor you need this. If you like intense ,emotional music ,get this.
Highly recommended and a fine introduction to Mogwai.
Mogwai is best heard live in person. When that is not possible, the next best thing is a well-made audience recording. Fortunately the band is very permissive when it comes to taping and they have allowed a number of superb audience recordings to be made and posted on archive.org. This is where you should go to find something to listen to.
Support the artist by buying their music and going see them live but when you want to listen, pick the medium that shows them at their best. This release is not it.
They play damn well and you really capture the atmosphere even with live audio. I wish to hell they would have put more tracks up of course, but this is just fine. Why don't they ever play Ex-cowboy.
Anyhow, the drums on the DVD are mixed fairly low in the mix, which robs us a bit of Martin Bulloch's genius. Doesn't seem to be a problem on the CD tracks, luckily.
Can't say much more. Having seen them a few times in concert, I can report that the CD is a faithful testament to the power of Mogwai in concert (well, as long as you crank the volume to envelope you in waves of sound). Can't say they are in my top ten of all-time bands (not that far off though), BUT they are definitely in my top 3 of all-time live experiences. ATP 2008 was transcendent. The sound overwhelms, coats and devours your mind. It's a beautiful, almost zen experience.

So is this a big drawback? Not really because this is extremely well recorded, drawing out the intricacies and delicate melodies in Mogwai's music that lie beneath the wall of sound, something that you don't always pick up when you see them play live. What you get then on the CD, if less so on the DVD, is a very intimate recording of a very ferocious live band. So what you lose on one hand, you gain on the other in what is a very valuable and interesting album. The quality of the DVD recording is not as good as the CD but has a stronger tracklist.
Definitely an album to be highly recommnded.
