Not worth the price: sound is not clear and bluetooth connection drops

Not worth the price: sound is not clear and bluetooth connection drops
As a happy owner of the Bose Soundlink I got the Bose Soundtouch 30 for an even bigger sound. Also, I wanted to be able to play music from my computer or home network. It does sound good but it does not sound as clear as a full stereo speaker system. It does sound a bit muffled and the bass tends to be lacking of definition. I am by no means an audiophile as do not own a Bowers and Wilkins system or newer Definitive. My closest audiophile system would be my old Definitive speakers. This speaker system uses the Bose Waveguide technology which is antiquated by today's newer sound technology. It's basically utilizing the bass reflex technology that many speakers have today. It channels the sound through a channel much like a nautilus. Bass reflex technology maximizes the bass response at the cost of definition. An enclosed speaker system that does not have a bass reflex port will have a better sound. But then that will entail the use of woofers which many speakers do not have. Most speakers today have a mid-woofer or a cone that handles all of the sound such as the bass and highs. It is rare to find speakers that have all three, the woofer, the mid-range and tweeter. Usually you get two.Another problem with this system is that the bluetooth will often drop connection. And that can be irritating when you are listening to a complex classical piece. And that's even with the iPhone 6 sitting right next to it. That is just not acceptable by today's standards. My Soundlink does not have that problem. When compared side by side, the Soundtouch 30 does sound louder and fuller than the Soundlink. But the quality of sound for such a bigger and much more expensive component is not very good. In some sense the Soundlink bests its newer and larger brother as it has better sound definition. It just can't put out as much sound as it is smaller after all. Further, the Soundlink does not utilize the Waveguide technology so it does not have that boxy bass sound. All in all, if you are going to spend $500 for a sound system, look elsewhere. The Definitive portable system sounds way better but costs a little more. The Bowers and Wilkins unit sounds better, too, and costs about the same. Denon also offers a better option with a unit that sounds clearer and livelier without all that boomy sound. These other options do have apps to allow you to use your smartphone as a music source. If you are looking for portability and are not looking for a big sounding unit, the Soundlink will do.

I received this unit about a week ago and set it up immediately upon arrival. The primary reason I purchased this was to replace a Sirius XM tabletop radio that we had for several years. The radio still works but the display is no longer readable. I researched this purchase for a couple of weeks and considered other types of devices such as new Sirius radios, Internet radios that would receive stations other than Sirius XM, plain Bluetooth speakers and this Bose unit which does everything all the other devices do and more. It does cost more, but I like the sound and the functionality it provides.

The sound quality is terrific. I read many reviews and several said that the bass was too high and the reviewer had to turn it down in the app. I have not experienced this situation at all, in fact I was expecting a little more bass that I am getting (set to maximum in the app). I realize that the music content has a great deal to do with the bass delivery as does the position of the unit in the room. So I will give this speaker the benefit of the doubt until it is well broken in and I have tested it in other areas of the house.

I have a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive that I have a great deal of music on and the Bose Soundtouch can play all of the music easily. I really like this feature and I am working to add more music to the NAS.. Ultimately I will have my entire music library there. I can control the Bose from our iphones, ipads, and computers with ease, playing from Sirius XM, Amazon Music, iHeart radio, Pandora, my NAS, etc.

One issue I would point out to others is that my router (and many others) supports both 2.4G and 5G wifi network speeds. I have internal networks at both of these speeds and guest networks for both speeds as well. I used the 5G speed for the Bose (it does operate on both speeds which I appreciate) in an attempt to reduce buffering if that might be an issue. I have had no trouble with buffering or disconnects at all. The unit has run for several long days without a single issue. But we have had issues with our iphones not finding the speaker on occasion. After leaving home and returning, the iphone might select any of our internal networks for wifi connection. I learned that if I have trouble finding the speaker, I can make sure my iphone is using the same network as the speaker and it finds it immediately.

I have read many reviews complaining about the app, but I don't have any problem with it. It seems to do everything that I expected it to do. Also people have complained about having difficulty setting this speaker up. I had it connected to my network in less than 5 minutes after plugging it in. Then I had to establish an account and set up the preset buttons as I wanted them. Setup was really no problem at all.

I strongly recommend this speaker. The only complaint I have is that I would like to have more preset buttons, but that's a minor issue since the app allows me to make any changes necessary quite easily.

As the title says this is an initial review. The unit seems very solid, I hate plastic but I don't think Bose is going to start using hardwoods for my ascetic preference. There are a few reasons for my choosing the Bose SoundTouch 30:
1:The Bose sound system in my wife car is the cleanest, clearest, purest sound reproduction I have heard in an automotive stereo unit. Puts my 600 watt Harmon Kardon in my auto to shame.
2: I wanted to hear my music in HD quality from a wifi connection not bluetooth, although the Bose SoundTouch 30 is bluetooth capable.
3: I have always wanted to hear a Bose system with "wave guide" technology in my home where I listen to my music, not demo it in a store where there is more noise than a 3 ring circus. You have to hear the unit in a home setting, it makes all the difference in the world.

Sound Quality: It is beautiful! I'm not entirely sure how Bose gets this quality of sound from what I consider to be a small unit, but I now hear every instrument being played in the music as compared to my last 'bluetooth' speaker. My wife has even said there is a vast difference from our older unit. I don't believe in critizing the manufactuer of my other unit but suffice to say it was a $175.00 unit at time of purchase 5 years ago. It will be kept for basement or garage.

Hooking up the wifi did present some problems. Even though I followed the directions to a "T" and had watched 2 different Youtube videos before attempting, it still took 6 times before my SoundTouch would hook up through my wifi system. Once recognized by my router the system with downloaded Bose SoundTouch control app worked flawlessly. I even have one of the 6 preset buttons set up to toggle through all my Pandora stations thereby using only 1 of the buttons instead of using multiple buttons.

Now I guess the two cons that I consider. I have a Spotify account and in order to link the Spotify with the SoundTouch I must upgrade to the Spotify premium membership. I'll think about it for a few days. I find myself listening to internet radio more than I do the Spotify account so I'll decide later.
The second issue, is the Bose SoundTouch overpriced? Maybe. it depends on how much you listen to audio. I have to listen to audio more than I watch T.V. I wouldn't complain if the SoundTouch 30 was a hundred dollars less, but I still think the Bose SoundTouch 30 is a keeper and it will be enjoyed by me hopefully for years to come.

I have the 30 and 10 in an large open Kitchen / Family room. The combination is amazing. People have complained about the Bose app but it works perfectly for me. I'm streaming Pandora, music from my computer, online radio and Deezer. I tried Spotify but the integration isn't great. Deezer is fantastic and the Bose integration of Deezer in the app is awesome. It's also only $4.99 per month with your purchase of the Bose system.

I'm so glad I didn't listen to other negative reviews. Sound quality is amazing, app works great and plan to add a few more 10's to the mix soon.

I had tried Sonos about a year ago. I wanted it to work but the sound quality on Sonos just sounded poor. So glad I waited so that I can now build out the system I really wanted with Bose.

To be fair, I did have an issue when trying to connect the system to my Wi-Fi network initially. I'm running a Apple AirPort Extreme. The app couldn't connect to my network. I was reading online if my router has a 5 GHz option that I needed to give the 5 GHz option a different name from my main network.

I opened up the AirPort Utility, saw that there was an option to give the 5 GHz it's own unique name. I named the 5 GHz network, clicked on the checkbox and hit save. I tried to connect the app again to my network and it worked.

I don't know what the system was like before the III series but the III series works perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars La mejor bocina de la familia Soundtouch!
Reviewed in Mexico on November 25, 2017

No te vas a arrepentir!!!

Bought both Bose Soundtouch 30 & Sonos PLAY:5 together to do an A - B comparison of the sound. Both speakers sounded amazing. Went with the Bose because it had both Bluetooth & Wifi. Sonos only had Wifi. Loved the preset buttons on the Bose, so you didn't have to access music using your iPad or mobile device, simply push the button on Bose top & music plays right away. Similar to preset buttons in your car radio. Sonos did sound a "tad" better at higher volumes but the lack of Bluetooth, & lack of control buttons surface was the deciding factor for me. With the Sonos you would always have to use your Wifi APP to do everything.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recomendable

Suerte.
