Product Description
Widely considered to be one of the best albums of the '90s, 1992's Automatic for the People followed R.E.M.'s breakthrough album, Out of Time, and did not disappoint. Beloved by critics, the band's eighth studio album topped charts worldwide, and was certified 4x platinum in the US. Features iconic hit singles "Nightswimming," "Man on the Moon" and '90s anthem "Everybody Hurts."

Continuing to specialize in the art of curve-throwing, R.E.M. followed up its 1991 smash, Out of Time, with this fragile album of soft melodies and string arrangements. The sympathetic ballad "Everybody Hurts" must have prevented countless suicide attempts, while the Andy Kaufman tribute "Man on the Moon" (with Michael Stipe affecting an Elvis Presley imitation) and the rock-into-oblivion "Drive" are among the quartet's strongest hits. (The opening line, "Hey, kids, rock and roll," isn't so much a rallying cry as an expression of anxiety.) It takes a few listens for its charms to unfold, but Automatic is the gem between bigger hits Out of Time and Monster. --Steve Knopper

I own a couple of thousand of CDs and a stable of basses, amps, and accessories. I try to listen to all music that strikes me as unique and, thus, the collection. I became a professional musician because I saw what one can do with intelligent rock. I wanted a piece of that experience; without REM, I would have lacked the motivation to work so hard. Yes, y'all, REM is nothing short of inspiring.
The band indeed inspired a generation of young musicians, to which I belong(ed), to compose deceptively simple songs, with sincere-but-never cloying lyrics. My bands opened for countless major acts and it was all very nice: Opening for REM was the greatest experience I ever had as a musician. The band sparked a revolution: It made serious rock cool again; it was time for that and most of us are greatly, unabashedly indebted.
This album is a masterpiece. It presents REM at its tightest, most introspective (but not pompous--tough feat), and lyrically and melodically powerful. It impressed my fellow "college rockers" the most for the reasons mentioned above: We played it over and over in the tour-bus, until our normally patient driver yelled that he was either going to switch the CD or drop us off somewhere dark and scary. There is not a weak song on this album, not in any way. Stipe and crew take all who have ears and musical intelligence embedded betwixt them on a stark-yet-very-human tour of our universal yearnings, experiences, regrets and ride toward self-acceptance.
Very few bands manage to capture the tenets of high-brow positive existentialism (e.g., Alfred Adler, Irvin Yalom) without alienating their audiences with bloated pseudo-intellectualism. This one makes it to home-base with enough change to feed any meter. It's the most humbling album I've ever heard and I have been a touring and recording bassist for most of my adult life. There are no flashy pyrotechnics here, thank God: There is great beauty. Show me a rock album that surpasses this one and I will sell all my gear...cheap.
Elliot Scheiner has done it again. His surround mixes tend to be ambitious and creative. Rather than using them for mere reverb and ambience, he treats the rear channels as equals to the fronts, often placing some instruments and background vocals in the rear only. This results in a half "middle of the band" half "etherial, otherworldly" kind of sound. Many audio enthusiasts and members of the audio press like to diss this approach, and I used to until I heard it for myself for the first time on The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over DVD. The mix on Automatic for the People is a bit more understated than Hell Freezes over, and it's very artfully done. I see nothing sacred about the concert hall, especially for this type of music. Especially on track 4, "Everybody Hurts". I remembered this as being a depressing song, until I heard it again and listened to the words. As I am currently going through a divorce, I can relate to this song very well, and I felt as if Micheal Stipe and company had come to my house, set up their instruments and played this heartfelt balled just for me, beckoning me to carry on.
I don't currently have a DVD-audio player, but the DVD-video compatible Dolby and DTS 5.1 tracks sound first rate, particularly the DTS tracks which I recommend if your equipment can do it.
If you've ever had even a casual interest in R.E.M. or late 80's/early 90's alternative rock, this disc should be part of your collection.
I'm not to sure why DVD 5.1 Audio didn't take off as it is cheaper than the SACD format, it will work in most DVD players and most of all as most living rooms have Surround Sound systems, it just makes since to use this format. SACD requires a seperate player that is usually around $1,000.
Anyway, this is a really great sounding DVD-A that should be looked into if you are a fan of R.E.M. My partner had never heard any of their work, but he really liked this disc. That's saying a lot as he generally like country music. He was quite impressed with the way the sound literally bounced around the room.
