Editorial Reviews
2016 release, Explosions In The Sky's sixth album, and first non-soundtrack release since 2011's Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. True to its title, The Wilderness explores the infinite unknown, utilizing several of the band's own definitions of "space" (outer space, mental space, physical geography of space) as compositional tools. The band uses their gift for dynamics and texture in new and unique ways-rather than intuitively fill those empty spaces, they shine a light into them to illuminate all the colors of the dark. From the electronic textures of the opening track to the ambient dissolve of closer "Landing Cliffs," The Wilderness is an aggressively modern and forward-thinking work-one that wouldn't seem the slightest bit out of place on a shelf between original pressings of Meddle and Obscured By Clouds. It is an album where shoegaze, electronic experimentation, punk damaged dub, noise, and ambient folk somehow coexist without a hint of contrivance-and cohere into some of the most memorable and listenable moments of the band's expansive body of work-proper studio albums and major motion picture soundtracks alike. The progressive ambience of early Peter Gabriel, the triumphant romanticism of The Cure in their prime, and the more melancholy moments of Fleetwood Mac all inform the curious beauty of The Wilderness. The uncanny ability to reconcile the tension between discordant, nightmarish cacophony and laid-back, Laurel Canyon-inspired folk-rock is a cornerstone of this album, and the center of Explosions in the Sky's remarkable evolution. If The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place was the defining album of Explosions in the Sky's career, The Wilderness is their [re]defining album.

Many have pointed out that this album is best when listened to as a single experience from beginning to end, I concur. It moves along and almost feels like one of their epic (My Father My King) songs, but is evidently a number of tunes that fit so nicely together it is best experienced from beginning to end, as stated. Put it on rotate and it'll be good too. Best yet put this with a few other albums on rotate and it will fit in nicely.
This is one of those bands that have a solid, rabid base of fans. They sold out 6,000 seat at Radio City Music Hall a few years ago, however there is no air play on mainstream radio and almost no one I know has heard of them, and I know a number of people who are fairly diverse and familiar with the music underground. Having said that it is hard to say to a friend, "Hey I have this cool song check it out" bc I find Explosions music is an acquired taste that only gets better and better. This disc is no different, it only get better and better.
I was excited to hear that there is a difference to this new sound than previous records as many explained that some of the material was darker than their earlier catalogue. After hearing it, I'm not so sure that's the best descriptor. There's nothing really dark about the music . There are more of the same upbeat tendencies that uave come with Explosions' work. In fact, I would say that 'Greet Death' is more dark (and, perhaps, delightful) than anything here on 'The Wilderness.'
There are definite high points in this record. 'Disintigration Anxiety' is and obvious stand out along with 'Colors in Space' and 'Landing Cliffs.' Those tracks pull together everything new about this record and really flesh it out to something appearing like an end point. As for the rest, though, the sounds are pleasant enough, but the adventure ends there.
I've no doubt that this record will please fans of the band as it's nothing out of nowhere. The album is what it wants to be. Be prepared for the electronic and fans should be just fine. I hope the future holds more detailed ventures into this sound. As of right now, this is a good record; the future may hold another great one.
