    The best sounding NC headphones

    The best sounding NC headphones
I’ve tried them all (Bose, Sony, Sennheiser, Beats, Marshall), and these are the only ones I can listen to after getting used to my DT 1770. Yes, they are not even in the same class fidelity-wise, but the sound is even and detailed enough. And use the hearing loss compensation since they are a bit lacking on the high frequencies out of the box (in comparison to 1770).My only concern is that they talk too much. But you can (and should) turn this off in the settings.UPDATEThe build quality is bad. There were tiny cracks on the headband plastic, and they just replaced them with a new pair (after about 1.5 years). But even that new pair didn’t last very long. After about the same period, it started to crack in the same way. And also, the headband cushion fake leather started to glue off. (See the picture.)But the sound quality didn’t change. It is still better than all other ANC headphones. Including Apple AirPods Max.Thus minus one star: 5→4

These are a rather amazing pair of headphones overall, I was fortunate enough to get them for $300 rather than $400. I’m really not fond of touch controls in general, to many opportunities for error, but these have an amended approach in the ability to modify the touch pads sensitivity in Beyerdynamic’s MIY app. I haven’t updated the firmware on these simply because I haven’t wanted to connect them to my PC and go through the update that way as they work well enough now. It seems truly bothersome that they wouldn’t have the app flushed out enough to update the firmware from your phone, but that’s just me nitpicking. The ANC on these is fine, it’s not Sony or Bose but it’s certainly good enough, especially with media playing. Outside of that their passive noise isolation is also quite impressive. From my experience with these tuning them to your own profile is an extremely good idea, these are currently my favorite pair of wireless headphones. They also seem to sound better with ANC on (level I or II). My biggest problem with these is their build quality, as they certainly don’t feel like a premium set of headphones. I feel like using more premium materials would have been a good idea, at the cost of weight. The weight of headphones is often dramatized making me wounder just how weak most people’s necks must be.

The most important qualities in headphones to me remain the same wired or wireless:
    1) Sound Quality 2) Comfort 3) Build Quality. I put no stock in ANC or other gimmicks, and I suppose not being a follower in this regard is a detriment to myself as the market changes to the whims of trends with little, if any, long-term thought. These are great headphones that checked 2/3 of what I look for. They’re certainly not perfect but they're certainly worthy of appreciation.

Aside from having ANC and BT, There is 1 other thing that seems worthy of mentioning up front, especially with mor and mor phones not including a headphone jack.
These can be used in wired mode via a USB-C cable. No silly dongle, just a wired USB-C cable. YMMV of course, based on your source, file types etc, but this makes the lagoon's a bit mor versitile than many other flagship BT headphones that do come with an audio cable, but can't be used in wired mode unless the headphones are turned on.
A true misstep by Bowers & Wilkins and others.
So these lagoon headphones can be used either via USB-C cable, 3.5 audio cable, or via Bluetooth.
Comfort, i can wear them for long periods of time, longest has been 3 hours or so, but i do wish they were a little less rounded and mor oval shaped. The comfort gives them an on-ear esque feel IMO, and i just feel like the cups start to dig at me after a while. That said, they certainly aren't uncomfortable, and isolate pretty well.
There are 2 modes of ANC, and both are not to bad, especially the 2nd level. it doesn't cut out mid-higher frequency sounds as well, but will completely illiminate the rumble of a noisy furnace, train engine, and most of what you'd hear on a plane. I haven't flown for a couple months, so unfortunately haven't had the chance to test them on a flight.
when the headphones power up, they'll announce what battery percentage is remaining, and when you press play will announce which codec is being used. e.G. AAC or APTX.
Speaking of which, these headphones are compatible with both previously mentioned codecs, as well as SBC.
all controls are on the right earcup.
on the bottom you have your ANC switch as well as the power switch, on the earcup you swipe up and down to raise and lower volume, swipe left to rewind and right to fast forward, tap the center to pause and play as well as anser and end calls, touch and hold center till you hear the audio prompt for your chosen assistent, and my favorite feature with these headphones, swipe and hold left or right to scrub through sections of a track. need to hear that guitar solo again? just swipe and hold to rewind back to it. Need to skip past an aweful verse on an otherwise great hipHop track? Scroll past, and give it the lack of attention it deserves.
    The sound quality.
that's really hard for me to describe. it's good, but it's trapped in itself. I'll try to explain.
With a lot of headphones, Earphones, earbuds etc; things are usually pretty straight forward and easy to form an opinion around. E.g. this pair sounds to forward in the mids or; this other pair has to much bass.
    The best way i can think of to describe the Beyerdynamic lagoon would be that;
refreshingly, they don't have so much bass that the rest of the mix is drowned out. But they also don't have quite enough full bass either. It's not thin, it's just cut off. Incomplete. Specificly speaking about bass, i was able to get mor via the Mosayc app, developped by a company Beyerdynamic purchased called Mimi Hearing Technologies. mor on the app and how it works below.
Back to sound quality, same thing with the mids, though to a far lesser extent. The mids were my favorite part of the sound with these headphones. The one thing that bothered me most with these headphones was that i just wanted mor treble than anything. These aren't muddy, just really veiled. When i plugged them in to my Wired setup, which is a Schiit Gungnir multibit DAC plus a jotunheim amp. When the headphones were plugged into this setup, with no eq; i got that treble i wanted and the rest of the mix was honestly exactly what i'd want out of a bluetooth headphone. But this is like comparing a BMW X7 vs a Geo Metro and expecting the same level of refinement and detail. But at minimum, via the mosayc app, i should have been able to get some of this sound i wanted, but to cut the rambling short, all the frequencies, especially those in the bass and treble regions, seem to have these really aggressive limiters if you will, placed on them. They're capable of much mor than what you hear in default mode, or any setting i stumbled on via the app. They always had this veiled/slight clipping sound at times. Not a crackle, and not like typical audible distortion either.
The app, has you take a hearing test, and is a bit backwards in its implementation imo. you touch the screen when prompted, then a tone plays. when you no longer hear that tone, you let up on the screen. Seems it should be that you tap the screen once you don't hear the tone anymore. even doing this and trying all different things, i still had the same problem on principal that i described above. I think this could be solved mostly anyway, by having a manual eq in the app so that people can really make the headphones theres.
i am returning these headphones. not because they are bad, but because i can't get a sound i like out of them.
but they're honestly not to bad, and i think a lot of people will like them. i do in a lot of ways, and if there were a manual eq, i probably would keep them.

Update 2023: these headphones downright fell apart. Creak with every movement, the “leather” is pealing, pairing is a huge mess, and so many functions just spaz out and I am constantly fighting the annoying voice. I regret this purchase. They sound good, not beyerdynamic great though. I am much happier with my Beats Studio Pros for ANC/fun, and sticking with my 770s for “real” headphones.

    Original review:
My favorite pair of headphones are my dt770 pros. So when I started looking for a a pair of ANC headphones, I was ecstatic to see beyerdyamic have an offering, at an extremely competitive price after a couple years on the market.

It was between these, and the Sony M4s ($399). I did not like the way the bose sounded at all (despite best ANC in class), and the AirPods max were too expensive and did not offer a lossless wired option, so they were off the table as well.

Sound quality is absolutely incredible. I listen to mostly electronic (bass and house), dance, hip hop, and pop. The Sony’s are close, but beyerdynamic is in it for audio quality first and foremost and it shows. They are a bit brighter and more detailed in the treble than the 770s, with a tighter soundstage, but otherwise share many of the same characteristics with great, natural, prominent mids, great instrument separation, and deep, prominent bass.

The ANC may be the worst of the four I tried, but still very very good and more than does the job for me. On my loud, city street-facing apartment deck the trucks rolling by and hum of the city fade away into nothing, even at level 1, which is the main reason for me buying these. Level 2 is great for when I’m sitting right next to my AC in the office, or airplanes etc, but does degrade sound quality quite a bit.

These headphones offer a very unique feature the other three do not - USB DAC mode. Using a usb C-C cable I plugged into my MacBook and got 24bit, 48khz uncompressed audio, and it sounded absolutely amazing. A big step up from the 3.5mm Jack on my computer, which isn’t bad, and comparable to my external DAC.

Build quality is OK, great for the price but the Sony and apple win out here, but you pay for it. Very comfortable and light, the material of the cups and headband is very comfortable and I can wear them all day. The plastic feels a little cheap and can creak if you aren’t wearing them perfectly, but nothing that will distract you.

The swipe gestures on the earcup are downright awful. I set the sensitivity to minimum to avoid accidental presses and control from my phone. I disabled the accelerometer for head position as well as it constantly misfired.

For the low price you loose some features the others have. No proximity sensor - which would be a much better auto-pause solution. Bluetooth 4.2 vs 5.0 means worse range (still able to go into the other room, but not out back to the yard like I could with AirPods). They still support 2 device connected at the same time despite being older Bluetooth tech. No LDAC support, but I use apple anyway and am happy with AAC, and wired for lossless.

    Battery life is outstanding.

Middle of the line ANC headphones, with top-of-the-pack sound quality. If sound quality is the #1 priority, and you don’t mind loosing some features and build quality to save nearly two hundred dollars these are the headphones for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular sound quality and amazing overall
Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2020
These headphones are absolutely spectacular for their sound quality and their many other features. The headphones have a plastic exterior, but it feels quite nice in the hands and feels very sturdy and solid. No creaking. It's hard to describe, but it feels like an excellent plastic. It also has a nice cool feel to it and putting the pads around my ears is enjoyable. The padding is extremely soft foam and cool to the touch so I'm not overheating. For my daily usage, I don't even use the Active Noise Cancellation, the regular noise isolation afforded by the high quality ear pads surrounding my ears is more than good enough to cut pretty much all noise around me -- and when I play music I can't hear anything at all. I did rate the active noise cancellation a 4 instead of a 5 because I know Sony and Bose have better ANC abilities. However, I didn't really purchase these wireless headphones for their ANC properties (which are amazing, just not the best on the market).

They were purchased for their sound. And the sound quality is amazing, that's all there is to say. It's not bass heavy, or overly cheery. It feels neutral and "studio-like". Bass is warm and deep, yet it doesn't overpower any songs and can be enjoyed for hours. Same with the highs, very noticeable and crisp, but not piercing. The mids have a nice "open" sound to them that creates pleasant sound imaging and space.

One thing that I noticed was the speed at which the headphones are able to resolve. What I mean is, I played songs and began hearing individual note strikes on high hat/cymbals where I thought it was just one continuous sound when listening on lower quality devices. These headphones actually made the individual strikes audible instead of just a wall of noise.

A great feature that I enjoy is the ability to listen while plugged in. I do video editing work and appreciate the lower latency and (even) better quality afforded by a cable hookup. I can connect with either AUX or USB-C to listen with a wired connection for even higher quality.

I have not yet used the APP to personalize my sound as I want to fully appreciate the out-of-the-box sound before I change anything.

The touch features on the side are very easy to memorize and use. It's honestly amazing to use the touch features while walking around the city and does not feel gimmicky at all. I may have preferred analogue buttons for at-home use, but when walking around the city I much prefer the touch swipes instead of analogue.

And while the light ring system is pretty and interesting, I don't get too much use out of it. Though it is a nice little quality of life improvement, so it doesn't detract from my experience at all. I do like how it signifies the left and right headphone when picking them up. However, mostly, the lights are just pretty.

Overall, the headphones are excellent and I would 100% recommend them to someone who wants a wireless headphone that does not compromise on audio quality (and in fact delivers audio quality significantly better than its rivals), while also featuring great active noise cancellation. You are not making any compromises with these and owning them is just a good decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent travelling headphones. No regrets buying, not much *new* competition at the price point.

This was my first set of cans with ANC. At first I was fairly underwhelmed, as some frequencies, especially in the higher registers aren't as affected, but now it's an absolute godsend, especially on public transport. I take buses regularly, and it does a great job at eliminating the majority of the engine / road noise. If ANC is a major requirement, general concensus is that the Sony WH1000XM3 / XM4 headphones are class leaders at their respective price points. XM3's can be found used round about the same price as the Lagoons, with new earpads will be good as new. I don't own them, but that is what I have surmised.

Earcups are 1.5cm thick at the top and 2cm at the bottom. Despite being thin compared to indoor headphones, they are still very comfortable. Headband is also comfortable, but I have plenty of hair, so bald fellas, your mileage may vary. Clamping force is fairly low, but good enough for me to go running and have zero worry about them coming off / shifting around.

One concern for both the Earcups and the ANC is if you wear glasses, and how far the arms deviate from the sides of your head. My standard glasses make minimal difference to the seal of the earcups, but my sunglasses create a large enough gap between the cup and my head to allow external noise in and out, which also reduces the effectiveness of the ANC.

The highest quality codec available is aptX, which can transmit 352kbps. While this will *technically* be a bottleneck for FLAC users, be honest, do you really notice and care about that difference? If it's a major concern, you should look for headphones that use the LDAC or aptX-HD codec.

One small issue I had: Playback occasionally stopped when I looked downwards, which was an issue with the option that automatically stops playback when you take off the headphones. Can be disabled in the MIY app, and I see no benefit in the feature anyway. I won't take off points for having the option to disable it though.

5.0 out of 5 stars De lo mejor en sonido Bluetooth!!
Reviewed in Spain on September 27, 2020
