Sound:
These Sennheisers have amazing sound quality. I can hear all of the tiny details, clearly, in just the right proportions. The bass might be a little lacking, for those that want very "punchy" bass. For those that listen to music all day, the bass is just about perfect (I wouldn't mind a 5% increase in bass); Any more would result in listening fatigue and/or a headache. I feel like the previous model (Sennheiser PXC 550) has slightly more bass than the new PXC 550-II (by about that 5%).
Comparing the PXC 550-II to the Bose QC35 Series II: I noticed during the only song I directly compared them with, that the Bose was playing almost none of the background instrumentals, and the ones it did play were muddled. Switching to the Sennheiser, all of that detail was captured, while still remaining in the "background" - how the music was intended to sound.
Battery:
I haven't tested the batteries on the new models, but based on the previous models: The Bose seemed to be needing a recharge every day or two of use, while the Sennheisers easily last twice as long. I recently moved, and had my headphones packed away for about 7 months, and upon pulling my headphones out, the Bose battery was completely drained, and the Sennheiser was at 90-100% still. It's possible that the Bose had a day of use on them without a recharge, but still. Also note both pairs were bought at the same time (Batteries are the same age).
Life Expectancy:
Based on the previous model: I've owned these Sennheisers for 3 years now, and they are still going strong. I've noticed no issues, no shortened battery life, no cracks or tears, no replacement parts needed. I can say the same for the Bose, but I will say that my previous pair of Bose (AE2) died on me right after the 1 year warrantee period, and when I went to buy a new pair from Best Buy, every pair of Bose headphones on display was also dead.
Comfort:
These headphones are super comfortable. Unfortunately the ear cups are narrower than the Bose, requiring me to move them around a bit to "seat" my ears properly each time I put them on. That said, once on, this does not cause any discomfort to my ears, even after a full day of use. My main (only, really) complaint with these is that these do put more pressure on the sides of your head than the Bose; Though, this is also a good thing. As the Bose headphones slide right off my head any time I jerk my head, or bend over, while these Sennheisers stay put. So if you're doing anything other than sitting down, the mild discomfort is a small price to pay. The Bose ear pads seem softer, but I don't notice an increase in comfort from this.
I kind of wish they used a cloth for the ear cup padding, because leather gets hot after a while, but obviously the noise cancellation would then be non-existent. I just wish they offered this as an option, without noise cancellation.
Noise Cancellation:
The noise cancellation is awesome on the Sennheisers (And the Bose, for that matter). Bose does a better job (by about 15%) at cancelling white noise, like in an airplane, or a busy area with lots of talking. It seems like the Sennheisers do a better job (by about 5%) at cancelling "sharper" noises, like a single person talking. I'd consider the noise cancellation to be amazing, but Bose definitely puts them to shame overall (though, I reckon Bose has the best noise cancellation available).
Both headphones have less "pressure" than other and older noise cancelling headphones. If you're unsure what I am talking about, it feels like your ears need to be popped, caused by the sound the headphones are making to cancel outside noises. I feel like the Sennheisers have less pressure than the Bose, but they also aren't quite as effective, as stated above.
The Sennheisers have adjustable noise cancellation (off, low, high) which is really nice because it extends your battery life if, like me, you very rarely actually need (or want) the noise cancellation.
Controls:
I love the Sennheiser controls. The touch controls and motions are intuitive, it's precisely as responsive/sensitive as I'd like. Another nice feature is the setting that plays outside noises ("anti-noise cancelling"), which is useful if you need to be aware of your surroundings, or someone is talking to you, etc.
I noticed many reviews mentioned an issue with accidentally hanging up calls when adjusting the headphones, but I haven''t had this issue, and don't understand how other people do, unless they have something in their hand, or they are grabbing the outside of the ear cups for some reason - I grab mine by the sides of the ear cups. Granted, I don't talk often on the phone, so I'm less likely to experience this, anyway, but I'd imagine the same exact issue would cause accidental pausing of music, etc., which I haven't had an issue with.
Cons:
The only cons I can think of are:
1) As mentioned in Comfort: The headphones press slightly too firmly on the sides of my head. This could also potentially be a Pro, so I'm reluctant to call it a con.
2) I wish they would have made it possible to both continue your music and play outside sounds when using the "anti noise cancellation" feature. I'd like to be able to listen to music, while still being aware of your surroundings when driving, walking, biking, etc. Perhaps you need to be able to hear your baby crying, but want your tunes.
Apparently I can't leave a review for both the PXC 550 and the PXC 550-II, so a note regarding ONLY the PXC 550 (this has been fixed in the new model): The "surroundings-aware" functionality frequently has issues when playing music. About half the time, double tapping just pauses my music. It might take 3 attempts to get it to turn on.
I purchased these on deployment in 2016. I have slept with them almost every single night since then (I watch movies or TV shows or listen to music to fall asleep). They have a nice smooth low-profile shape that isn't annoying when sleeping, even on my side with them wedged between my head and the pillow. And the ear pads are exquisitely comfortable.
I think I like the feel of wearing them more than not! The handband is as comfy as the ear pads. I can wear these for days.
I like the looks. Modern and minimalist. Black and silver. As I've worn them every day for 4 years at the time of this writing, I'd say they are well made! They look new! I did replace the ear pads with genuine Sennheiser replacements a year ago. They were starting to crack and flake. I'm not faulting them for this as they had A LOT of use.
The auto on/off feature is handy and better than (forgetting to) turn them off with a button. Rotating the ear pieces to turn them off just becomes second nature when I take them off.
They pair perfectly every time I turn them on with either my phone or computer.
They really do sound great! I also own Sennheiser HD600 open-back and HD-1 (Momentum 2.0) wireless headphones. Better/worse? I'd say just different. The 600's obviously have a more open sound with a bigger soundstage, but that is the nature of open-back vs. closed back. The 550's have more bass than the Momentums, but I'd say the Momentums are more revealing. The PXC-550's have a very mellow, relaxing sound that I can listen to for eternity.
The noise cancelling doesn't fully cancel out all noise, but it is effective. I work and am deployed half the time on an aircraft carrier and this helps a lot. It is loud here sometimes!
Some quirks:
-I wish Apple had better (aptX) support for 3rd party headphones. I can tell a difference wired vs. wireless during critical listening.
-The touch controls do sometimes get pushed by accident. It isn't usually a big deal and I just tap them to unpause.
-Wind upsets the ambient sound sensors and causes a fluttery distortion sound like someone blowing in your ear. I have to make sure I'm not in the direct path of my rack fan.
-I wish they were USB C or Lightning. I hate having to figure out if the USB plug is right side up or not.
-The Captune app is nice but doesn’t play Apple Music. You don't have to use Captune tho.
-Probably 6 times over 4 years (but 2 of those times have been recently) I will roll over in my sleep and somehow it registers on the touch sensor to "redial", and it will redial the last called person on my phone. Pretty silly in the middle of the night when I am sleeping. There is no way I can tell to turn the touch features off on the headphones or in the app.
-If I'm using the headphones to listen to music on my computer, and my phone rings or I get a text message and it beeps, it signals the headphones to pair with the phone. A couple seconds later or hitting play again on my computer causes it to play what is on the computer again. Smart, I guess.
Cool things:
-Unlike many other reviews, I've never had Bluetooth connection issues with these headphones, ever!
-If you plug the USB charge cable into your computer, it can play wired through the USB. It sounds much better than wireless. They also come with a standard mini-headphone cable.
-There are many features in the Captune app you can adjust. Equalizer, Director, noise-canceling level, etc.
-I've used them seldomly for phone calls, mostly because I was already wearing them and someone called. They said it sounded fine.
-The British woman's voice is pleasant. "Power on."
-They are quite lightweight.
My Sennheiser Momentums headphones cannot play through USB, and several features in Captune do not work with them (like adjusting the noise cancelling, call features, and "Director" EQ mode). Odd, since they are both wireless headphones that can otherwise utilize the app. The Momentum earpads, while they feel great (almost gooey) are slightly too small and it does become a bit bothersome after a while. I never have this issue with the 550's. The ergonomic shape helps I'm sure.
Anyways, I just love these headphones and recommend them most highly! Here's hoping for at least 4 more years of "sound" sleep with them!
Update Nov 2020: I decided I'm buying the PXC-550's for everyone in my family for Christmas this year. They have served me well, and I hope they get just as much enjoyment out of them as I do.

Okay so there are a few things about these headphones that I don't like, I will list those first: No power button frustrates me more than I assumed it would, the build quality is good (and I bang my electronics around) but there are a few things like, the pivot of the cups, which you use to turn them off is plastic on plastic, that feel a little subpar.(Like injection mold lines) These cup pivots will smooth over time but I feel like some sort of washer would have come in handy there. But my MAIN complaint is a software one, the mic doesn't work in stereo mode, I will explain as this is important. I wanted a pair of headphones first, with good sound quality with a close second being a half-decent microphone for all the zoom calls I have been doing. While it does have a fantastic mic compared to most over-ear headphones, they have two sound profiles: Stereo and Hands-Free Audio. ANY time you are using the mic the headphones go into 'Hands-free audio' mode, which has noticeably worse sound quality. This is explained by the fact that you shouldn't need the mic and the stereo quality sound at the same time, for me this was just an annoying inconvenience. <- this is the reason the sound quality got 4/5 and not 5/5. Stereo sound quality 5/5 I bought these on sale for $279CAN, if I'd paid full price $449CAN these negative would bug me A LOT more.
The negative aside, these headphones are great!. They sound amazing, with very good clarity, and separation. ANC works well, not super good with higher pitches but from what I understand all ANC headphones fall a bit short in that department. They are also incredibly comfortable and light. I've heard people complain about ambient mode not working WHILE playing music, but as a regular commuter, I can honestly say I don't understand why you would want that feature. If you need ambient on you should be listening actively, so you don't need music..and if it's a safety risk, take your damn headphones off. No USB C is an odd choice but the fast-charging works fine, a full charge from 0% in 3 hours. I've always been a headphone person, and I would buy decent headphones but this is my first high-quality headphones and I'm quite impressed.
Having had the original version for years and loved them, I am gutted these are soo bad. I'm returning the item, but now have to pay for the return postage myself.
Do no buy unless they sort out the firmware issue, you have been warned.
Edit - Sennheiser have apparently fixed the bug in the app preventing the firmware update.
