There nothing like a pair of Kanto's/Audioengine's/Logitechs and are much better than running a pair of Klipsch, PSB, or etc. in a 4" size. These are on the compact side for a speaker with a woofer of this size and the soft dome tweeter won't "face tweeter" you to death after 10 minutes like my Martin Logans did. I strongly recommend these.
Good clean sound. Especially for the price.
The remote is really chintzy. And should I lose or break it I’m sol since there aren’t buttons on the speakers themselves to replicate essential functions.
Better remote and/or controls on the speaker themselves and this would be five star.
I've had and still have Kantos, Swans, & did a brief stint with some Audioengines. They are all good at what they are good at. However, these are my favorite speakers of the bunch. They just plain sound fantastic! There is something about them that sounds...high end (no pun intended). A sound you would expect from a brand whose normal 2ch speakers are upper tier anyway. They are also built well. Fit and finishes are top notch, and no corners appear to have been cut just for the sake of saving 40 cents here or there. The best thing is they don't give your space a mixing studio vibe, feel commercial, or try so hard to look expensive that they kind of look cheap. They look like high end bookshelves (which is what the non-powered versions are).
SOUND:
My Elara's (which are in Chestnut btw) are setup in my 12x14ft office on Fluid stands and behind a Fosi Q6 DAC connected to my computer (I don't care about vinyl or turntables yet, sorry). Everything is chained with quality interconnects. I majorly listen to Jazz, Acoustic, Classical, and sometimes EDM (opposite end of the spectrum) which all are represented a treat. The thing that blows me away every time is the effortless detail resolved from tracks. Instrument separation, soundstage depth and height are all rendered so good when the tracks are mastered well. There is real punch in the midrange, and the highs are oh so soft yet detailed. I'm hearing small distant things clearly with no overlap or overpowering by anything else. These are the first set of monitors I've had that are not fatiguing after hours of listening, no matter how high I turn them up. My Swans came the closest.
Some early reviews mentioned a lack of bass, and due to that, I had a subwoofer lined up to pair with these. To my surprise there was more low end that I expected, and on some days I feel like maybe I don't really need one (outside of certain EDM stuff).
To use audiophile terminology (ugh), these sound "sweet" and have a "buttery" rendering to sound. One reviewer described listening to them to be like drinking cappuccino foam. I laughed at that sentiment initially, but I agree wholeheartedly now.
SUMMARY:
The Elara's, especially at current prices, are a hidden gem and are well worth a look or listen for the discerning audio enthusiast. Don't get hung up on the measurements or the graphs...just listen. Sometimes not following the crowd is the best decision.
I have a Rega RP1 w/ortofon 2m red and tried listening to records directly plugged in to the phono input (phono switch turned on) using the MM phono pre-amp built into the speakers. Records sound muddled without much separation of instruments.
My main reason for purchase was to bring the turntable from the basement to our mid-level where we do most of our entertaining, cooking, and hanging out. I was looking to eliminate clutter and the need to use an external pre-amp, which is why I didn't rate these speakers higher.
After plugging in my Project Tube Box phono pre-amp, changing the dip switch in the back to "line-in" from "phono", the speakers sound much much much better when listening to vinyl. If I were to bring my powered sub from the basement and add it to the subwoofer out, these speakers would really shine.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase. After some break in time the low end will get better.
