A 5.1.4 setup using mostly Klipsch speakers was built, along with an existing center channel and front pair of speakers. If I watch an Atmos track, it truly feels like I am in it. That helicopter? It is right above me. Compliments of the gold speaker posts and low THD, I utilized gold plated banana plugs and have absolutely zero speaker hiss. None. Never had that in my home theater career.
The multi-zone works great, my primary rational for getting it was for the HEOS and SiriusXM that I can use outside by the firepit. This requires the HEOS app which works fine. I found the Zone 2 HDMI out only works for HDMI sources, while everything else (including HEOS) needs the Zone 2 RCA outputs. After checking with support, the process is cumbersome to enable, including enabling Zone 2, setting to All Channel audio, changing it back, then ensuring Zone 2 input is HEOS. After that it works great but was an annoyance considering the price paid. On the plus side, full Atmos is available on Zone 1.
The HDMI audio sync works perfectly (compared to other receivers I have owned), and the onscreen display for adjusting individual speakers is great. Use the automatic setup it is a great help. I also suggest high quality speaker wire, I'm using 12 gauge OFC, and gold plated banana plugs.
It was between this and the 3700X, opted for the 4500X since it had a 2 line display which alone was worth it. How long will you have a home theater receiver? Hopefully awhile so go bigger than you think you'll need. Haven't used Zone 3 yet, but perhaps I'll run some wires towards the pool.
To note: It does run hot. I placed twin fans on the top that connect via USB, which power on with the unit and shut off after. Make sure there's plenty of ventilation.
After being lazy I discovered I only had two days before I could return it, so I did a lot of work to get it installed and tested. Happily the only problem was the network, which was fixed after a little troubleshooting. (The antenna was not screwed on correctly and was shorting it out.)
I got this to get my 9.1 speakers going. My old amp could only do 7.1, and heos, which I was using with headphone system using a heos link.
After getting it all set up it was time to listen.
It is a big step up from my other system sound wise. I was pleased with my old system but this is clearly better. It has a number of different sound profiles and they are all useful. I have not tested the heos profiles because the defaults are all I need.
My old system played great music. This sounds superb with a much better movie profiles. This is the first time I have been pleased with a some of the common setups for movies. A truck drives but and it is like I'm on the street.
My old system was 4k but this has a much more clear and a sharper image. Even the non-4k looks better. I think the old setup was using the wrong input. Someday i will have to swap and see if it the same or not.
I've read where it has an over heating problem so I'm scared to put it in the cabinet. However it is a wide space and should work find there. Im out of shape since a bicycle crash so it might stay on top until I can get some help.
I'm not sure if it is the adding in the two speakers or a really great amp but I could not be more pleased with the results. It was a steal for 900 dollars and well worth the $1699 it normally sells for.
Highly recommended for music and movies.
So I start by contact Denon tech support, mind you I contact them immediately after finding this issue. I will say though, to be fair, I did purchase this thing about 60 days prior to opening it, as I was remodeling my basement to include a new home theater. In order to keep dust off of the unit, I kept it completely boxed and safely stored.
Once contacting Denon, they literally said I would have to send this brand new item to them for 4-6 weeks to get repaired. Are you kidding me? The center of an entertainment system, that's brand new, just opened, send it in for over a month for a repair. That's terrible, I event tried to escalate and their customer service declined to do anything about it. I hate companies that don't give a darn about customer service, if there were any real competition out there, I wouldn't buy another Denon. Its sad, I really do love these products. And I have tried Yamaha products and others, and I still really like the Denon features and Denon sound. But their service is terrible, this even after I told the escalation manager that I put nearly $5K worth of Polk speakers in my home theater (which they own). Doesn't matter.
So then comes a company that actually understands customer service, I then reached out to Amazon, and luckily, they were great. They agreed to allow me to return this out of a normal window, get a refund, as I was going to buy a replacement. That's service, they didn't put me through the ringer only to deny me service. Thank you Amazon!
Finally, the product, so far I love it. I do a have a few small software gripes, including their Denon remote app, and the HEOS apps. Why the Denon software still (I say still because my other Denon receivers had this same problem years ago) won't work between IP networks is mind numbing. For example, my wifi network uses three different subnets, and my wired network is another 3 networks. I don't even care if the apps can't automatically locate the receiver, I can manually enter the IP address (or I should be able to) in the apps and have them work. So in order for me to get these apps to work, I have to force the two devices on to the same network, dumb, routed networks are nothing new.
I'm also still surprised to see this doesn't have chromecast built in. But I knew that when I bought it. And finally, I wish I could change the sources assigned to the quick access buttons. I will continue to update this review over time.
