Amazon Sidewalk
A shared network that helps compatible devices work better at home and beyond the front door. If wifi is lost, Sidewalk enables certain devices to stay connected. Also, Sidewalk helps devices like water sprinklers and pet locators work over longer distances. Sidewalk uses a small portion of your internet bandwidth to provide these benefits to you and your neighbors via Sidewalk Bridges (participating Echo and Ring devices), and is turned on for your device unless you have previously turned off the setting. You can turn off Sidewalk at any time. Learn more about Sidewalk.

I own an Echo (1st generation), an Echo Dot (2d generation), and 3 of these Echo Dot (3rd generation). Comparing to generation 2, these sound so much better. Most of my use is listening to music, to use generation 2 I would have to pair it with a bluetooth speaker. My 1st generation has the best sound, but it is also a lot bulkier and more expensive. I love that Generation 3 did away with the big Amazon logo on the front, for a more conspicuous look. Generation 3 is the perfect combination of sound, looks, and size. I wouldnt listen to music on generation 2 without pairing it with a bluetooth speaker (for some reason the bluetooth was not stable either), but gen 3 sounds music sounds decent . Definitely an upgrade from gen2. The onw advantage of gen2 is the use of a standard micro-USB power cord for power. Generation 1 and 3 come with non standard power cords. I am still debating replacing the gen 2 with a gen 3, and about adding one to the garage. I keep wanting to buy more of these.Top 10 cool things I commonly do with Alexa: * I use these as a house intercom system.* I can ask alexa to call my phone when I can't find it. Amazing how often that one gets used.* We get groceries through Amazon Fresh, so now we all ask alexa to buy whatever groceries we need, and they will get added to the cart for the next grocery delivery. No more grocery list. * I can ask alexa to "drop in" to my sons bedroom, which lets me listen in to what is happening when it gets crazy (it makes a beep sound, so he knows when I am listening). This also lets me talk to my husband while he is in his office and I am in the kitchen without yelling.* I have always listened to music while in the kitchen, but its nice to be able to control what you play through these.* I ask alexa to announce "food is ready", the announcement is then relayed to all fire tablets, fire tv, and echo devices throughout the house. No one has an excuse they didn't hear me call them to the table.* I can ask Alexa to start a timer while I am cooking and my hands are elbow deep in food.* I can ask Alexa to make it colder (with Ecobee smart thermostat) , pause TV, resume TV, play a show, and turn off the lights while watching tv.* I keep catching my son having the funniest conversations with Alexa, she has definitely answered a lot of "why" questions that would usually go to me. :) He also plays music through his dot.* I can control what time wake up alarm goes off in which room's device.
I've actually owned this device now for a few years now and I can say that it there have been no glitches whatsoever. I do reset it about once a month so that it doesn't slow down and it works great. It plays music, gives me the weather, news, wakes me up in the morning, turns on my lights and alerts me when my Amazon packages have arrived. One of the best purchases I have ever made.
The Echo Dot (3rd Gen) has exceeded my expectations as a compact smart speaker, delivering impressive sound quality and seamless integration with my smart home devices. Its sleek design and responsive voice controls make it a standout addition to any room, offering both functionality and style in a single, affordable package.
This is my first Alexa device, an introduction into smart home connections. Setting it up was extraordinarily easy. The Alexa app, which seems to get updated often, is user friendly and illustrates the robustness of the Alexa ecosystem and operations. I also purchased a firestick 4k, which is Alexa enabled. While I haven't used the echo dot to control the tv, yet, it's coming. (Of note, my smart tv is also Alexa capable. Part of the reason I opted to get the echo dot is the seeming prevalence of compatible and compliant devices.) The sound is fantastic, especially for something this small. It fill a room easily. Another positive is you can use 2 echo dots and link them to output stereo. The evidence that I find this echo dot to be exceptional? I purchased 2 additional echo dot 3 units. And purchased an assortment of smart plugs that are Alexa compliant. Worried about reports of Alexa recording all your conversations? Amazon has made it rather easy to delete recordings. And, on the echo dot 3, you have a button to disable the microphone. Amazon often has specials, including bundles, that effectively lowers the cost. I find those to be significant bargains. I can't speak of durability, yet. But the echo dot 3 is an attractive and solidly built device. After this introduction, I am considering something from the echo show product line. Very high level of recommendation.
I received my Echo Dot in the mail and immediately set it up. I had previously purchased an Echo Dot for my parents and also lived with an Echo for a year. I bought this Echo Dot during a deal to see if I'd like it just as much as the Echo.
For overall functionality, I say it works quite well. It can't answer all of your questions yet, but Alexa is generally knowledgeable about most topics and has many useful features related to personalizing your experience. I especially like the app that allows you to customize questions for any guests in your home that may need help finding things. I've been able to utilize many other features such as lists, morning routine, playing podcasts, playing music, setting timers/reminders, and others. I am planning on purchasing some smart home equipment in the future, but for now I don't know how well the integration works.
As part of the deal to purchase the Echo, I also got an Amazon Music subscription. Unfortunately, the Echo Dot does not have speakers as nice as the Echo does. If you looked up the differences, this is a known discrepancy so I wasn't too upset. The quality honestly isn't bad enough for anyone who isn't purchasing it for music specifically to be bothered by.
The other minor annoyance is that the speaker doesn't seem to be 360, as the Echo is, but unidirectional. This isn't a problem for me, currently, as it is set up on a shelf directed towards where I generally am to listen to podcasts, music, and audiobooks. I'm not sure if the microphone is also unidirectional, but I haven't had any problem with Alexa picking up my voice unless I'm in another room around the corner (which is expected).
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase of the Echo Dot. If I decide to add another unit, I will be purchasing the Echo for my main living space, as I do prefer the 360 speaker and increased speaker quality. However, for a budget option or those not too finicky when it comes to speaker quality or direction, the Echo Dot is a great option for a smart home device.
I already own two echo dots and I bought this one as a gift for my nephew. He always plays with it when he visits.
It’s a great device for setting cooking timers or listen to music while cleaning. I mostly use it to set timers when cooking. It’s very handy as you can set multiple timers, all without pushing a single button. I am a very soft spoken person and I think the voice recognition works better than Siri on my iPhone. Only few times will I have to repeat myself. But again I am soft spoken. It’s very easy to set up different skills. I have connected my Apple Music and Pandora account with no issues. The sound quality is great when listening to music. I was afraid it wouldn’t be loud enough because of its size but that is not the case. I have used it to play relaxing music for my dogs while I’m at work. It’s a great little device for that. I like that I can control the volume and playlist from my phone. If I see that my dog is barking a lot from my in home camera I just log into the Alexa app and play music from the echo dot. My favorite feature about the echo dot is that you can connect it with a smart plug. I have a room in my apartment that has no overhead light. I have connected a lamp to a smart plug. I just walk into the room and say Alexa turn on light. It will turn the light on for me. This is really handy at night when the room is dark. I don’t have to get out the flashlight on my phone and look for the switch to turn on. I would highly recommend buying one. Especially if you are someone that listens to a lot of music or podcasts. Or even if you cook a lot and you have a small gas stove that doesn’t have a timer setting on it. It’s just easier than setting a timer on your microwave or phone.
