MAKING THE BEST BETTERHow do you take an admired and successful integrated amplifier, one that’s won respect and plaudits around the world, and make it even better? Well, if you’re a Cambridge Audio engineer, you examine every aspect of the performance - and then you do everything you can to make it ‘more’. More refined, more precise, more engrossing… more musical. |
UNCOMPROMISED AND UNCOMPROMISINGAll the research, all the development, all the time and effort that’s been expended on the CXA81 has been for one reason alone: to make this the most accomplished and absorbing integrated amplifier ever offered in its class. Every component selected, and every engineering decision taken, is based entirely on the desire to progress. The CXA81 has been designed and specified without compromise, in order to deliver the complete musical picture. |
THE WHOLE STORYThe CXA81 is designed to bring your music to life, no matter how it’s stored. So it features an entirely new digital board, including the cutting-edge ESS Sabre ES9016 digital-to-analogue convertor. Which means digital audio files up to a heady 32bit/384kHz, or DSD256, are brought dramatically to life, with every detail and nuance delivered intact and in full. The CXA81 combines unparalleled accuracy with vivid musicality, without sacrificing convenience. |

POWER AND CONTROLThanks to numerous improvements and upgrades - and thanks to an overspecified toroidal transformer - the CXA81 delivers a prodigious 80 watts of power per channel. This means the CXA81 has complete authority over even the most demanding speakers, it means big dynamic shifts in music are handled with total control, and it means the whole musical picture is available no matter if you’re playing at discreet background levels or at party-time volumes. |
ABSOLUTE FLEXIBILITYThe CXA81 covers all connectivity bases, giving you complete freedom of choice. As well as digital optical and digital coaxial inputs, it features unbalanced stereo RCA inputs alongside balanced XLR sockets - and wireless connectivity via Bluetooth’s cutting-edge aptX HD standard is on board too. So there’s no need to compromise on performance in the name of convenience. |
UNMATCHED SONIC INTEGRITYAt the heart of the CXA81 beats a completely reimagined and redesigned power amplifier stage with optimised capacitor values. The resulting sound is pristine but not clinical, with unrivalled musical coherence no matter the source. |

Cambridge knocks it outta the park.
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021
1) The treble is too bright with my speakers (GR AV-1). I listen to a lot of music that has a wide dynamic range (mostly classical and jazz). With the volume set at a reasonable level for quieter sections of music, I frequently had to grab the remote when a crescendo comes along to keep from being blown out of the room with shill highs. And since there are no bass/treble controls, I couldn't compensate for that issue. I don't know if there is actually a "V" shaped frequency response with the amp, but if seems like it with my setup.
2) The remote is large, and at least 75% of the buttons on the remote have nothing to do with this amp. They control functions on other Cambridge products which I will never own. For this amp, the remote functions are on/off, input, mute. That's it. The remote for this amp should be very small. if someone purchases another Cambridge product that needed the other functions, the remote that comes with it should provide what is needed. It seems that Cambridge is including the same remote with all products, regardless of the functions needed for each product.
3) Using the remote to adjust the volume was annoying because it would always overshoot. I couldn't turn the volume up or down just a touch. I believe this is because the volume control is physically rotated by a motor (which is probably a good thing). My speakers are fairly sensitive, and this amp is definitely more powerful that what is required to blow you out of the room with those speakers. So a little overshoot on the volume control was always too much.
There is no visual indication on the amp for what the volume is set at under normal lighting. The only indication is a small tick mark on the volume knob, which has too little contrast to the knob itself. So you cannot easily see it.
Other than those issues, I like the amp a lot. Reluctantly, I decided to return it.
Though the Yamaha sounds great (only $350), it can’t compare with the new British combo. The soundstage is wider, deeper, and taller with a rock-solid center image, and I haven’t even upgraded my speakers yet (got my eyes on a new pair of Tannoys or KEFs). Currently, the CXA81 is driving a pair of JBL Studio 590s.
The CXA81 does everything well, but there’s something intangible, I can’t quite put my finger on. The music has life and power I hadn’t noticed before. This amp makes me move. Foot tapping, dancing, singing. The amp brings the music to life.
The DAC, Bluetooth, and multiple digital inputs sound great as well and are much improved over my prior equipment.
The CXA81 does benefit from a run-in period. It sounds better everyday 👍.
