Although I bought this without listening in a shop, I thought it sounds perfectly balanced in all genres, which means all ranges of sound are not exaggerated and thus makes my ears pleasant.
However, I cannot say that this is perfect for everyone. Musical and acoustic tastes really depend on the person and there might be other speakers that will make you happy at more affordable price. Nevertheless, all I can say it that I just love muso 2!
First, I got this as a one-box solution for music in a large, open multifunction living space. I contemplated getting other one-box solutions, or an amp and nice wireless bookshelf speakers, but I needed them to have Airplay2. I have a space that's prob about 1000sqft and this thing plays more than loud enough to fill this space, and then some, with pretty good, balanced tones and plenty of bass (I'd like a bit more clarity in the upper-midtones, but it's not a critical listening space).
But the sound is not at all omnidirectional; it comes straight out the front of the device, and there's zero stereo separation except for an approx 25% angle directly in front of the device. From anywhere else in the room, it might as well be a mono speaker, albeit a very good one. This means that it really works best in a relatively narrow rectangular room where you place the speaker way at one end of the room.
On the other main point, it's nice that this thing has HDMI eARC, and can function as a soundbar. But for me, that's just a nice extra that I might use someday on an auxiliary TV somewhere else in the house. It'll be better than the built-in speakers in the TV, but you're not getting even basic amounts of surround sound out of it. You can spend half of the price of this (and I got the wood-grained version; more on that below) and get an amazing dedicated surround soundbar setup that will blow this out of the water for TV surround sound.
Some other general notes:
- At the time of this writing, the black version is $400 more than the wood-grained version. That is a ridiculous markup, and at $1800, it would be at the point where I'd consider paying the extra to jump to something better instead.
- The components in this device are very good. Nice drivers, separate class AB amps for each driver (from what I've read)... these do come out in the quality of the sound.
- Setup was kind of a big pain. On first connection, the device forced a firmware update, which hung, and multiple restarts did not fix the problem. I had to reset the whole device (by sticking a pin in the hole on the side of the device) 3 times before it would download properly...because the app refused to work at all until the firmware was fully updated. And I didn't realize that the update was hanging until I did more reading online and realized that the LED light on the side of the device actually flashes different colors, and they mean different things. This was NOT a good experience, and I almost returned the thing immediately. If I'm paying $1400 for what amounts to a fancy radio, it needs to work right out of the box.
- Check the dimensions of this, and your furniture before you buy. It's pretty wide, and very deep... you can't just stick it on a bookshelf because it will probably stick out.
In the end, it's fully self-contained, it supports the functions that I need (especially AirPlay2), it's stylish (appeasing the girlfriend), and it sounds pretty good (with the caveats on the directionality of sound). I kept it.
Initial set up took me a while and some trouble. Not sure what worked, but it eventually did. But once set up, everything works seamlessly. I use Spotify and Qobuz - both integrate just as expected.
Not for anyone looking for super deep room filling Bass, or someone who wants this as a party set up - I think this is designed for someone with finesse, someone looking for sonic details and appreciates quality over decibel.
If you are looking just for a smart speaker, instead, the competition is tough. My Mu-so have had many connection issues via bluetooth and AirPlay, many more than with any other wireless speaker I have owned, and I tried quite a few. In particular, JBL/Harman-Kardon and Band & Olufsen speakers are much more reliable in this sense.
The Mu-so is the same price range as B&O Level and Balance, and it is similar in sound quality, though it really depends on the music you listen to and your taste: the Mu-so is great on mid-range, but lacks in bass; The B&O Balance has an appreciably wider frequency range, so it allows you to appreciate the full spectrum. The B&O Level has a similar sound performance as the Mu-so, but it is portable and can be upgraded.
I have had several B&O speakers but I wanted to try this and the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Wedge because many online reviews put them at the top of sound quality; my personal conclusion is that some reviews are biased towards British manufacturers. I'm not an audio technician, but they don't sound any better than B&O or JBL/HK in the same price range.
Eventually, the real question for me was: do you really get 3x-5x the sound quality of a cheaper but excellent speaker, such as the B&O Beolit or the HK Onyx 6? After having compared them extensively (mostly with pop/rock/ethnic music), I decided that for me the Mu-so was not worthy. The B&O Beolit and the HK Onyx 6 deliver an excellent listening experience and can be moved around the house and outdoor; they even have slightly better basses, at expenses of mid-ranges, though.
After having tried tens of wireless speakers, I came to the (probably obvious) conclusion that the best speaker is the one that fits your use and taste. Price is not directly proportional to sound quality: a few hundreds dollars can already buy you a speaker that may make you perfectly happy.
