About the author
Andy Babiuk is a musician, writer, producer, founding member of the Chesterfield Kings, has been a professional in the music industry for more than 30 years and is the owner of a boutique music shop Andy Babiuk's Fab Gear http://www.andybabiuksfabgear.com. He is currently in the band The Empty Hearts featuring Elliot Easton from The Cars on lead guitar, Clem Burke from Blondie on drums, and Wally Palmar from The Romantics on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. The Empty Hearts LP release, August 5th, 2014. He is a staff consultant to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and consultant to major auction houses in London and New York. Andy is a respected expert on vintage guitars and the foremost authority on the equipment used by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Andy perceived the need for a book about The Beatles' gear when he tried to emulate some of their recorded sounds for his own band, The Chesterfield Kings. Andy then embarked on six years of research for Beatles Gear, during which time he interviewed over 400 people who worked with or were closely associated with The Beatles, listened to hundreds of recordings, watched miles of film, and amassed a vast library of documents and photographic evidence of The Beatles using their instruments and equipment. The result is this most detailed account of The Beatles and the tools that they used, on-stage and in the studio. As a follow up to his first book Beatles Gear, Babiuk worked nine years resurching and writing Rolling Stones Gear - a history of the equipment used by The Rolling Stones. Andy worked directly with memebers of the Stones and photographed The Rolling Stones actual guitars and equipment. His critically acclaimed books Beatles Gear (2001) and Rolling Stones Gear (2014) are books that manage to be both historical documents and an entertaining read. Andy is also the author of the book The Story of Paul Bigsby: Father Of The Modern Electric Solidbody Guitar, published in February 2009. He has worked as the technical consultant and associate music supervisor of Davis Chase’s feature film Not Fade Away released by Paramount Pictures in the fall of 2012. He lives in Rochester, New York, with his wife, six children and a very large collection of guitars and music memorabilia. He can be contacted at andy@andybabiuksfabgear.com

If you are 1) a gear head; 2) a Stones fan; 3) just love beautiful photography - this is your book. It is a huge collection of photos of vintage guitars, amps with explanations of their era and what recordings or tours they were used on. (There is also mention of drums and basses - but it will be a couple years until I get to that.)
The authors started the Chesterfield Kings - a talented Rochester band that had a very accurate retro garage sound. Little Steven territory. The artwork on their LP "Let's Go Get Stoned" is a great reference to an early Stones album - Aftermath - that had some brilliant flourishes by the late Brian Jones. So the authors are real Stones fans - and real musicians. Who else would have had the devotion to assemble this? It is a labor of love.
You can flip though idly and marvel at the pictures for weeks. Or you can pick a chapter and dig into the details. Which is exhaustive. I have been too busy marveling at the pages to find out how the authors got this kind of access to the Stones' equipment - to photograph and to get the back stories. Their target audience might not be large - but there are a few of us crazed gear fiends out here - and this book will keep us busy for a long time.
To the authors - thanks for your diligence. It is quite an accomplishment.
Clocking in at almost 700 pages, this beautiful hardback is HEAVY, with exceptional paper quality. Which is especially a good thing, because the pictures in this book are printed with such detail and clarity. All the famous instruments (Micawber, Gloria, etc.) get multiple shots, so you can see all the little grooves, finishes, and the like that give each instrument its character. The images are mostly shown by themselves and "in action" (meaning being played by The Stones), which gives great context.
If that would be all there is, I'd be satisfied, but there is substantial text that explains the gear. Whether it be when and where each Stone received his instrument or what adjustments have been made from stock or traditional settings (pickups, tuners, etc.), it's all there. This is THE REFERENCE you'll need if you are a musician and Stones fan. I've never seen anything like it.
Even if you don't play or are very musical yourself, you'll still want this book. This is the best Stones book I have had the pleasure of owning (with maybe the exception of Keith's book. Maybe.). So many music books about The Rolling Stones, or any band, don't really go into detail about the one thing that made us fans in the first place: the music. This book makes up for all that. This holy grail is currently more than $20 off from the MSRP, but even at the original $60, it's worth it.
If you're on the fence, get this now. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy it as much as I am! Finally, the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band gets the book they deserve.
