Any genuine fan of David Crosby's music knows that he has had an explosion of creativity in recent years, beginning with the "Croz" album. IMO, the "For Free" album continues that trend, and raises the bar even higher. The album continues the recent innovative trend, exploring new territory, and providing fresh, new sounds that are both unexpected yet somehow familiar, without repeating past achievements.
The opening track, "River Rise", features the unmistakable voice of Michael McDonald singing high harmony. The song covers a wide dynamic range, going from subtle restrained energy to powerful, flat-out rockin', maintaining an infectious melody throughout.
Track 2, "I Think" has grown on me, and now might well be my favorite track. Track 3, "The Other Side Of Midnight" could easily have been a CSN/CSNY song with its layers of dense vocal harmony, but its jazz-influenced harmonies are an intriguing departure from any of the tracks he recorded with former bandmates Stills, Nash, and Young.
Track 4, "Rodriguez For A Night" would have been a surprise in its Steely Dan-like vibe if I hadn't already heard the dead-ringer Dan-esque "She's Got To Be Somewhere" on Croz's earlier "Sky Trails" album, the difference being that "Rodriguez..." was actually co-written with Croz by Donald Fagen. Quality recognizes quality.
Those four tracks alone would be worth the price of the CD. There's plenty more where that came from on this album, but that's enough of the blow-by-blow, track-by-track rundown. i do have to say that I'm biased; I've been a fan of Croz's music since his days with The Byrds. He has certainly had his ups and downs, in his professional relationships and his personal life, and while his social conscience compels him to pontificate about political ills (some of which he's not wrong about), he has no clue that politics itself is the problem, not the solution. But none of that matters to me; I only care about the music he makes.
If you appreciate the fact that Croz's solo albums — and his work with James Raymond and Jeff Pevar in CPR — clearly establish that Crosby was the nascent musical genius in The Byrds, just buy the "For Free" CD and drool over these wondrous musical gems for yourself. For my part, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. He's on a roll.
Following a feverish rush of three new albums released in 2016, 2017 and 2018, Crosby followers had to wait for three years for this release, which obviously is a result of the pandemic, but the wait was absolutely worth it, as this album is every bit as magnificent as everything else Crosby created over the years. His vocal abilities and songwriting are in full bloom and he found an ideal partner in Raymond to support him vocally, instrumentally and most importantly mentally, enabling him to continue his quest of producing some of the greatest music ever made.
All the songs on the album are absolutely perfect, faithfully continuing Crosby’s love of great melody, vocal harmonies and intelligent lyrics, which are nowhere to be found in today’s music making. If one wouldn’t know when the album was written and recorded, it might have as well originated somewhere in the good old 1960s. This remarkable consistency is simply marvelous and almost incomprehensible, especially in view of its effectiveness.
Overall this is a superb addition to Crosby’s recorded legacy and a miracle of survival. God only knows how many more albums Crosby will record in the days to come, but I pray they will come again. He is a truly unique figure and his music is a blessing from heaven…

The title track is a rendition of Joni Mitchell's For Free in an accomplished duet with Sarah Jarosz which works surprisingly well. The rest of the songs are all new originals, sometimes with his vocals half spoken, his son James Raymond produces the album and plays guitar and keyboards to good effect. Donald Fagen from Steely Dan co writes Rodriguez For the Night, and there is a sophisticated relaxed jazzy feel to the whole album. Most of the songs are commendably short, clocking in at no more than 3 1/2 minutes ,and the whole album of 10 songs glides by very pleasantly. All of the songs and playing is of a consistently high standard throughout, and the whole album hangs together well. Overall much better than I had expected, well worth getting, strongly recommended.
Inevitably with someone of his age many of the songs are reflective, looking back on his life and the passing of time. Rather than being melancholy they are surprisingly upbeat and positive creating a warm mellow vibe for the album that is lovely to listen to, relaxed, and comfortable. The opening track River Rise is a bit more upbeat and features Michael McDonald on shared vocals and is a joyous start to proceedings. I Think I is a personal quest song, quiet, calm, and highlighting that he has found his way in life. Shot At Me is a more contemporary political song talking with a guy back from the Middle East highlighting what is important in maintaining your life.
