To be Frank, this Book is not for the Starting Musician/Guitarist. However, It might give a starting Musician/Guitarist something to look forward to by just briefly looking through the book and read how creative you can be, by peeking just a little Ahead :-) Naturally working with this book is, for someone who has got at least the basics: Pentatonic/Maj,Min scales/Chord forms and shapes throughout the Fretboard, Chords Progressions and who knows how to structure it into Music in a Musical way is a must! If you don't. Go to a great teacher who teaches you this FIRST.
Anyway,
Joe's Book is chock full of usable knowledge and insights. Even though I have studied on M.I. G.I.T. and seen a lot of great teachers, workshops bands, musicians and Philosophy, I found really new and fresh ideas, also the way Joe presents the knowledge to the Student/Reader, which is an art in itself, believe you me. There are not many People on this Earth who actually have the Gift of being a Teacher with Clarity. Joe has both in my view.
I can let you in on a little secret I have discovered myself. It's not just about the Music, it's about the intention, Love, Fun and Desire to express that Joy with a clear message that automatically invites and transforms you to a better you: For the one that's making the Art and the One that is listening to it. Music is just a form, a concept. Think about it :-) H.N.
This little book is really underestimated and might be one of the most revealing Eyeopeners if you let it. When you actually focus on just this little book for 1 year, which is just about 4 lessons per month, and do all the exercises, it creates awareness. Believe me. At the same time come up with your own ideas, write them down, and practice those again you will create an evolution. Basically it makes you think for yourself and music much clearer! Timeless!
When you are a serious Artist/Guitarist/Composer/Teacher :
Buy it, Buy it, Buy it !
Then....
Study it, Study it and Study it!
I hope I have helped you in making probably one of the wisest investment decisions :-)
Carpe Diem,
Henri Nolen
Exactly! Well worth the $
To achieve what you're looking for from this book, you have to dedicate SLOW time to practicing with it. It's not just open & play, it's a little more complicated.
I wish I gave it a chance and tried it again, but so far I'm not interested...as I am still not so advanced in theory to take good advantage of this book.
Buy it only if you're serious about learning theory & a little of complicated stuff.
It has a ton of good information, but not yet useful to me.
Inside this little book you will find: helpful scale, chord and improvisation exercises, along with tips for improving dexterity, better understanding the fretboard, and getting the most out of your practice and playing time.
For those who may not be familiar with Joe- he taught some of the great rock guitarists of our time including Steve Vai, and even the lead guitarist from Metallica. Joe's mastery of the instrument, and innovative techniques are incredible! Get this book and work the exercises into your practice routine. You'll be glad that you did!
Also, be sure to pick up some of Joe's CDs and DVDs. To see the master in action, and get a great behind the scenes tour of Joe's stage set-up, effects pedals, and guitars check out "Live in San Francisco" available on DVD and CD. My personal favs from his CDs are "Crystal Planet" and one of his early CDs- "Surfing With the Alien". Listen to "Satch Boogie" or "Surfing with the Alien"- it will rock your socks off!!
If you are interested in guitar solos (who isn't?), you will love this book for what it will do to your knowledge and perspective of the guitar.
Happy strumming!
