Editorial Reviews
The follow-up to the band's GRAMMY-nominated 2021 LP, Heavy Load Blues. It's remarkable synthesis of songs and musicality (all written by Haynes except for two, full-band penned tracks) that toggles between heavy rock, electric blues, soul, funk, spoken word, English chamber-folk, and psychedelia; enhanced by an assortment of contributing artists including Billy F Gibbons, Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster, Billy Bob Thornton, and Celisse. Deluxe 2 CD set includes the bonus Time Of The Signs EP.

If his brain didn't fully assimilate it the first time, which it usually didn't, he listened again. After all, you can't really know if you dig something that you've only heard once. Too much flies by.
This album certainly lives up to any such expectations. As with the band's last studio collection of original material (Revolution Come...Revolution Go), one hears traces of the James Gang, Rare Earth, the Allmans and Zeppelin; but ultimately, this is the distinctive music of Gov't Mule. It's often bluesy but not always, and it's full of heavy groove, cool extra percussion and catchy riffs.
This is what it was like for many years. You listened to the physical media, optimally with headphones, and really got into the music. It's not difficult to do that here: These two CDs are mastered phenomenally well, with no unnecessary compression at the mastering stage. (Wish I could say the same for the Black Crowes' latest.)
You didn't "stream" it or put it on as background noise. You sat and listened. You tried to pick up all the tiny, imaginative bits thrown in here and there (these songs are full of them). The best music rewards attentive listening, and this is the best non-"archival" album to be issued by anyone in years.
What's more, this latest release (it didn't "drop," you impressionables -- it was released) is consistently creative, recorded on analogue tape, and played by humans on real instruments. There's no click track. There's no auto-tuning. There's no cheating of any kind.
What you're hearing is great rock music being played live in the studio, so to speak, with the cats playing off each other, listening closely to the whole sound, reacting, improvising as a single unit, and capturing the moments as they fly by, whereas less experienced players would let them escape...rocking for real, like bands of all kinds once did, and are forever supposed to.
The lyrics seldom make any sense, but they don't have to. They're only words. We're listening to sounds, not reading a book. There are some interesting, inventive risks taken, since this is definitely one heavy group of cats who give their audience credit for having open ears and adventurous tastes. Some of the unorthodox uses of woodwinds and brass, together with the tumbling, mean guitar progressions, verge on Zappa-level originality. Other songs are just pure, funky fun.
That was how it used to be. Sometimes, thanks almost exclusively to Warren and the boys, it still is.
The songs on this album are the best since the High 'n' Mighty album IMO, and they present a level of songcrafting that is unmatched by their previous efforts! The only weak track presented here is the token reggae (ish) track, "The River Only Flows One Way", featuring the barely-singing Billy Bob Thornton (lol). Pretty boring! But given the strength of the other songs, I won't remove a star in the above rating.
This album definitely refocuses the group in a more sophisticated style arrangement after giving us their down 'n' dirty best efforts in their excellent recent Heavy Load Blues album, which I LOVED.
The bonus EP included in this deluxe 2-disc version is also great, MINUS the alternate take of...yep, you guessed it...the WORST SONG on the main CD (The River Only Flows One Way), with Warren handling the vocal duties on this take...kind of a throwback to the Shout! album, with dual versions of each song featuring a guest vocalist as well as a version featuring Warren's vocal. Unfortunately, Warren's turn on the vocal still doesn't make this song any more interesting to listen to lol!
Still, a fine job by the Mule here, and highly recommended for all Mule fans and fans of REAL MUSIC! Keep it going, guys!!

THE RIVER ONLY FLOWS ONE WAY.
