The polyphonic mode isn't as accurate as when you check each string individually (in fact, yes, the modes appear not to agree perfectly sometimes, as one guy who gave it two stars noted), but the polyphonic function gives you a quick and easy way to see if a string is so far out of tune that you should take the time to adjust it. One strum across all the strings and a quick glance is all it takes to see where things are at, and it's a super fast way to tune all your strings at once if you're in a hurry and don't want to tune each string one at a time to perfection (and if you do, then you may also suffer from OCD). Strobe mode is very accurate, but a little trippy to decipher until you get used to it, then it's very fast (also sort of space-age and fun).
When deciding to purchase this I read some reviews that complained that they didn't like the clip, but I don't agree with them. It appears minimalist, functional, and robust. I'm not sure what those other folks expect. From an aesthetic design standpoint, this tuner is a lot less obtrusive and far more slick looking than the other options out there. One guy said he was afraid it could scratch his headstock, but I think you'd have to work at it pretty hard for that to happen.
I also read some reviews that complained that the PolyTune Clip was a little fussy about where it's placed on the headstock in order to read all the strings. I found this to be somewhat true, but not an issue for me since it works great on the end of my Martin acoustic headstock, and in the middle of both my Fender Stratocaster headstocks (though not as well on the tip of the Stratocaster headstock where it's harder to see anyway). Others complained that since it doesn't swivel in all directions they didn't like it, but I've not really found that to be a problem for me since the best placements on my headstocks also happen to be in places and at an angle where it's easy to see. I also suspect that if it had another point to swivel from it may not be as accurate and sensitive as it is since more rotating parts means more places to negatively affect the vibrations it's trying to sense.
In order to get the most out of it, you probably need to read the manual. I suspect some of the negative reviewers aren't big on doing that, and that's why they're happier with the less expensive clip-on tuners. Or maybe they just got a defective unit, who knows.
I have expensive guitars and I like to keep them perfect with no scratches, Everytime I put this tuner on a guitar, I cringe and curse the designer. What was he thinking to use exposed sheet metal on a tool that was going to live on a $5000 instrument??
But don't fret - I have the perfect solution. Snark makes just OK tuners but they have a great clip design. So I took off the TC clip and used double back tape to tape the TC tuner to the Snark body. Looks hokey, but works great now!

The tuner is a lot smaller than most pictures would have you believe. The clip is mostly metal, compared to plastic in most competitors. Accuracy seems very good - I don't have the capacity to test the accuracy scientifically, but it sounds good to my ear (I've played guitar for over 40 years) and compares favorably with the other tuners I referenced it against - namely a Boss TU-3 and a PolyTune Mini, as well as other clip on tuners (see below).
I have heard some complaints that the adjustability is only on one plane, so you can't place the tuner "just so", but in practice, I haven't had a problem putting it where it is highly visible on a variety of guitar head stocks, both 6 on a side (Fender style) or 3x3 (Gibson/Guild, etc.). When you “flip” the tuner to attach it “upside down”, the display automatically adjusts.
So, let's compare to some of the competitors that reside in my music room.
A lot of my friends love the Snark tuners - I own a few, myself. They are cheaper - a lot cheaper, and work pretty well. However, I have seen too many break at the clip for me to spend more money on them. Snark SN-1 Tuner
D'Addario NS Micro-clip tuners. Hard to position just right and the display is too small to really tune easily. D'Addario NS Micro Clip-On Tuner They make a different model that has a more flexible clamp system - making it easier to find the right spot, but the too-small display plagues this one as well. D'Addario NS Micro Universal Tuner
Up until now my favorite clip-on tuner is the Intellitouch PT-10. Intellitouch PT10 Mini Clip-On Tuner - Easy to use, and a display that is easy to "dial-in". While I still like this model, and will use them when the occasion warrants it, it is a slight step below the PolyTune clip.
What I liked about the PolyTune Clip:
* Style - the multiple LED lights are easy to read and make it easy to dial in the proper pitch. When the string is out of tune you see red lights and green when it is in tune. The multiple LEDs make it easy to see just how far out of tune you are.
* The ability to check all strings at once (the "PolyTune" feature is unique to TC Electronics).
* Multiple tunings available (and tuning for Bass guitar)
* Ease of use.
* Quality - I have never bought a TC Electronics product (And I have a lot of their products) that wasn't really well built.
What I didn't like:
* Price - at around $49 street price, they are more money than some, but they are a lot better built. I got this one through Amazon Vine to evaluate, but I also bought another one because I like them a lot!
* The cheap, flimsy instruction sheet written in extremely small type that was hard to read. You'd think for $50 that they'd give you a copy of the manual (which is very well written and easy to follow). You can download the owner's manual from the TC Electronics website.
Clip-on tuners are easy to use, especially in a live setting. Even the fact that you can almost maintain eye contact with your audience while tuning, rather than looking down at a floor mounted tuner adds professionalism to your performance. The TC Electronics PolyTune Clip is the best clip on tuner I’ve had the pleasure of working with to date.
