Product Description
Classic OD tones in a compact pedal with simple, no-fuss operation. Along with standard Volume, Drive, and Tone controls, the OCD's HP/LP (High Peak/Low Peak) switch takes the pedal from a clean boost to manic, sustain-laden distortion. True bypass switching. The Fulltone OCD V2 (Obsessive Compulsive Drive) overdrive pedal packs classic OD tones into a compact pedal with simple, no-fuss operation. From heavy crunch rich with overtones and feedback to spanky cleans, the OCD delivers the sounds of a great tube amp, as sell as the same sensitivity and response to your playing style. Along with standard Volume, Drive, and Tone controls, the OCD V2's HP/LP (High Peak/Low Peak) switch takes the pedal from a clean boost to manic, sustain-laden distortion. True bypass switching. Some notable V2 updates to the classic OCD: -Output buffer (when pedal is turned on in True-Bypass mode, or always when in Enhanced Bypass mode), which eliminates it from being influenced by effects that came after it. Translation: Your sound remains consistent regardless of placement in today’s more complex signal-chains, loopers and pedalboards. This buffer also had a positive effect on the sound, it reduced loading on the pedal’s hard-clipping stage, allowing more sustain of both the sound and the overtones. -Class A configured discrete 2N5457 JFET input section, raising the input impedance to 1 mega ohms (previously 330K) and increasing the dynamics. This results in significantly better interaction with both single-coil and humbuckers. -Internal switch to choose between ”Enhanced Bypass” and True-Bypass, and with no popping sound in either mode. Visual Changes The Fulltone OCD V2 has slightly smaller “OCD” and “Fulltone” logos, along with “Built in the USA” under the Fulltone logo. Next, the In and Out jacks are placed exactly at the halfway point of the left and right sides on V2, whereas with all previous versions the jacks were located more toward the bottom. I mostly use it with the volume dimed out, drive at 0, and tone at 12 o clock for boosts, but there are several other usable tones in this box. Another journey entirely, but the OR15 especially hates fuzz pedals (probably due to lack of headroom). The Fulltone OCD with the gain and tone knobs dialed in just right (also with tweaks to amp controls AS WELL AS guitar tone adjustments) pretty much nails a classic Sleep or Sabbath-y fuzz tone. You can also get a wicked Marshall-like punk tone with the gain set to around 11-2 o clock on the pedal and the gain on the amp at around 10-11 o clock. It's very accommodating for the types of music I play.
If you have a similar set up and play similar genres, I'm really don't think there is anything better. I've gone through several Tube Screamer variations (Analogman modded Ibanez TS9, Maxon OD9, Maxon 808), and while the Maxon OD808 probably got the closest to what I was looking for I was still never truly happy with the way it colored my amp's natural tone. The inclusion of True Bypass on the OCD is also a win over the Maxon. I also went through a few clean boosts, like the BBE Boosta Grande and MXR Micro Amp. Both of these pedals function great for strictly volume boosts (nod to the BBE for being utterly transparent), but the option of added grit on the OCD for sustain and compression was a must for me.
Side note: If you want are going down a Fuzz pedal rabbit-hole with either of these amps, here's my advice. The OR15 lacks the proper headroom to get usable sounds out of a Fuzz pedal, but using an OD while dialing in all your knobs works wonders. The amp already has a pretty great fuzz tone built-in. The Rocker 30 is more kind to Fuzz pedals, but is still very picky. In my opinion, the search should probably end with a Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh. Lots of great tonal option with this combo.
I take time to read reviews and listen to as many audio samples of effects pedals as I can on websites and YouTube, and once I narrow down my choices I generally order in the ones I want to try with my own setup, do a shoot-out, keep the ones that suit me and send back the ones that don't. So I always make sure I can return these for a refund if they don't work out. What works for me may not work for you, but maybe this will give you an idea of what the pedal can do.
