Product Description
Legendary Canadian thrash/heavy metal masters Annihilator have lacerated many senses over the years with their supreme, aggressive metal mastery, and on January, 27th, 2017, their legion of loyal fans can look forward to a series of fresh sensory experiences as Annihilator proudly present Triple Threat, a three-disc collection of Annihilator’s music in a trio of very different scenarios. The main disc comprises a set of Annihilator’s classics performed acoustically, with band leader/guitarist/ songwriter and vocalist Jeff Waters bringing together band members Aaron Homma and Richard Hinks, Vancouver BC drummer and friend Marc LeFrance plus Ottawa session player Pat Robillard. Recorded and mixed by Waters (with Marty Sobb), this quintet recorded everything live, off the floor and in single takes at Watersound Studios in Dunrobin, Canada during late May and early June, 2016, giving Waters one of the most challenging, satisfying and perhaps ‘electric’ creative moments in his career. The second disc will feature Annihilator’s vicious set from the 2016 Bang Your Head Festival, a set which illustrates the very best of what Annihilator is known for –tight, sharp, technically-excellent and melodic thrash metal music. It will also contain some exclusive inside-Annihilator off-stage perspective, courtesy of Jeff Waters’ own camera, which captures further elements, flavours and detail of the band which fans will flip over. “This was one of the coolest things I have done in my long career. Having 5 people in a room, from all different backgrounds and talents, coming together to play songs from the past and to try to sound like we are one but totally live and with feel. This was one of the biggest challenges that Annihilator has faced, musically, but what impressed me the most was how you can hear all the individual styles each player has and how we were able to glue the playing and feel together. Done all in one take and with all the musical blemishes and imperfections that I would never normally let slide! This set covers some of the melodic songs, one even from 1984 (when a few of these guys were not even born!) and I just had to do this once in my life… to challenge myself and maybe show some others that it’s not always just about the metal and the thrash! Rock n’ Roll & and ballads are found everywhere in Heavy Metal. Annihilator are made up of a helluva lot of styles, mixed into one. That’s exactly what kind of musicians I put together for this set… a mixed bag of Rockers & Metalheads and they made our legacy proud! Enjoy… we sure love this one.” Jeff Waters Annihilator Triple Threat will be available in several formats, including DVD/2CDs, Blu-Ray/2CDs, a 2CD audio-only and digital download. The BluRay and DVD visual content is split in 3 parts: •Chapter I – Annihilator Un-Plugged: The Watersound Studios Sessions (62 mins) •Chapter II – Annihilator Live at the BANG YOUR HEAD Festival (45 mins) •Chapter III - ANNIHILATOR: Summer Mini-Documentary 2016 (45 mins) •Plus Bonus Video Chapters: "Jeff's Commentary On The Acoustic Songs" and "Jeff Answers Fan Questions". “So the first time that I heard Annihilator, I think it was 1989 and me and Nick Menza and Marty Friedman would listen to the Alice In Hell record, driving to and from rehearsal, all the time… cause we were basically writing the Rust In Peace record; we’d listen to it all the time. Annihilator really is Canada’s thrash band; kind of an extension of the Big Four. We have Sepultura in the South, we have Annihilator to the North. One of the pack, one of the tribe. I love Jeff, I love the band, I love his playing. His compositions are terrific. Annihilator rules.” David Ellefson (Megadeth)

The Blu-ray disc included is loaded with content. If you're a huge Annihilator fan like me, your Live at Masters of Rock 2008 and Live at Wacken 2013 DVDs from Annihilator are probably getting a bit stale from being played time and time again. I was craving some new Annihilator content to watch at home, and Triple Threat really delivers. This disc starts off with an acoustic set from Annihilator members Jeff Waters, Aaron Homma, and Rich Hinks, along with two special guests. This setlist includes classics and deep cuts from the catalog of Annihilator. It is interesting to hear metal songs played this way, and very mellowing. It appears to have been filmed in the Annihilator rehearsal space. Also included on this disc is a summer 2016 documentary about the band. It features interviews with the current lineup of Annihilator and how they came to become part of the band. This documentary also has some interviews with famous and everyday fans of Annihilator alike. As far as I know there has not been a proper documentary of Annihilator done before, so this was nice to see.
The highlight of this Blu-ray is by far the live video from Bang Your Head 2016. Filmed on a beautiful summer day in 2016, the whole band sounds incredible here and the footage is very entertaining to watch. Crisp, clear picture and sound as expected. This is the first official live home video release from the new lineup of Annihilator featuring Aaron Homma on guitar, Rich Hinks on bass, Fabio Alessandrini on drums, and Jeff Waters on lead vocals/guitar. I was initially a bit skeptical about Jeff Waters taking on lead vocals after the departure of lead vocalist Dave Padden, but this Blu-ray put those fears to rest. Jeff Waters does a great job at singing the Annihilator catalog whether it's a song he sang on originally or not. The new lineup of the band really delivers and puts on an incredible sounding show. I cannot recommend adding this to your live concert DVD collection enough, especially if you're a mega Annihilator fan like myself.

Next is the live section and....wow. I was sad to hear Mike Mangini had left and didn't expect Jeff Waters to find a replacement as good. Well, I was wrong. Fabio Allesandrini is an absolute MONSTER behind the kit, even if he does look like a member of Faster Pussycat circa 1987. Truly, watching this young guy drum is a wonderful thing. I also have to commend the bassist, Rich Hinks who is also an excellent backing vocalist, both here and in the acoustic section. Aaron Homma is a brilliant second guitar player who could shred with the best of them in any band but takes something of a back seat here. The chemistry and camaraderie of all the members really shines through and to see a band having so much fun always makes a performance that more exciting to watch. Irritatingly for me, I'd rather they played "Stonewall" live rather than included it in the acoustic section but that's a minor quibble. In general the setlist is great if a little short. BluRay has more capacity and it might have been good to include another concert as a bonus the way Vader did in their "Night of the Apocalypse" set. Maybe I'm being greedy!
Finally, there's a documentary where Jeff talks about his life and the band and the new members. It's an interesting watch and rounds out the set nicely although you probably won't return to that disc very often.
Overall, if you enjoy great thrash metal you'll enjoy this set. And if you enjoy great acoustic rock, played by master musicians, you'll enjoy it doubly - triply even!
Highly recommended.
