I got the LinkStation to store movies and Time Machine backups for my Mac. It works great! To make the LinkStation work with a Roku, just enable DLNA on a folder on the LinkStation, and install the "Roku Media Player" app on the Roku. That's it! The "Roku Media Player" app sees the LinkStation and plays my MP4 and M4V files flawlessly (I have the Roku HD, a model that's a couple years old). Note that AVI files don't seem to be recognized, so when you rip your DVDs, pick your format accordingly.

The LinkStation is initially setup with RAID 0, so if you care about your data, be sure to rebuild the RAID volume as RAID 1. That was a painfully slow process. It took about a day for the LinkStation to rebuild the two 3TB drives as a RAID 1 volume.

Setting up Time Machine backups from my Mac to the LinkStation was seamless and easy -- took about 5 minutes.

*** UPDATE 11 MONTHS LATER ***

After 11 months one of the drives failed on this unit. This happens sometimes, and I had the LS420 in a RAID 1 configuration, so no data was lost. However, the warranty support I'm getting from Buffalo is disappointing. They refuse to send a drive to replace the one failed drive. That would have been the easiest option for everyone -- I could have rebuilt the RAID and never skipped a beat. But instead they insist I send in the whole unit in, including both drives.

Ok, sounds awesome, except for one small detail. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO PUT 3TB OF DATA IN THE MEAN TIME???? Seriously, you can't you just send one drive to replace the bad mirror? Would you really rather replace the whole thing, which HAS to cost twice as much as a single drive???? Total awesomeness!

So I pointedly ask the tech guy where I'm supposed to put my 3TB of data while the unit is in their shop, and he belatedly tells me that they have an "Advance RMA" system, where they send the replacement part in advance. "Unfortunately the Advance RMA system is down right now," he says. I joke to the tech guy "You must have had it on a Buffalo Linkstation, eh? hahaha". He doesn't laugh, and tells me to call back periodically until the Advance RMA system comes up. More awesomeness, Buffalo.

3 days later I call again (3rd time) and the "Advance RMA" system is still down. But this time they offer to send me an email when it comes back up. But now the tech tells me I will have to pay a $30 "fee" for the Advance RMA. "Yeah right, If it ever comes back up" I say to myself. Yet more awesomeness, buffalo.

So that's where I'm at. Buffalo has effectively found a way to hold my data hostage for $30. I can either send my old LS420 in, lose 3TB of data, and get a free replacement sometime in the future, or I can pay $30 and get a replacement LS420 in advance, transfer the data, and send the old one back. That is, if the Advance RMA system ever comes back up.

Thanks so much for the awesome service Buffalo!

I wanted to like the LS420. I ordered the 6TB version planning to run it in a RAID-1 configuration to replace my 1TB Linkstation Live, which was nearing capacity. I should have taken it as a sign when I couldn't even use the NAS right out of the box because I had to wait for it to format the RAID array, which took 24 hours! Then began the long processes of copy my ~1TB of data from the old NAS to the new one, and throughput wasn't anywhere near the 80MB/s they advertise (even on a gigabit switch). But I finally had everything copied, my Windows drive and Linux mount points updated, and everything seemed okay.

But after three weeks, I've decided to return the LS420 and can no longer recommend it. 9 out of 10 times when I tried to copy files to it, the NAS would just crash (dropped off the network, or hanging altogether) The bittorrent client would also crash and hang the unit, resetting all the configuration back to the factory default. I tried contacting Buffalo tech support via e-mail and also started some threads on their support forums and after 5 days still hadn't received a single reply (other than a boilerplate "we received your inquiry and will be in touch")!

This was very disappointing as I've been very happy with my Buffalo equipment in the past (multiple routers and NASes going back to 2006) but I can't have a NAS be as unreliable as the LS420 has been right out of the box. So it's going back and I'm going to try the Synology DS214 instead.

I have four NAS systems of varying sizes from Buffalo. While none of them is incredibly fast, they all seem reliable and get the job of storing "my stuff" done. I have the 6TB device in a RAID 0 array where I get the entire 6TB of space, at least what is left over after formatting (5,967,515,222,016 bytes or 5.42TB). The back up software is merely adequate but there are third party products that are much better. I use Shadow Protect as it allows me to easily find and restore a single file or make a complete system restore without regard to the design of the original system. Shadow Protect does this by creating a single file for each back up or incremental back up. This allows you to manage your back ups so you can recover the space used by deleting those back ups that are now redundant.

The Buffalo LinkStation is basically a small computer hanging on your network, that has a pair of 3TB drives, that can be shared across your network.

DLNA Certified. While I don't use this feature, the Buffalo shows up on my network attached entertainment system so I can share stored movies and pictures. I prefer to use the Apple TV for this purpose as the interface is intuitive and it can access anything on my network through iTunes.
