After reading many reviews that were mentioning IPS Glow, Backlight Bleed, Ghosting, Artifacts, and things of that nature, I was a bit concerned. I can deal with IPS Glow and Backlight Bleed, however ghosting would be a firm no purchase for me. Coming from a 1ms TN monitor, I was also worried that moving to a slower 4ms response time would introduce ghosting. Even though I was quite worried about upgrading, I decided to buy the monitor anyway.
To make a long story short, this monitor is purely outstanding in every possible way.
My worries about ghosting, artifacts, IPS Glow, IPS Bleed, and Dead Pixels were squashed and nonexistent. The model I received had no issues with Bleed or Glow. Even on 100% brightness, the Glow and Bleed simply didn't exist like some of the photos show here on Amazon. Maybe I got lucky, but I consider this a huge success.
As for Dead Pixels and Artifacts, there were no dead pixels or artifacts whenever I ran multiple tests through the monitor.
- IPS Glow? No issues
- IPS Backlight Bleeding? No issues
- Ghosting? No issues
- Color Banding? No Issues
- Flickering? No issues
None of the issues were present at the monitor's standard refresh rate of 144hz, or when overclocked to 165hz.
The colors of this monitor are fantastic, the viewing angles are fantastic, and the ghosting is not an issue with this monitor.
The difference between a 1080 60hz monitor and a 1440p 144hz/165hz monitor is incredible. Gaming at 1440p, the picture quality is sharp and colorful. For instance, in Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V, I find myself easily seeing enemies across the map that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to see with my 1080p monitor. Everything is so sharp and you can see so far, that it helps you play better. Now this monitor isn't going to make you aim better or be a better player, but the extra clarity of the 1440p resolution is a huge difference.
Coming from a 60hz monitor, the 144hz monitor also provides a smoothness and clarity that is definitely noticeable instantly, more so than the resolution jump. I find that huge jump in refresh rate helps me track enemy movement and maintain a direct continuous view without the enemy being easily lost. I used to find that on my 60hz panel, I would have trouble focusing on the enemy since they sort of got lost in the echo during a battle, but 144hz has fixed that issue as it tightens up and clarifies my view.
G-sync is fantastic and brilliant. This is not a G-sync compatible monitor which contains no G-sync module, this is a real G-sync monitor that contains a hardware module and is an official G-sync monitor that is validated by Nvidia. Since this is a G-sync Module monitor, you will not get screen tearing if your FPS hovers within the 1-144fps range. If overclocked to 165hz, you will then get G-sync coverage up to 165hz too. G-sync is in my opinion, worth the price and I love it so much. No issues with G-sync, and it makes my games incredibly smooth and tear free, even at less than 60fps. I find it incredibly hard to game on any other monitor that isn't 1440p 144hz with G-sync.
As for the monitor itself, the black finish, while a standard in the industry, is still nice as always. The monitor also comes with a joystick on the back of the panel to control the settings menu, which is a godsend. I wish many more companies would include a joystick for quick and easy settings menu navigation as it gets painful hitting different buttons and trying to remember how to navigate the menus only to hit the wrong buttons every time.
Last but not least, while sort of a gimmick, inclusion of a crosshair/dot, and a stopwatch timer is a very neat idea I wish more monitors had as well. This monitor also has a built in FPS counter which is great as well. I use that all the time. Unfortunately you can't use more than 1 of these overlays at a time, but the addition of these overlays is quite an amazing feature that I feel it underrated. It just adds more bang for your buck and is actually implemented quite well.
Overall, this is the best monitor I have ever used and I do not regret spending $650 on this. Worth every penny I paid.
Absolutely stellar and flawless product
This is the first monitor I've owned that uses a joystick controller to navigate its settings, and it was intuitive and easy to use from the get-go. Gaming on it is a wonderfully smooth experience and the handy built-in FPS counter that you can toggle in the monitor's settings helps me dial in the right settings for my games to keep it that way. The monitor was a breeze to set up - my computer instantly recognized it as a G-Sync display from the get-go and I didn't have to jump through any hoops to get the smooth, high refresh rates going.
The picture quality is bright and beautiful and it's a joy to watch and edit videos on as well. 1 year later and I've had no dead pixels or panel issues.
Here's where I think it has some drawbacks:
The response time is slower than you'll get from gaming-oriented TN panels. Even at high frame rates, when I play Overwatch and spin my character really fast, there's noticeable blurring. This will hurt you if you are a competitive FPS player, frequently rotating your screen quickly. It's not an issue for pretty much any other type of game however, so unless competitive FPS is your primary focus, all the other benefits of an IPS panel will heavily outclass TN.
They could have cut costs by not including the speakers. I have yet to meet a single person in real life or online that depends upon their monitor for computer sound. This is especially true for gamers with some disposable income (like those who would spend $700 on a display) - they're also going to have a better sound system than 2-watt speakers.
The picture quality is good, but not top-of-the-line. Look elsewhere if your primary goal is to edit high-res photos. For a gaming-focused 1440p monitor, however, it's still excellent (there are professional reviewers with actual measurements out there that will back this claim).
Overall, I'm exceptionally happy with this product after a year and give it an easy 5-star rating. I would heartily recommend this to any gamers with a strong enough GPU to run games fast at 1440p. Unlike monitors with TN panels, it also doubles as an excellent daily monitor for whatever else you'd use your computer for. Great work, ASUS!
Top reviews from other countries
This particular monitor seemed to garner nearly universal praise and had the base feature set I wanted - an IPS panel, 120+Hz, 2K - so I threw caution to the wind and bought it. Boy am I glad I did. Physically (note I am referring to the panel, not including the bezel) it's actually almost the same size as my old 24inchers, maybe half a cm taller and a handful wider. Makes sense despite the 3" increase, we are also shifting from 16:10 to to 16:9 so it's a bit squatter and a bit wider aspect-wise. The panel itself is made by AU Optronics whom you've probably never heard of, but they do yeoman work in the ODM and embedded manufacturing space, and this panel is something that they should be proud of. The pixel density is sublime. At desktop viewing distances I honestly cannot see pixel edges on things like browsing, text reading, etc. We'll come to gaming in a bit. Whites are bright and crisp - too bright by default as monitors so often are but if you don't have your own colorometer/calibration tools googling will get you some good basic settings to start with that are better than OOB. There is a little bit of light-bleed at the edges but it's not terrible. The two bottom corners seem to suffer from that the worst. Worse than my 2410, but I'm nitpicking a bit - as one should for a $1K display. That said if you're in-game or anything full screen that isn't very dark or black you won't see it there.
Gaming has been a real pleasure on this new display. New machine specs are, in short and without mentioning exact brands: i7 8700, GTX1080ti and 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4. Since I have an nVidia card I have been able to take advantage of GSync, which is their propriety adaptive frame syncing technology to prevent screen tearing without the drawbacks of Vsync. The monitor comes by default set to 150Hz at its top end and requires you to go through its menus to up it to the full 165Hz which I haven't bothered doing as of yet I will admit. This machine is beefy enough that in many games not only can I max out whatever in-game settings there are, but I can also super-sample - i.e. the game will render at 4K and the videocard downscales it to the 2K native resolution of the display. Think of it like a very expensive form of anti-aliasing (although traditional AA tech is still used in conjunction). I wish I could show you what some of this stuff looks like. Ni No Kuni 2 looks like every frame was hand drawn just for me. Assassin's Creed Origins, I can virtually feel the desert heat coming through the screen. When you have this much power at your disposal having a monitor that can do it justice is without question a capital Must Have.
The only thing I can think of to ding this monitor for is the dearth of inputs. One DP and one HDMI and that's it (and token USB3 hub functionality). I've been spoiled by my Dell monitors having half a dozen inputs tucked away which came in handy when I used to run my PS3, Xbox and Wii all through the 2410 along with my PC.
I 100% recommend this monitor to anyone that wants a fantastic display to go with a high-end gaming rig for a tolerable price. If you've got the pockets you may want to consider Asus's similar displays that are larger, 4K and even curved but be warned the price jump up is steep.
Side Note: There is an Acer-branded monitor that has the exact same AU Optronics panel in it that costs a bit less at the cost of losing some features (IIRC it doesn't have the GSync hardware) so if you're on more of a budget google around a bit and I'm sure you'll find it. A worthy alternative.
As my old monitor was hooked up through DVI-D, I purchased a DisplayPort cable in advance. I bought Amazon's own DisplayPort cable v1.2 (AmazonBasics DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable - 0.9 m) as a back up. I had read that the monitor does in fact come with a cable, but the quality of it wasn't great. You do actually get a HDMI cable in the box too, but I am not sure what version it is. I would presume that since the monitor runs natively at 144hz with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, it will be fit for purpose.
The monitor arrives very well packaged. My order came through DPD, and the external box was slightly damaged. Thankfully, the screen itself was very well protected internally, and hadn't suffered any damage.
After setting everything up, I configured the screen to perform at its best. I used this guide: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/asus-pg279q-rog-swift-27-inch-165hz-monitor,review-33467-3.html. It looks absolutely beautiful, especially when compared to my old 144hz TN monitor. You'll want to make sure you change the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor through the Windows settings (right click on desktop, and select display settings).
To test the monitor, I played a bit of Battlefield 1. It absolutely blew me away. I used the recommended settings as per GeForce Experience. The game ran as smooth as butter, and the monitor's standby light glowing red informed me that G-SYNC had kicked in. I didn't suffer any motion blur or tearing. I jumped onto Overwatch next, and I could see a vast improvement there too. Everything was much more vibrant and sharp. I was definitely impressed.
As you may have already read, this monitor is known for suffering from awful backlight bleed and dead pixels, so I ran a few tests, and it turns out I was very lucky. The backlight bleed is almost non-existent. There is a slight glow in the top right corner, but it's completely unnoticeable during normal use. I do, however, have a dead pixel in the top right of the monitor. It's far enough toward the edge of the monitor to not cause me any annoyance, and can only really be seen when looking at a white background, or other light colours.
I am incredibly impressed with this monitor, and I've only been using it for a day. It does everything I need it to, and more. This premium quality comes at a price, but I would say that the price is justified. Here are my pros and cons for the monitor:
Pros:
- The monitor makes modern games look incredible. It's hard to put into words how beautiful everything looks, and thanks to the 144hz refresh rate and G-SYNC, screen tearing is a non-issue.
- The monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable, HDMI cable, Euro kettle lead, UK kettle lead, and a cable to allow you to use the USB ports of the monitor.
- As this is an IPS panel, you can see the screen clearly from any angle without any discolouration.
- Even taking into account the eye-watering cost, the monitor is worth every penny.
- The buttons on the side of the monitor are easy to use. Activating the turbo mode to increase the refresh rate to 165hz is easy, but absolutely not necessary.
Cons:
- Backlight bleed and dead pixels are an issue. I got lucky, and only had the one dead pixel, and minimal backlight bleed. For the price you pay, I would like to think that quality control should be considerably better.
A few tips:
- Make sure you change the refresh rate of the monitor to 144hz. To do this, right click on your desktop, select Display settings, Display adapter properties, select the Monitor tab, then change the drop down menu to 144hz (I used Windows 10, but the process on Windows 7 is very similar). If the refresh rate is locked to 60hz, ensure you are using either a HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- If you plan on sending the monitor back until you receive one with no backlight bleed or dead pixels, note that Amazon will allow you one exchange before insisting you instead take a refund. This information was provided to me by an Amazon representative over live chat before I purchased the product, but your mileage may vary depending on who you speak to, and how assertive and persistent you are.
- You can check that G-SYNC is working by the colour of the standby light on the bottom right corner of the monitor. If it's red, it means that G-SYNC is enabled. Note that G-SYNC only works with NVIDIA cards, and unless your card is a GTX 960 or above, I wouldn't really recommend buying this monitor. Another way to test if G-SYNC is working is to open NVIDIA Control Panel, click on Change resolution, then select Display at the top, and tick G-SYNC Indicator. Every time you open a game, a notification will appear on the left to let you know that G-SYNC is enabled.
- Make sure that your PC can handle 1440p at a high enough refresh rate, or you won't get the most out of this monitor. I am using a GTX 1080Ti, and an Intel i7 7700k, and I am consistently blown away by the image quality.
In summary, if you have a PC that's capable of 1440p at high enough settings, this monitor is the way forward. The upgrade from a 1080p TN panel is incredible, and is truly something that you need to see to believe. Be warned that your monitor will likely suffer from backlight bleed or dead pixels. If this doesn't bother you, or you have the time and patience to return/refund until you receive the perfect product, then go ahead. You won't regret it.
