Worth every penny to make your computer twice as fast...
Although my professional career is in the field of Information Technology and my position in this field is about as high up the ladder as it can get, I enjoy working hands on and this review is intended for the home PC users because IT professionals know (or should know) everything there is to know about SSD drives and they do not need my review. So this review, will reflect my experience with the Samsung solid state drives while I will attempt to explain why you should pay the extra money and get this drive. The attached video shows the drive test first for this SSD and then for a conventional 2 TB HDD.If you are someone that needs a bigger hard drive or your hard drive died and you are contemplating if you should replace it or the whole computer or even if you are thinking of building your own computer, I can tell you with confidence that if you replace your mechanical hard drive with this Solid State Drive, you will be glad you spent a few extra dollars and your PC will be useful for a much longer period of time you thought it would. All this, provided that your operating system is Windows 7 or later or in any case your operating system is not close to the "end of life" date. The fact is that for the typical daily home use a computer that has a mid range processor with a solid state drive, will be faster than a computer that has the latest and greatest processor with a mechanical hard drive. To put it in a different way, if you have a computer with a mechanical hard drive and replace it with an SSD, you will most likely see double the speed or better.I have been using SSD drives for about 10 years now because that is when the pricing started to make sense and it still does (getting even better). I have mostly been using Samsung hard drives and the one that I currently have in my home PC is an Samsung 840 Pro that I purchased in 2014 and has been working flawlessly. I do application development and have made applications that are being used in production mode by multiple companies and departments so every time I need to upgrade my operating system, I buy a new SSD drive and start from scratch. This way, if something goes wrong, I can just plug in my previous SSD and be back in business until I figure out what I need to do to make things work with the upgrade. These Samsung drives are very reliable and have used them personally on all my PCs and laptops and even in the field at work with no problems and impressive performance. As a matter of fact, I told my technicians that if a laptop or desktop comes to their workbench for a hard drive replacement and it is not over 3 or 4 years old, they should replace the old hard drive with an SSD. The SSD upgrade breathes new life in those machines and users are amazed at the performance increase when they get their machines back. They are as happy as they would be if they would get a brand new computer. For personal use, I mostly work on my home office PC and I never shut it off unless I am cleaning it with compressed air once a year or I am on vacation. I recently ordered a new SSD (Samsung 860 EVO 1TB) to replace this one. This one has is now 3 years and 5 months old and has written a total of 16.83TB (this is only data written to the drive) while the drive reports that the "Power-on Hours" are 29040 which would be about 3.3 years of running. The "power on count" is 65 so this drive has only shut down 65 times in 3.5 years for brief periods of time. There are no errors and most importantly, the "wear leveling count" that shows the life remaining is at 94 percent. In conclusion, if you want your computer's processor to be all it can be, you need to feed it with information as fast as possible and SSD's do that very efficiently. Now, although you will read in the specs that the drive can read at speeds over 500MB per second, in real life when you put an operating system on this drive, you will get much less than that (see attached video). Yet, it is lightning fast compared to a conventional hard drive even when that drive spins at 10000RPM and to get drives that spin that fast, you will come very close or even exceed the price of this SSD.

I have been using my desktop for over a month now with this SSD as the main drive, and I am incredibly pleased with its performance. Keep in mind, I came straight over from primarily using HDDs for my mass storage devices, thus the difference to me was more noticeable than for someone moving between SSDs (depending on their quality, of course.) For those who are more technically inclined or interested, I will paste benchmark data for the drive's performance at the end of the review.

The design of the drive is very sleek and stylish. It boasts a smooth, polished, black exterior to house the powerful internals. You see what you expect out of an SSD: a lot of performance using a very small amount of space. I was a little bummed when I had to install it out of view as it was quite pleasant to look at.

Installation is simple just like any other SATA drive; plug it into your motherboard and power supply, and you'll be smooth sailing from there.

I'll discuss performance in terms of what's visibly noticeable, and following the conclusion, as aforementioned I will post benchmark results. From the moment I power on, to when I reach the login screen is only a span of about ten seconds or so (possibly slightly less); this is honestly a very quick process. If I didn't have a password lock, I would obviously boot into my system much quicker without having to input the keystrokes for the password. After I log in, I am instantly able to begin opening programs, and they load quickly. Anything from Firefox or Chrome, my large Steam library, or large movie files. I have not attempted to utilize any hungry video/photo editing programs, but you can rest assured that your loading times with those would be low as well. Furthermore, I play very high performing games such as Skyrim with high-res texture mods, Battlefield 3, and Anno 2070 to name a few.

When considering this SSD for purchase, keep in mind the cost per GB when thinking about what size of SSD to get. Of course, if you just want to boot your OS quickly and some important high performance programs, you are likely better off with a smaller SSD with a larger HDD to store other files. In my case, I've installed the OS, all of my programs, and games to the SSD, while having a couple of other much larger HDDs to store the large movie files, music libraries, etc. Keep in mind, I don't install all of my games simultaneously to allow more room for other purposes. I purchased this SSD during a sale, thus granting me a better value per GB of space on this 256gb drive. If budgeting is important, considering waiting for a big sale as an option. Should money not be a concern, Samsung will be releasing high performance 1TB SSDs to the market for a much higher price point, but you will be able to get HDD storage sizes with the incredible speeds of an SSD.

In summary, purchasing this SSD will not disappoint you or your wallet. You get a nicely designed product with stellar performance at a great price point, especially during a good sale. If you're coming from primarily using HDDs, you will be blown away by the colossal difference in speeds. In most cases, price will be the major deciding factor between what size of SSD to purchase. With this particular drive size, it would behoove you to consider using it in tandem with a HDD of a much larger storage capacity.

Pros:
-Amazing, noticeable performance, especially if coming from HDD usage
-Stylish design
-Great value per GB, especially if purchased during a sale

Cons:
None encountered

The leap in technology that the latest SSD's provide is the most exciting upgrade for a PC in years. Rarely has an upgrade made such a dramatic change in performance. These new SSD's truly represent a quantum leap in computer technology. And now that the price is less than $1/GB, the upgrade is a no-brainer. I highly recommend upgrading to an SSD if you are still on a HDD. The quick boot and super fast load of applications is amazing.

I moved my old Samsung 830 256GB to my laptop and bought a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB for my desktop. It was very simple to install and make sure to have AHCI enabled in the BIOS so you can see the true speed of the SSD. Make sure you flash your Motherboard BIOS first before you install this drive. I was getting half the advertised read/write speeds but once I flashed my motherboard BIOS, it was all good. I never get to see the entire Windows boot animation before it makes it to desktop. Windows 7 starts in ~10 seconds & shuts down in less than half that time. Everything opens immediately and games load fast and run great.

Samsung has updated Samsung Magician to version 4.0. It has a much prettier and friendly interface plus pre-set OS optimization profiles to choose from. It is a great tool to update the firmware of your SSD, optimize your OS and perform routine maintenance. I have nothing but good things to say about this SSD, and it is worth the price. The 840 Pro is very quick at loading the maps in BF3 and other games that have huge maps. The warranty is great with any SSD from Samsung and this one has a 5 year warranty. I will continue to buy SSDs from Samsung as they are the most innovative and convenient SSDs I have come across.

Pros:

+ The controller in the SSD is made by Samsung itself
+ Fast Write and Read Speeds
+ Fast boot times
+ Programs/Games install blazing fast
+ Constant firmware updates
+ Great for MP games that have huge maps to load
+ Samsung Magician is awesome to tweak your OS

Cons:

- None

The Samsung 840 Pro is one of the best SSDs you can buy and since Samsung makes their own controllers for their SSDs, it automatically makes the 840 Pro the absolutely best SSD on the market. Samsung Magician is also a great little program that can help you tweak your OS and improve the performance of your SSD. It installation of Windows 7 was blazing fast with the 840 Pro and all the windows updates installed very quickly.

I use a lot of heavy applications such as Photoshop and After Effects and loading my work files that are over 2GB is super fast. Also, if you have you are annoyed when waiting for games to load or maps to load in MP, now you don't have to because everything opens and closes so quick that you don't even know if you even opened the program. Overall, the Samsung 840 Pro is one of my favorite SSDs in this market and I plan on getting a few more of these bad boys.

My full rig:

Case: Corsair 650D
GPU: Sapphire 2xHD7970 @ 1.2 GHz
CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K @ 4.8 GHz
PSU: Corsair AX850, PSU
Ram: Kingston 16GB of RAM

Reviewed in Canada on June 15, 2014

My old computer stopped running because of a Mother board issue. I mainly fly flight Sims FSX and am starting to fly LM P3D flight sim. After reading a very good how to description on building the best computer for FSX I decided to build my own following the authors advice. The plan was to use an SSD for the main drive , an SSD just for the Sims and a larger HD for the Sceneries involved with the sims. This SSD installed very easily and has worked up to my expectations and the speeds of reboots during drive and program installation was very fast. The performance of the computer is matching what I was expecting and this is without any overclocking. After some more run time I plan to over clock. I highly recommend this drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Update For My Macbook

I purchased this for my Macbook Pro 2011 model. Replacing SDD with HDD is quite easy, I did this is just 5 minutes. But my plan was to replace old HDD with SDD and then takeout my optical drive (CD-Rom) and replace that with old HDD. So i purchased that tray also : http://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00HD7WBSM/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1 .

Replacing Optical drive was quite complicated than my expectation. But after going through some Youtube videos i get the idea how to remove this. You have to remove some extra screws for removing optical drive.

If you are looking for a new life for your Macbook, just go with this. Performance is amazing. Start / Shutdown time is around 15 seconds (that is another case usually i shut down my Macbook in a month or more). Open multiple applications without any delay. The only thing you will miss is that coloured loading logo of Mac :-)
