My hardware is a Pentium G3258, GTX 960, 16GB of DDR3 1600 RAM and a single SSD. Overclocking the Pentium was pretty easy in the UEFI. Took just a bit of exploring to figure out where Gigabyte placed the needed settings (there are two BIOS modes - one "Smart" and the other a traditional layout). Just changed the multiplier to 45, upped the voltage a bit and adjusted the LLC to high performance and its rock solid. It needed .25v less voltage than the ASUS for the same overclock settings. The memory defaults to 1333 Mhz, but its easy to change it to the rated 1600 Mhz by using an XMP profile.
As far as performance goes its a great board. I'm mainly playing World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor right now and I'm actually getting 2-3 FPS more using the exact same hardware and drivers as the ASUS Z97-A. Its just enough to keep the game nailed at 60 FPS everywhere on Ultra settings.
All in all I'm really pleased with the GA-Z97X-UD5H. It just works a bit better than the well regarded ASUS Z97-A. A little better overclocking experience and slightly higher gaming performance. It basically seems to have the qualities of a high performance motherboard at a mid range price.
Sound quality on the board is very solid and can save you from feeling the need to buy additional card.
The video quality of this board is also more than sufficient for non-gaming purposes.
The motherboard is well labeled and the user manual is well written and complete.
Has a more old school looking BIOS to go along with the more graphical one brought on by EUFI. There is a ton of tweaking one can do if they are inclined to do so.
Lots of SATA connectors (6 Intel, 2 Marvell) and 2 chipsets for RAID (Intel & Marvell). Also has a SATA Express and the very new M.2. One caveat to note is SATA connectors 4 & 5, SATA Express and M2 can only be used one at a time.
Plenty of support for USB 3.0 and 2.0.
CONS:
If you use this board in conjunction with a PCI Express 16x graphics card, like I am doing, you will find many of the SATA and related connectors are location directly under the graphics card. It is not a huge deal if you do not plan on plugging and unplugging the connectors much after your initial build but it will definitely not be convenient if you do.
I have read the Killer E2201 software for Windows 8 has a memory leak issue so you may want to look into it before buying. This board has an alternate Ethernet port though.
CONCLUSION:
Overall I have found this to be a very solid board for my build. It worked upon initial boot and I have had no issues with it. Gigabyte continues to earn my business.
I bought the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H motherboard to pair up with an Intel i7-4790K CPU. I read an earlier review claiming the i7-4790K did not work on this motherboard. The reviewer's shipped BIOS version was F5, while mine was F6. I used a cheap Celeron CPU to flash the board to the recommended F7 BIOS update. My i7-4790K is working fine on the F7 BIOS.
Why this board is nice:
- LGA 1150 socket (supports latest Intel CPUs)
- Intel Z97 Express Chipset (latest chipset as of this writing)
- SATA Express port
- M.2 connector (great for an Operating System SSD!)
- Choice between Killer(tm) E2200 and Intel gigabit network chips
- Dual RJ-45 Ethernet ports
- Sound card offering 115dB SNR with a built in headphone amp
- Dual BIOS for safer flashing/ reliability
Stuff it has that should be standard:
- Lots of USB 3.0 ports on the back w/ some USB 2.0 (no one cares about PS/2 ports)
- Electrically isolated audio components
- 2-Way SLI or 3-Way Crossfire support
- A CPU_OPT plug (use dual fans on your CPU cooler or a water cooler!)
- Onboard ICs and ESD filters for USB and LAN ports (help prevent electric board failure)
Note: You can only use one of the M.2, SATA Express, or SATA3 ports 4/5 at a time. If you need to check CPU compatibility, download the latest drivers, or utilities for this motherboard you can run a search on "Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H" and consult the manufacturer's support page.
The only thing which irked me with this motherboard was the point-and-click BIOS which can be switched to a more familiar classic mode. That said, the temperature and fan rpm readouts are a welcome touch. The board immediately recognized the XMP profile on my set of 2 X 8GB 2400MHz RAM (16GB total). I also plugged in my two SSDs, HDD, optical drive, audio card, GTX 670, etc., without a hitch. I have a feeling we are going to be friends. :)
