Very good White key lighting with several degrees of brightness (very little spill around the keycaps).
No software required to program lighting effects and macros.
You get a USB to PS/2 adapter in the box.
I do wish Zalman offered it with Black or Green switches for typists, with harder presses on keys to actuate. The Reds are a little too sensitive and mushy. The Space-Bar is quite good, though...better than the one on my CoolerMaster Masterkeys Pro L RGB, which has Brown switches.
The Z logo on the right side is pretty bright. At night, it's a little distracting, but you can put a semi-trasnparent sticker on it to dull its brightness.
For me, the macro keys are a little annoying, especially when reaching for the left CTRL key, but I've learned to live with it.
All in all, a very solid keyboard. Recommended!
The deciding factor for this particular keyboard was that it's OS-agnostic. You set up the keyboard via the keyboard itself. This is great for a Mac user because most companies can't be bothered to write drivers for Mac. It also means you can transport the KB to a different machine and not have to bother with software.
Ok, so I pulled the trigger and bought it.
Hit a snag in the beginning -- you need to be aware that this keyboard pulls a lot more power from the USB than your average chicklet-membrane KB. Did not work at all via the USB ports off my monitor. Then I plugged it into the back of the Mac and while it activated, I kept getting warnings from the Mac that it was pulling too much power and was being de-activated. There was already a device plugged into that USB bus and it seems this keyboard really needs most of the power on the bus. So be prepared and have an unused bus available on the computer, or you may need a powered USB hub. Fortunately I had another unused bus on the front of the cabinet and was in business.
Setup was quick and easy. It doesn't take long to understand. The multiple brightness settings are appreciated. I find the 2nd lowest setting is plenty with my normal lighting, and the lowest setting is perfect when I turn down the room lights. Exactly what I wanted. The other "groovy" lighting settings are fun demos but nothing I'm going to use on a regular basis. But I can see where a younger person might love the sensory stimulation of the special effects. Since each key has its own LED you can choose which keys illuminate, and this COULD be useful depending on what you're doing with the KB. Also, when holding down the function key, the current modifier keys light up brightly, which is nice. My only minor complaint is that the key functions are in a dark red and are really invisible when using low backlight settings in a dim room. Not that I need to see them that often, but I would suggest to increase the transparency of those logos so they light up better. I mean, the markings are there for a purpose. Being invisible would seem to run counter to that purpose.
The one thing I haven't mentioned until now is the the mechanical switches. As soon as I started using the KB I fell in love. I've been working with computers since the 1970's, everything from Micros to Mainframes, and this keyboard is very satisfying. This is the way keyboards used to be (and get off my lawn, lol). Seriously, the feel of a mechanical switch is so much better. A little louder than what you may be used to, but great for typing. Also, the mechanical switch returns you to a keyboard where the keycaps are super-easy to remove and replace without damage. This is great for cleaning, or playing practical jokes. But for Mac users it's very nice because you can switch the ALT and command keys to where they are "supposed to be", and you can reflect that change by going into KB settings in the Preferences. Finally, the keyboard is heavy enough and the rubber feet grippy enough so that the keyboard stays where you put it. I was forever nudging my Apple keyboard back into place. Ultra-thinness and ultra-lightweight are not always virtues.
In short, this keyboard combines the convenience of modern tech with the positive attributes of old-school keyboard design, and without tying you into whether or not drivers are available for your machine and OS. Bravo!
The response rate of this keyboard is excellent (much better than the old DAS keyboard that had key ordering issues). It has true N-key support (I tested it myself with a javascript app I wrote, and I could hit all the keys at once).
It has a bunch of fun lighting modes that I don't think I'll use. Note that if you want to use these, they will make your password obvious to anyone looking over your shoulder while you type it. You can turn off the funny lighting modes and just have normal backlighting, with 8 brightness settings.
I have a Filco keyboard with cherry browns, and the build quality on this one seems pretty much as good (at least as far as I can tell). It's quite heavy. I also have a Rosewill with cherry blues, and the build quality on that isn't nearly as good as Filco or this Zalman.
I believe this keyboard is a rebranded NKEYBOARD, which is a Korean brand.
If you double-tap numlock, the keyboard runs calc.
I clocked myself at 110 WPM with no errors on this keyboard, so it can handle at least that.
Most importantly, this keyboard has no drivers. There's no disk at all and no downloads on their website. That alone puts them miles ahead of Logitech.
