System Requirements and Compatibility

Heat Dissipation and Thermal ThrottlingNVMe SSDs are high performance drives that get hot while reading and writing data. This enclosure features slots for airflow on either side of the SSD as well as extruded aluminum fins for heat dissipation. Even with these features some SSDs may still enter a reduced performance state as they heat up, especially when under heavy load. This is most common with older NVMe SSDs with less efficient flash storage. Modern NVMe SSDs include built-in thermal protection and will slow down performance if they begin to get too hot. The threshold for this is generally above 60° C and closer to 70° C for many SSDs. Under heavy loads the enclosure can become hot to the touch, in our extended testing in a room temperature environment and allowing for the enclosure to passively dissipate heat, the samples did not reach temperatures above 50° C. |

This is for NVME drives only, no SATA SSDs, but then again, who wants to use the slower SATA SSD's anyway, right?
This unit comes with extra rubber stops that take the place of the SSD screw to hold the drive in place on the board so if you lose one or wear it out, you got backups.
Now I will say, that if you use the drive for large transfers that run 5 minutes or longer, the enclosure does heat up quite a bit and may reduce the life of some SSDs over time. How much the SSD heats up is directly proportional to the model SSD and it's controller chip used including the controller interface on this Plugable Enclosure so it is a combination of several things that cause heating. I used Samsung SM961, PM981 and several different Toshiba X3 & X5 drives. The Toshiba X3 heated up very fast and hot to the point that the enclosure was too hot to hold more than a few seconds. The Toshiba X5 & the Samsung SM961/PM981 heated up as well, but took 5 to 8 minutes of constant writing before the drive got hot to touch, 107 degrees as measured with my laser thermometer where as the Toshiba X3 heated up to 118 degrees in the same time frame. So you can see that the heat generated by SSD's will vary. The Plugable enclosure is great for portability where you need to switch between different SSD's often. If you are using the same SSD all the time and do not have the need to switch between different drives, I would recommend an enclosure that has a larger heat-sink for better cooling.
I placed a large CPU heat-sink on top of this drive enclosure without any thermal pad and that drew 100% of the heat away from the enclosure to the point that I never felt the enclosure heat up, even after 60 minutes of constant writing. I then placed some smaller NVME heat-sinks on the drive using a thermal pad between the two and this allowed the drive to operate for about 10 minutes longer before heating up. I secured my heat-sink to the enclosure with some tie wraps. (See attached photos) It doesn't look great but keeps the enclosure much cooler. Heat is your enemy when it comes to electronics and these NVME drives do heat up quite a bit.
One thing I will note, this is the newer version of this Plugable Enclosure. Some YouTube videos show the older version which can open too easily. The new design locks into place and does not suffer from the older versions issue. The newer version shows (2) small white triangles pointing to each other with a black circle background. (See my photos for a picture of the new design). If it looks like this, you have the newer design.
Overall I love this enclosure as it does exactly what I need it to do. I rated it (5) stars even though it heats up because I believe this was designed for IT Professionals in mind who want to switch out drives quickly and easily and are not using the drives in the enclosure for long periods of time with heavy use.
Pros: Easy Swtiching of SSDs, No Tools Required, Push button release, Great for IT Professionals
Cons: Poor heat dissipation for constant or heavy use

Pros: Easy Swtiching of SSDs, No Tools Required, Push button release, Great for IT Professionals
Cons: Poor heat dissipation for constant or heavy use
The big draw for this enclosure for me was it is TRIM compatible. Most SSD enclosures, both 2.5" and M.2 NVMe, are not TRIM compatible. It also works well with Linux Mint out of the box but isn't TRIM compatible out of the box; a udev rule has to be created first (I'll add directions for that at the end of this review since the only ones I've found on the "interwebz" are incomplete).
Besides being Linux and TRIM compatible, the advantages include its light weight, compact size, ease of use, and reasonable price.
There is one serious disadvantage, though: cooling is less than stellar. Since it uses a sliding shell, it's necessary to put thermal pads directly onto the chips of the SSD. This fine if one is going to leave the SSD permanently installed and not be swapping them out in and out all the time like I am. I tried putting the thermal pads inside the shell but they hung up on the edges of the chips on the SSDs and peeled loose so I just don't bother with them.
Fortunately, the 512GB Samsung 970 Pros I use most of the time do not overheat when formatting and restoring images to them. I only write 37GB to them at any one time so overheating has not been a problem so far, even without the thermal pads (they get quite toasty, though, but not too hot to handle). If I were to write, say, around 100GB or more, I would want to leave the cover off so the chips can get some air.
I have formatted a couple of 8TB NVMe SSDs in this enclosure without any problems but I didn't dare try to populate one of them (the other is a spare) because I didn't want to risk BBQing them. Once formatted, I installed in the laptop and populated it from backups.
At a later date, I may try to find a one piece Thermal pad that is adhesive on one side only to fit inside the shell and bevel it at one end to see if it will allow the chips on an SSD to slide over the pad without hanging up.
Despite the cooling issue, I gave this five stars since it still works well for my intended purposes. Your "mileage" may vary.
Here are the directions for creating a udev rule to enable TRIM compatibility in Linux Mint, etc.
1. Verify the Vendor ID and Product ID.
Run lsusb in the terminal with the device plugged in. If you aren't sure which device in the list is your SSD, unplug it and run lsusb again and see which device disappeared. (Don't forget to unmount the filesystem before you unplug it.)
Every device has an ID value in the list. For example, the ID for this enclosure is “0bda:9210”. The Vendor ID is the first part and the Product ID is the second part. My enclosures have the Realtec chips in them.
2. Create a udev rule. In the terminal, copy and paste this line and hit Enter.
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/50-usb-ssd-trim.rules
Type in your password, then hit Enter again.
Copy and paste this rule into the text editor (all one line; the correct IDs for this enclosures has already been added):
ACTION=="add|change", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bda", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9210", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi_disk", ATTR{provisioning_mode}="unmap"
Pressing CTRL+O, then ENTER, then CTRL+X will save and close the file in Nano.
Now, the next time you plug in your device via USB, TRIM should work.
Edit: I got a chance to see how good the warranty from Plugable is and I'm happy to report that it is excellent. After about a year of use, one of my Plugable NVMe enclosures went belly up.I reached out to Plugable at https://plugable.com/products/usbc-nvme to make as warranty claim. They requested that I describe the problem and to do some diagnostics on the failed unit. After I did that, they immediately sent me a replacement that arrived in a timely manner. I didn't have to send back the dead one.
- Low profile and inconspicuous. Doesn't have any annoying text all over it. It's just a stick with an SSD in it.
- Relatively easy to set up and use, compared to other enclosures. No screws needed is a blessing.
- Works great when set up properly.
- Stays cool without the thermal pads.
Cons:
- Do NOT use the thermal pads. They use a sticky adhesive that WILL physically damage the SSD. Thermal pads for SSDs should use the non-sticky, slap-on type, not these gluey ones. Plus, memory likes to run a little warm. Staying too cool is not good for the SSD and will hurt longevity. The SSD will not overheat. When it gets to unsafe temperatures, it will slow down by itself, which is unlikely to occur in the first place. The enclosure is enough of a heatsink for the SSD. Throw the thermal pads out.
- While you're at it, throw the cables out. They're junk. My computer would hang with the enclosure plugged in and everything would get wonky with the included cables. Bought a different cable (Cable Matters USB-IF Certified 10 Gbps Gen 2 USB A to USB C Cable if anyone's wondering) and it works perfectly now, no disconnects or anything.
- While no screws are needed, it's still somewhat difficult to open it. It requires a good amount of force to slide it out, and when it slides out, it slingshots.
Overall, a very good SSD enclosure, as long as you throw out the thermal pads and cables. It would have been a lot better if they had simply not included them.

Also, I have tried different cloning software but have not been used.
So my best suggestion is if you need to extend your SSD size then the only option is to remove the old SSD in your laptop and put your new SSD then do the OS installation with activating original keys. Finally, install all your application by yourself.
