Now having said that, you can get this device to work in Windows 7. You can either A) Install the aforementioned MS Hotfix by finding it online from an alternate source to download and install, but BE SURE YOU read the fine print before installing it... as there are actually two different hotfixes (KB2990941 & KB3087873 with the second hotfix patching the first), or B) Use an NVMe driver from another manufacturer such as Intel or Samsung, who actually make drivers available on their website. If you force Windows to use these 3rd party drivers, then your Neutron will run just fine, perhaps a bit slower, but probably not. (We used the Samsung NVMe driver series 3.0 and 3.1 and the Neutron worked as expected)
We must say that Corsair's choice to NOT make available a Windows 7 driver for their NVMe products is quite disappointing. Creating a driver for NVMe is quite simple as it is primarily an interface driver. But even if you use a third party driver to run your Neutron, you won't be able to use it to boot the drive since the drivers are not keyed for the Corsair product. We couldn't even make a successful clone or system image recovery using a third party driver.
Now, since Corsair does not state ANYWHERE on their website or Amazon listing that this device is NOT compatible with Windows 7, they have failed to provide adequate information to the consumer about this device. They confirmed by phone that they ONLY support this device on Windows 10, so be ware.
Other than that, the Neutron is an amazing product. It holds its own against AIC's from Intel and others putting itself in the top class of currently available (Aug19) AIC NVMe's with the Intel Optane and older P series AIC's. You would be hard pressed to see any meaningful performance difference between the top contenders in most applications. Intel's cards and drives still have the best sustained writes we have seen from any retail device, but the Neutron doesn't disappoint.
We are giving this a 4 Star ONLY because Corsair, a great company, has fallen short on something that they really should not have. Making a Windows 7 Driver for their NVMe devices would take less than a week and a day. There is really no excuse, regardless of the age of Windows 7. Windows 7 still has >35% of the Market Share on desktops, and the Neutron is the most affordable performance based PCIe NVMe to replace aging OS disks on these (mostly) desktop systems.
I already have a pair of existing OCZ SATA SSDs. I have been super happy with them. I have been interested in the new M.2 SSDs but my motherboard doesn't support them. It is older but still works just fine for what I need it to do. The Corsair NX500 was a great middle ground for me; It allowed me to upgrade my system at a reasonable cost with few to no downsides.
The Corsair NX500 was easy to install. If you have ever installed a graphics card, you can install this HDD. Once installed, Windows 10 recognized the drive without issue. Once I made it my main boot drive, it was noticeably faster than my OCZ SATA SSDs and shaved 5-6 seconds off my boot time. While this seems trivial, its a significant improvement when your boot time is already 20-25 seconds. I noticed a similar improvement when booting up Overwatch and Fortnite.
Overall, I have no complaints with the Corsair NX500. It provided me with a solid upgrade option without having to essentially rebuild my system from scratch. It is noticeably faster than my existing SATA SSDs and competitively priced. Its a win-win scenario for me.
