I started with the ReadyNAS 212 2-bay device, and then moved to the larger ReadyNAS 214. I used camelcamelcamel.com to watch for the price on this device to come down and was able to get it for $365. I've seen it go lower since then.
I was able to put new drives in the 214, copy files from the FreeNAS and the 212 onto the new device, and then put the drives from the older devices into the ReadyNAS 214. When copying across my network, I was consistently getting around 70-80 MB/s transfer rates.
The 3GB drive I added took about 12+ hours to sync up on the ReadyNAS 214. Once it was done, total available space was increased. Netgear has a great calculator to figure out how much available space you have based on the types of drives you add to your storage device: http://rdconfigurator.netgear.com/raid/index.html.
The other thing I like about the ReadyNAS is that it's easy to set up users and restrict permissions to shares on the NAS device. I set up users with the same passwords they use on their local Windows workstations, and also set up authentication to be the same name as my local Windows "workgroup". This allowed users to access the NAS with the permissions I gave them (read or read/write) without having to remember a new username and password.
I haven't gotten into the apps much. I ran a Plex app on the ReadyNAS 212, but it honestly performed better on Plex clients using a Windows Plex Server and just having it pull the media files off of the ReadyNAS 214. I may try to set it up again on the ReadyNAS 214, but it's not a priority for me right now.
Since I've had this device, I've also gotten several updates to the ReadyNAS OS, so it appears that ReadyNAS is still invested in maintaining the platform.
Overall, a very good experience and I highly recommend the ReadyNAS 214 device.
That being said, the software side is... irksome. The web based management tool is slow and flaky, the Insights app fails to read the box half the time, and nothing is straightforward. Some tips from my experience:
- If you want to mount the NAS as a drive, you're looking for `//nas-name/data/`. It will ask for the admin name and password.
- Making a folder on this mounted drive doesn't make it show up in the web interface. You have to make it in the interface, then use the folder. Otherwise you won't be able to share it over SMB/HTTP/whatever.
- The web interface lets you install any .deb package as far as I can tell, so that gives you some options. What I used it for most was updating Plex -- MANUALLY -- because the system can't update it itself apparently despite offering it in its "app center".
- This box can stream like a madman, but it can't transcode. I, in my naivete, put some 4K movies on the Plex server, and brought the server to it's knees any time someone couldn't directly play it. Lesson learned: put 1080p rips alongside. I've seen it transcode one, maybe two 1080p streams without issues.
- Turn off the antivirus. Sounds like a bad idea, but when it runs, the box CRAWLS, and you can't configure a time to run it as far as I can tell. You're scanning on your PC anyways, right?
- Support is a joke. The forums are dead, and when you find an answer it's usually "we deprecated that" or "works for me, not an issue". Live support isn't much better, assuming you can get ahold of someone. Consider yourself on your own for this.
Like most Netgear things in my experience, this box has its issues, but the hardware underneath is solid and reliable. The design is sleek, the dual NICs are nice, four bays are a dream, and it runs super quiet in my entertainment center. The software is barely usable and the CPU is fairly weak, but if you're just using it as a set-and-forget file server it's a dream come true.

We use the NAS to run our Plex server, to easily synchronize photos from our Android phones, for computer backup, and a place directly scan documents to… more on each of these below. I’m currently running two HGST 6TB NAS drives in RAID1, but will soon be replacing them with four Toshiba N300 6TB NAS drives in RAID5.
PLEX/MEDIA SERVER
Our primary use of this unit for watching and recording OTA (i.e. antenna-sourced) TV with Plex via an HD HomeRun Extend. We watch TV and recordings with Amazon FireStick4k and on our phones. This NAS has adequate performance to record one show while watching another show live provided no transcoding is required, or it can record two shows simultaneously. This unit doesn’t have the capacity to live transcode, so look elsewhere if that is important to you. Load times are quick and there are no noticeable delays.
PHOTO SYNC
We each have Samsung phones, and use the ReadyCLOUD app to easily upload all new photos to our ReadyNAS. Provided the NAS is properly configured, you can synchronize from anywhere – a great way to keep backups of photos while travelling.
COMPUTER BACKUPS
I do manual backups of important files monthly – I know there are automated options, but I prefer to manually upload files. I save them to a restricted folder to prevent access by anyone else.
SCANNING DOCUMENTS
Our printer/scanner has the capability to scan to NAS. This is super convenient because the computer doesn’t even need to be on to make the scan. We have ours set to scan to a “scanned items” folder that is accessible from our computers and phones.
MISCELLANEOUS COMMENTS
Build quality is excellent – this thing is built like a tank. The backlit display is convenient and lets you know status changes if you aren’t logged into the ReadyNAS portal. I’m unsure of the power consumption but the power brick is rated for 84W peak (assuming HDDs are 10W each, this suggests that the NAS could use up to 44W under load?).
OVERALL
This is an excellent easy-to-setup media server and backup NAS. If you require live transcoding, look elsewhere, but if not, consider this unit.

I bought my first one of these in July 2019 and was really satisfied with the performance and usability. I got the second one in March 2020, and have been using the two as a pair of fault tolerant storage systems.
This is an excellent product for home use, and even thought the spec here says it can go up to 24 TB, it has been designed to take larger disks to accommodate more storage. According to the Readynas Hard Disk Compatibility list, it can take up to 4x16TB disks.
The two I have are configured with 4x4TB and 4x6TB drives respectively, and I've found the devices to be very easy to configure and very reliable.
I have also set them up to be Time Machines for my Macs and they work really well for that purpose. You can configure how much disk space you want to assign to the Time Machine Backups, and also configure both shared and private Time Machines.
Overall I'm really happy with the RN214s that I have

Perfetto in tutto!

Rapporto prezzo prestazioni eccellente.
Il venditore Dexx Computer ha risolto, con correttezza e onestà, un problema creato dal corriere. 5 stelle piene al suo operato.
