The Corsair AX860 is a high-quality, highly-efficiency 860 watt power supply that runs cool and quiet. There is also an AX860i model that allows power supply monitoring and control via Windows software. I regret that I did not buy the AX860i instead of the AX850. Visit the Corsair website for technical information about any of their power supplies. I did not find a PDF version of the AX860 user manual on their website. (Maybe I just didn't see it.)
I always use Corsair power supplies in my builds. I have previously used power supplies from their AX-series and their RM-series. Both are great power supplies. I believe the AX-series is considered to be their "flagship" model. An AX850 (an older model) that I installed in a gaming computer has operated flawlessly now for more than six years. Therefore, I went with a Corsair power supply for my new gaming computer.
I built my new computer with an ASUS Maximus XI Hero motherboard in a Corsair 330R case with an Intel i7 8700K (overclocking) processor, 16 GB of Corsair DDR4 memory, a Corsair AX860 power supply, and a Corsair H100i v2 CPU cooler. As it turned out, the 330R case was a very poor choice to use with the H100i v2 cooler, leaving insufficient clearances for the CPU power cables (which are braided and thick), the rear exhaust fan, the upper optical drive tray, and the CPU_FAN jacks on the motherboard.
The Corsair AX860 is an ATX power supply. Verify this is the proper power supply for your case.
The AX860 is one of the most efficient power supplies you can find, certified up to 92% efficient. The power supply is also very quiet, as its fan does not even spin-up until power supply load is approximately 60% (controlled by a temperature sensor).
I like that the cables for this power supply are “modular”: you can plug (and unplug) cables at the power supply so only the cables you need are plugged-in. This allows for very neat cable management.
The following cables are included with the AX860:
- 1 ATX motherboard power cable 24-pin (20+4)
- 2 EPS/ATX12 CPU power cables (4+4)
- 6 PCI-E 8-pin cables (4+4)
- 2 700mm long SATA power cables, with 4 SATA power connectors each
- 1 850 mm long SATA power cable, with 4 SATA power connectors
- 2 peripheral (MOLEX, 4-pin) power cables
- Floppy drive power cables (4-pin)
A Warning about Connecting CPU power:
In past builds, it always seemed impossible to incorrectly connect the CPU power cables into the CPU power sockets on the motherboard. The cables and the sockets were "keyed" to make improper connection impossible. While wiring-up my new motherboard, as an experiment I tried inserting the CPU power cables both ways (correctly and incorrectly). Much to my surprise, the connectors inserted into the socket both ways. Meaning: It is physically possible to connect CPU power incorrectly. So be very careful that you are inserting the CPU connectors in the correct orientation.
Suggest you read the motherboard's User Manual so you fully understand the manufacturer's directions for connecting CPU power. In the past, you might have only conneted to the 4-pin connector. However, if you do that, there may be too much power (watts) on those 2 pin-pairs, possibly causing damage from overheating. The more pin-pairs you use for CPU power, the lower the current (amps) per pin pair. I try to connect to both the 8-pin and the 4-pin CPU power connectors (which is what ASUS recommends for my motherboard for this build).
Required Power Supply Capacity (watts):
The required power-supply capacity (watts) will depend on the CPU, video card(s), storage drives (hard drives or solid state drives), and disk drives (blu ray or DVD) that you are using. For example, many high-end video cards specify you need at least a 500 watts power supply (just for the computer with one video card). To maximize energy efficiency and to minimize noise, I think it is best to have the power supply operate between 40 and 70 percent load. Therefore, I looked for a power supply that should remain under 70 percent capacity when the computer is at full load. Since this computer has only one video card, I chose the Corsair AX860 power supply. If you are going to run two video cards, the AX1200 (1200 watt) power supply might be the appropriate choice.
My system is overclocked to the max, and this psu has no issues powering everything without any trouble. The fan is super quiet (hell, it barely turns most of the time).
I was even able to turn down the voltages on my cpu and gpu slightly, as the power going to them is now cleaner and more stable. I don't have to compensate for Vdroop anymore, like I did with my OCZ psu (which died 1 day after the 1 yr warranty was up)
That leads me to another thing, the warranty. It's 7 YEARS!
That alone should tell you what kind of build quality this psu is.
Do you remember the PC you were running 7 years ago? yea..
So they are pretty much saying "It'll never die within the period that you will likely use it"
All I know, is that if you buy this PSU, you won't be disappointed.
Arrived well packaged inside a cotton sleeve with a nylon box-bag for the cables, in a padded outer box.
As other comments have attested, the cables *look* cheap. Whether or not they are poorly made is immaterial. The perception of quality fails. For a power-supply in this price-range, cables should look like they belong in the same box.
I've only been using it for a few days so far but I'll update this if I get any problems.
N.B. For this build I used an anti-static wristband connected to the ground pin of a verified socket before handling any components, including the PSU. I verified the socket using a Belkin surge-protector which comes with a warning light if ground is not connected. I had no problems with any of my components and I'm extremely thankful that I bothered to take the proper precautions.
