When you take the Seagate NAS out of the box, it gives you a BIG fold-out sheet of documentation that tells you little more than to plug it in and turn it on, then access it via your browser. But it tells you that in a whole bunch of languages, so that following even that simple set of instructions is annoying. That's fine, it does a software update, and firmware update, then prompts you to setup a user and password. Then it dumps you in it's os, and you are very much on your own.
By default, the NAS is setup with a redundant raid, such that for 2 2TB drives, you get access to 2TB of storage, but it is redundant so that if one drive fails your data is safe. It also comes setup with a volume supposidly accessible from the network as a share. I eventually got this to work, and was able to access it from other machines, but it wasn't intuitive and took some doing. Quite frankly, I think the whole out of the box setup experience is lacking relative to other similar NAS's. They did make at least some effort to help with that by providing a few (extremely short) tutorial videos on how to do the very simplest things, but even these felt kind of half-baked. But figuring out how to set it up for streaming or sharing or backups, or any of the other more advanced features are not well explained, and amazingly there is no troubleshooting section in their online user's guide(!).
I can't recommend this NAS. I would choose an Asutor every time before this drive. The Asutor is much more intuitive, much more expandable, has many more features, and is better documented.
