I have had problems with NAS units in the past and therefore I was a little nervous about buying this one but I needed to replace the capacity that had been supplied by my WHS. It installed easily on my home lan and I plan to add a second one after I save up a bit, Straight forward to use.and fast.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
So far I'm not impressed by this NAS. This is actually the 4th NAS that I've owned. I've owned a Hammer, an Asutor, and a Time Capsule. NAS's are great because you can use them for different things like backups, storage, media streaming, itunes server, and lots more. But setting it up is the key.

When you take the Seagate NAS out of the box, it gives you a BIG fold-out sheet of documentation that tells you little more than to plug it in and turn it on, then access it via your browser. But it tells you that in a whole bunch of languages, so that following even that simple set of instructions is annoying. That's fine, it does a software update, and firmware update, then prompts you to setup a user and password. Then it dumps you in it's os, and you are very much on your own.

By default, the NAS is setup with a redundant raid, such that for 2 2TB drives, you get access to 2TB of storage, but it is redundant so that if one drive fails your data is safe. It also comes setup with a volume supposidly accessible from the network as a share. I eventually got this to work, and was able to access it from other machines, but it wasn't intuitive and took some doing. Quite frankly, I think the whole out of the box setup experience is lacking relative to other similar NAS's. They did make at least some effort to help with that by providing a few (extremely short) tutorial videos on how to do the very simplest things, but even these felt kind of half-baked. But figuring out how to set it up for streaming or sharing or backups, or any of the other more advanced features are not well explained, and amazingly there is no troubleshooting section in their online user's guide(!).

I can't recommend this NAS. I would choose an Asutor every time before this drive. The Asutor is much more intuitive, much more expandable, has many more features, and is better documented.

The manufacturer I think neglects this device, does not develop, and does not improve mobile applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid product from a maker who knows storage!

First off, I'm an IT guy! I've setup many different NAS devices from many makers. This one is one of the more simpler ones to setup. This PRO model has more RAM and a faster processor... With ANY network device, you need to know networking basics first! Best to setup new devices with newer other network devices of same make to eliminate compatibility (internal chipset) issues which will have communication issues and degradate speed! Example do not hook up to an old 10/100 hub! or an old router with 10/100 hub! Attach to a good solid name brand 1000baseT switch (not directly to your ISP router unless it is also name brand) By design this has a huge silent rear fan keeping everything cool and quiet. The NAS OS is very straight forward and reliable. Like I said easy setup via wizard BUT you still need to know networking basics! Solid product from a maker who knows storage! Sad to know this has been discontinued, I have over a dozen installed at various client sites...
