What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.

What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?

Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.

Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.

Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.

How do I set up my unlocked phone?

The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

Mostly Negative, but I love this phone...
THE PROBLEMS:I want to start this with the problems that I have been experiencing with this phone. I have had this phone for two months, I love this phone, but sometimes it annoys me. The biggest problem I have had with this phone is that the messaging feature is still glitchy with lollipop. I have the screen set to turn off after one minute. Here's what happens: I text someone, I set the phone down, the phone falls asleep, when I wake the phone up and get ready to text with the already open keyboard, it doesn't work. I can just tap the keys forever and nothing will show up on the phone. I contacted Motorola customer support about the problem and they weren't able to help me.The second problem I have noticed is that sometimes the proximity sensor will just stop working. This isn't a huge deal, I just restart the phone and the proximity sensor works again. This issue only shows up every so often, it has only happened two times thus far. The proximity sensor is also one of my favorite features of this phone. You pick it up and the phone lights up like it's happy to see you. I love that. The third problem I kind of expected. Everyone talked about how laggy this phone is. It really can be laggy at times, but for the price I paid, I'm not complaining. I experience the most lag when I am checking facebook or when I have too many internet pages open. This phone also has a bit of a hard time navigating google drive, but that might be because I have a ton of documents.****Oh, and I almost forgot the worst part... the microphone is towards the back of the phone(see photo)! The first few calls I made, everyone kept yelling that they couldn't hear me. I thought it was my service because I had just switched, but that wasn't it. I did some research online and found that a lot of people were making calls only to have someone say, "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Everyone online recommended to use headphones or to cup your hand on the bottom of the phone while you talk. I have actually found my own technique. I talk to the back of my phone and smoosh my ear on the phone so I can hear. I look like an idiot while I talk to the back side of my phone, but it works. Also make sure to hold your hand on the top of the phone so that the proximity sensor turns the phone screen on/off so you can hang up when done.THE POSITIVE:Since everyone lists positives in their review and I know that I come to the comments to read the negative, I'll just quickly bullet point some of my favorite features of this phone.- it ties with your google account to give you all access to email and what not-the front facing speaker makes for okay music listening-the notifications go off without turning on the screen, which is awesome for the battery-with a daily texting usage and no other functions such as youtube or constant internet browsing, I get 2 days of use without charge-the phone doesn't come preloaded with a bunch of junk apps-NUMBERONE, 1st place, top pick is the camera function. I deleted the camera app off the home screen because all you have to do to get to the camera is twist your wrist two times quickly and BOOM, your camera is ready to shoot.MY SET UP:One last thing, I just wanted to go into the plan that I have setup on this phone. I looked into every phone that plan there is and then I saw that Cricket Wireless had been taken over by AT&T. So I checked them out and I got myself set up with no hassle to Cricket WIreless. I enter my info online, Cricket said you're all set, they sent a sim, I inserted sim and I was done. I now pay $25 per month for Unlimited Talk, Text, and no data.

Much improved from last years model on every level whether it be the larger screen, autofocus camera, larger battery or upgraded CPU. I've been a journeyman looking for the best cell phone at a reasonable price point after issues with my iphone 6 shortly after launch, and finger pointing with carrier and vendor. I decided to buy an unlocked phone - and went through a number of options from Blu, to the One Plus One. I haven't been completely satisfied until my Moto E LTE arrived Friday, which I can say is an awesome offering at an extremely low price point.

I had previously used a 2014 Moto G as well, however had some performance issues and battery life was less than expected. I can happily say neither of those issues are present with the new Moto E. I use this device with AT&T and was able to simply call, provide the IMEI, and utilize my old LTE sim card to activate the service. On first reboot I did not receive LTE, the rep was able to assist in enabling the LTE service properly - this seems to be an issue of the past with AT&T and unlocked phones as the procedure was painless. LTE Performance seems pretty reasonable on par with the other two devices I tested - iPhone 6 and One Plus One - all receive roughly 30 to 32 Mbps at my current location.

The LTE model ships with the new Snapdragon 410, which is 64-bit, however the Android 5.02 version the device ships with is in fact the 32-bit offering. Performance seems to be much better than the older 400 which still ships in the LTE Moto G, and Non-LTE 2015 Moto E. I assume these are more power efficient as well because I seem to be getting about 8 to 9 hours of screen on time with the device.

The camera now features autofocus which I believe was not the case last year, however it is still limited to 5MP in 4:3 shots, and does not include a flash. Pictures in well lit rooms seem decent enough, don't expect this to replace a standalone camera however and you probably wont be disappointed.

After 52 minutes of screen on time this morning, and 2 hours of screen on time, I am at 88% battery still which is more than reasonable. I haven't had a full day of use for work yet but will update my review with full battery impressions once I have an idea of a full day use on a charge.

Call quality seems pretty good, I've only had 1 call with the integrated speaker, as I generally use a bluetooth headset with my calls.

The phone is a little smaller than I expected, but coming from larger handsets I actually welcome the ability to hold the phone and type text messages with the same hand in a trouble free fashion. 2 handed operation is more difficult to hide in work meetings.

I have not done much in the way of benchmarking but I did have a chance to run Antutu - i received 22,103 on my first run which is respectable but certainly not a chart topper. Daily performance seems very solid as I mentioned above however.

Overall I couldn't be happier so far with my new phone, it has all the things I was looking for - great battery life, extremely stable, and fairly compact after trying out some larger phones.

    Pros:
    Great Price Point
    Compact Design
    Snapdragon 410
LTE at a low cost and simple setup with AT&T
    Excellent Battery Life
Moto has great device support and ships with Android 5.02

    *** First day Impressions***
Quick back story, I am a long time Nexus user, until my Nexus 5 decided to fail. I picked up the 1st gen Moto E as a hold over until I could figure out my future phone options. I operate on Cricket wireless prepaid as I do not like contracts and contract subsidized phones. The Moto E 1st gen was a serviceable phone with a fresh Kitkat v4.4.2 install. The major downside of the 1st gen E was its' abysmal storage (4 GB). After OS partition, you are left with mere MBs for precious apps, and not many apps can be loaded to the microSD. With the announcement of the 2nd gen 2015 Moto E, I was excited, as it features 4G LTE, slightly larger screen (4.5"), increased storage to 8 GB, a peppier Snapdragon 400 quad core chip, and Android Lollipop v 5.0.2.

    After one day of use these are my impressions of the new and improved Moto E;

    Hardware:
A lot more responsive than the 1st gen Moto E. The quad core and Lollipop feel quick with opening apps, switching between apps, and general usage. I do not game at all on my smartphones, so I can not comment on that. As for texting, music playback via Bluetooth, and navigation, these tasks are easily handled by the Snapdragon 400. After Lollipop partition, you are left with nearly 3 GB of usable storage. I supplemented my Moto E with a 32 GB microSD card for media and apps that can be stored on external memory.

-Battery life is excellent much like the 1st gen Moto E. With 4G LTE data, general use, web browsing, texting, Instagram, etc the battery easily lasts the full day.

-Display is not much to write home about. Its slightly larger than the 1st gen Moto E, but only by 0.2" diagonally. A lot of reviewers will say the texts are blurred and that its tiny, but this is a testament to how spoiled we've become in the tech/smartphone sector. Coming from a larger Nexus 5 IPS 1080p screen, the 2nd gen Moto E is fine for me. Colors seem more vibrant in the Lollipop/material design compared to Kitkat v.4.4.2.

-Audio. The speaker quality seems much louder than the 1st gen Moto E. I do not have to max out my speaker volume if I'm using speakerphone or listening to a media clip. I found I had to adjust all my notification/alarm/media volumes to lower settings. Don't expect Dolby Digital theater quality here. Its a basic phone that fills the need for speaker volume.

-Camera. Very poor much like the 1st gen Moto E. You do get a 5 mp f/2.2 lens with focus (finally). Do not expect to get much of anything captured without sufficient ambient light, since the camera features no flash. The front facing VGA shooter is as bad as you'd expect. Quality is in line with 1st generation webcams. If you want a quick selfie for snapchat or something, it will suffice in well lit situations. Moto software allows very quick photo captures and "tap anywhere" on the screen to shoot.

    Closing comments:
Motorola has done a great job packaging proper hardware and software into a budget off contract smartphone. The combination of 4G LTE and Android Lollipop v5.0.2 do make it feel relevant in the hyper competitive smartphone market. Motorola's own software tweaks on top of Android Lollipop offer great enhancements as well, though I'm still getting used to them. Motorola migrate worked well for transferring my old contacts/texts/media from my 1st gen Moto E. Moto display seems alright with displaying notifications without full waking the screen. The large software enhancements come in Lollipop, where Google has completely revamped the design aesthetics of its' OS. A large plus for me is the all day (and then some) battery life. Coming from larger and more powerful smartphones and always seeking a charger halfway through my day, I love having no fear actually utilizing the Moto E 2nd gen during work/errands/adventures.
I highly recommend this phone for prepaid/off contract/casual phone users looking for a smooth phone experience that is well rounded and functional in 2015.

When my Samsung Galaxy S3 became dysfunctional, I looked around for an inexpensive alternative that would not chain me to a contract. The reviews praised this one. I have now had it for several months, taking it on a trip to France in the meantime. It is a fabulous replacement. A bit smaller than the S3, and the screen is not quite as sharp. Love the size and the way it fits in my pocket and hand. Screen difference is hardly noticeable. Little harder to type on because of smaller size. But what a fabulous phone for the price. Latest android. Fast. Solidly built. I use it as a phone, as a timer, for GPS, for email, limited web surfing, and other miscellaneous functions. Works like a charm. Don't use it for photos, other than quick reference photos. No contract means I can make better deals on carrier fees whenever I want. Really do love this phone. My wife's S3 just became dysfunctional with the same problem as I had. I am going to buy another Moto E. Did I say how much I love this phone?
