I was at a crossroads on whether I wanted to get a gaming laptop or build SFF. Once I saw what this case was capable of, I found my answer. I don't really travel enough to justify the cost of a high end gaming laptop and I wanted something capable of running games at high/max settings. Gaming laptops are nice but if you want to run full graphics you will easily spend 1500+ and it's not even upgrade-able.
This is actually a secondary build for me. My main rig is a monster with dual 780ti's. It's housed in a corsair 900D tower. The case weighs 41 lbs, empty. It was built for one purpose. Gaming at 4k with max settings. It's a thing of beauty, Gaben himself would be proud, but it nearly breaks my back to move it anywhere. Taking it to a friends house is simply not an option unless I was going to be there for several days at least. It's a daunting task without even considering the wires.
Back to the Raven case. I'm completely in love with it. It's aesthetically pleasing to look at. And it uses the space inside the case very efficiently. Installing everything was a breeze as well. Although I have tried a few different ways to manage the cables.I'm not going to lie it will test your cable management skills.
Airflow seems good. I'm using a low profile noctua cooler for the cpu and it idles in the mid 30s. Barely warmer than my watercooled i7 in the other build. Very impressive. The GPU runs at more than reasonable temps. When I ran 3D mark firestrike it barely broke 65 celsius. I could even overclock the thing. Needless to say airflow is exceptional inside the case.
Things to consider when buying this case. There are some extra costs that will go along with any build in this case. You will want to buy the SFX PSU from silverstone and a slot load disc drive. Yes,I would recommend spending the extra cash on a disc drive. You could spend less on an external, but the idea of this build was simplicity and adding in an external part takes away from that.
If you're gpu will use more than 170 watts TDP, you may want to opt for the 600 watt variant of the PSU. The one I chose was the 450 watt. For reference, I am running a GTX 760 currently. I'm waiting on EVGA to send me a confirmation for their step up program and I am upgrading the GPU to a 970. Funny enough the 970 is nearly as powerful as a 780ti and uses less power than a 760! Yay maxwell!
Back on topic, you will also want to get the short sleeve cable set for the silverstone PSU. The great thing about the PSU is that it is fully modular. Meaning you only attach the cables you need. This is crucial in a SFF build since space is a limiting factor.
Here is my build.
z97 mini itx motherboard from gigabyte
i5 4670k
8 gb hyperx kingston ram
EVGA GTX 760 SC (Soon to be a 970, hopefully)
Samsung 840 evo 250 gb SSD
Silverstone slot load dvd writer.
Silverstone tek SFX 450 watt PSU
This system is an absolute power house and is small enough to fit in a small duffle bag. It can't touch my other system, but it will still run any game at full graphics at 1080p. It will easily handle 1440p and probably some 4k once I get a 970 in it.
I may never build in a large tower again after this. I am truly impressed. Thanks Silver Stone!
First, the Amazon packaging was really disappointing. They basically put the Silverstone box within another box, and added one sheet of packing paper to absorb pressure during shipping. If Silverstone had not used packaging foam to secure the case, it probably would have come in pieces. Shame on you Amazon, you should know better when shipping ~$100 fragile items!
Anyways, back to the actual review. My first impression when unboxing was the same as any other Silverstone product. Quality. The case is beautiful, and pulling it out of the box and examining it was a real treat. Some might disagree with me when it comes to style, but I firmly believe that Silverstone has case design down to a science. It is simply a work of art, and the fact that the case only costs $85 is stunning. The accessories box was also filled with goodies, including rubber mounts for vertical case orientation, a secondary plastic logo piece to replace the original logo when the case is mounted vertically, and a 4 pin to 4pin/3pin fan splitter. That is what I call attention to detail. If they didn't include the splitter, I would have been SOL. They also included three magnetic fan filters, which I must say are excellent quality and add even more value to the package. Well played Silverstone.
Now, with all of that said, I unfortunately was let down when beginning the installation of hardware. The first thing I noticed was a lack of proper screws for specific components. Two were missing for the GPU securing accessory, and four were missing for the optional third fan. Now, let me first say that up until this point I have had nothing but positive things to say about Silverstone when it comes to attention-to-detail. I purchased an RV01 case about 5 years ago, and the accessories included were well above my expectations. I still have a bag of unique screws and gadgets from that case today. The fact that Silverstone dropped the ball on accessories for the RVZ01B was disappointing. This really shouldn't have been an issue, but I ended up salvaging old computer parts, and searching the house for replacement components. I even had to make a drive out to Home Depot to find some screws. I don't want to do that when I'm building a new PC. And it's not like including screws in the case is expensive. It was four screws for the extra fan! Really guys..
This brings me to my second gripe, which was the lack of a third fan. The case is designed for three fans, two for the GPU and one above the CPU, but they only included two. From a customer perspective, that's like including an air intake on the hood of a car but skimping on the supercharger. I get that they cost quite a bit, but the lack of an extra fan makes the package feel incomplete. Luckily, I had a spare Silverstone fan so I wasn't SOL here either.
Apart from those two issues, the installation process was fascinating. One point which must be mentioned is that it is a TIGHT FIT. Like, really tight. I had to reinstall components multiple times to get the correct orientation for wires/fans/parts/etc. Be prepared to brainstorm how to get everything fit correctly. Linus did a review on installation procedures for this case, and I highly recommend you watch that video before installing components yourself. When you do get all of it working though, and finally close the door, you will revel in its beauty. It just looks great, and the fact you can fit an R9 290x into this thing just seals the deal.
I love this case. And I hope Silverstone learns from the issues and potential bottlenecks from this production run. But I have to say, for a first legitimate attempt at solving the mini-itx power case, they hit the nail on the head.

The bad: cable management is tough with an ATX, I recommend going smaller. The "magnetic" dust filters dont actually stick to the side of the case...
The worst thing though is only HALF the front panel works; and for some reason I have a single blinding LED in the corner (refer to picture). The led strip, right side USB, and microphone jack DO NOT WORK properly.
I've doubled checked the cables and there is no damage to the pins or anything. Also, a damaged pin or cable would not explain why the left side works because they're all part of the same front panel unit. So now I have one working USB plug and half an LED strip.
I could sent it back for warranty, but that would mean rebuilding this computer in its tight frame.
