Best gaming laptop in the $1000 price range
    5 Stars
Best gaming laptop in the $1000 price range
I had been looking around for a while at many different gaming laptops, planning to get one for sure, but was really on the fence about which one to get. I looked at all of the MSi, Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sabre, etc. and to be honest, all these companies had great gaming laptops to offer for around the $1000 price point I was looking for. And I would hope that anyone looking for a gaming laptop in this price range would understand that companies are going to make compromises to reach that price range. All of the gaming laptops from all of these companies are great for this price range, and they all make their compromises in different areas of their laptops to reach that point. Ultimately though, most all of the other ones I looked at for this price were making their compromise in the the form of the GPU, stepping them down to the GTX 1050ti instead of the 1060 to try and cut costs. This was the only one that I found that still included the GTX 1060, and a 6gb one at that! No, it doesn't have the Aeroblade fans like some of the more expensive Predator line, and doesn't have a Thunderbolt port, but it does still have a USB-C 3.1, and the dual fans that it does have are still very good. I'll try to spare the more specific details on the specs on the laptop, as you can simply read those yourself on the main page here for the Helios 300, so I will move on to the concerns I had and what I think of the laptop so far now that I've had it for a few weeks and had plenty of time to run it through the mill. There was another reviewer on here that had purchased the Helios 300 as well, and in his review stated that once he got it, Acer did not have the current driver software update on their site for the GPU, so his GTX 1060 in it was useless at that time. He updated his review a few weeks later stating that Acer did finally update their driver software support to the most current version, but I was still concerned about this at the time of my purchase. Needless to say, my concerns about this were immediately alleviated once I got the laptop, as I opened the GeForce Experience program the laptop comes installed with and was easily able to update the driver software within the first 10 minutes of turning it on. Now to my second concern I had, which was heat and coolingI do plan to use this laptop for gaming, and although I don't plan on doing extremely heavy gaming on it, as I have a PS4, Xbox 360, 2 ps vitas, and a Nintendo Switch, all with plenty of games on them to which are my primary gaming platforms, there are just some games you cannot get on consoles, especially indie games that are offered on Steam, and this is my main use for this laptop, but I did want to see what this thing is capable of, so I purchased The Witcher 3 and Far Cry 4 to really test what it can do. I'll say, between those two games, and above all my other indie games and older, easier to run games that aren't near as taxing on the hardware, The Witcher 3 is the ultimate test to see what a system can do, as it runs it HARD, pushing the CPU and GPU to their limits as is, but it does run the game EXTREMELY well, keep in mind you HAVE to be plugged in to the power supply for these particular heavy running games to perform adequately, as if you try and unplug and run them solely on the battery power, both Witcher 3 and Far Cry 4 will instantly cut down to 9fps and are completely unplayable in that manner, and this is NOT something that can be changed, it is just the way the BIOS is set up. Trust me, I tried messing with all of the regular settings to which none of them changed this at all, the only way I found that you could possibly get those type of games to run at full 60+fps on the battery alone would be to go into the BIOS and turn up the voltage, but I DO NOT recommend even trying that, as it is just not worth potentially melting your computer just to do this, so settle on knowing you will need to be plugged in when playing PS4-era games. All of my other games, however that are xbox 360-era games, such as dark souls and payday 2, and ALL of my indie games, run a smooth 30-60+ fps in battery only mode. So, back to the heating and cooling, even though it doesn't have the Aeroblade 3D fans, the dual fans it does have work very well and are much quieter than I expected them to be, only really being noticeably audible when turned up to max speed. The rest of the time, they are barely a whisper. I want to note, that I HIGHLY recommend always running the PredatorSense application that comes built in to the laptop, as it is very simple and works great, giving you a very nice window that gives you a live feed of your individual CPU and GPU fan speeds, as well as current temperature/loading monitoring for both the CPU and GPU as well, and records all of that data on a second-by-second basis from the time you open the app to current. It also has very easy settings to use, have Auto, Max, and Custom fan speed controls, as well as having something called CoolBoost which I will get into in a moment. So, while running either The Witcher 3 or Far Cry 4, I noticed that after extended periods of play (1+ hours), on the auto setting and with CoolBoost off, CPU temp was staying around 90 Celsius, and 80 Celsius for the GPU, and there were short spikes that would last a few seconds at a time where the CPU would actually jump up to 97 Celsius, which was enough to concern me, so I tried messing with the settings more, and concluded that if you are going to play any heavy games that tax the hardware this much, I HIGHLY recommend that you turn CoolBoost ON, as once this was on, on the Auto fan setting, playing The Witcher 3 or Far Cry 4 for extended periods, it considerably helped to cut down these max temperatures, where now the CPU max was at 87 Celsius, and the GPU at 78 Celsius max. Much better. Now, as for all of my indie games and Xbox 360 era games, this ran considerably cooler, with Dark Souls pushing the CPU to 72 Celsius max, and GPU 61 Celsius max. So, in conclusion, cooling is definitely more than adequate for light to medium gaming, but to remain adequate cooling on heavy games, I recommend you always turn on CoolBoost first, but once you've done so, it is adequate. In conclusion, I am extremely happy with the performance of this laptop! It hits all of the right marks for someone like me who does do medium and some occasionally heavy gaming on it. As far as all other uses, for web browsing, video streaming and similar tasks, it is more than enough to easily perform well, with web browsing specifically being very fast. It may even be enough to say it is overpowered for such tasks, which is fine by me. The ISP screen is beautiful to say the least, with very good viewing angles, having a VERY slight loss in brightness at about 50+ degrees onward, but it is so slight it is still viewable. The keyboard is very solid, and the keys have good travel and resistance, not too much, not too little. The only qualm I might have regarding the keyboard is the fact that you only get one color on the back lighting for it, red, as I understand that may bother some people, but again for the price point, some compromises are to be expected, and the red backlighting really does not bother me, and actually has really good lighting, not being too overpowering but giving you enough light to be able to easily see all keys well. The touchpad is very good, having smart gesture capability, and the left and right clicking work well on it, as well as tapping the touchpad to click. Battery life overall is actually much better than I anticipated for all the hardware it has, being able to get upwards of 8 hours with light to medium use for surfing the web and doing other things, with gaming obviously draining it much quicker, but I've been able to get up to 2 hours on some games on just the battery alone without even trying to turn any of the settings down and actually having the screen brightness all the way up. The 256gb ssd that it comes with is blazing fast and I absolutely love it, but I do recommend you consider getting an additional hard drive for it as I did, as it does come with an extra 2.5" slot on the bottom to put an additional drive in it, which I ended up throwing my old 500gb PS4 hard drive in, which was an extremely easy thing to do since they made a simple door on the back that comes off after just removing one screw and is super easy to do yourself, just don't forget to make sure the hard drive you put in it is already formatted or empty, as I forgot to erase all my old PS4 data off the one I put in it, and ended up having to go into the Disk Management settings and delete all the partitions (save files essentially) one at a time before the computer would even recognize the hard drive, but once I deleted all of the partitions, it easily recognized it.In summary, I would definitely recommend this laptop for anyone that is looking for something similar to what I was looking for that wants to get the absolute most performance they can for a price point of $1099 and that isn't concerned too much about being bothered by having a laptop that looks like a gaming laptop.

I don't write a lot of reviews, and when I do I am fair. Example, I don't bash a product because of bad shipping or service. That being said:
This is the best laptop that I've purchased. It was made for my son who plays a lot of games but I'm seriously thinking of purchasing one for myself and selling my MacBook 15". It's that fast/smooth/nice and at this price, the power is astounding.

For comparison I ran this since by side with the new Dell 7577 gaming latop at the same price level. For starters, this laptop starts with 16gb of ram(vs 8 on the Dell) and an I7 7700HQ vs the I5 counterpart on the Dell. While both are quad core, the processer makes a noticable difference in benchmarks. If that's not enough, this laptop has the full GFX 1060 vs the scaled back Q model in the Dell(about 10% slower). Not only did this Laptop crush the Dell in every benchmark, it did the same for my late 2016 Macbook Pro 15" that retailed for more than 2.5 time the price.

    I'll itemize different areas:

CPU/GPU/RAM I7 7700HQ with full GFX1060 16gb of DDR4 Ram (10 of 10) - Can't beat this for the price. Pefect for most users and all but the most fussy gamers.

Display: (7 of 10) The reviews bash this display, but I find it superior to the Dell display and head and shoulders over the new 'premum' laptops at work. It's not as bright as somer others, and not as nice as my Macbook, but it's more than acceptable. Maybe in the darkest games, but It's more than enough for me. It's an IPC panel, and not noticable backlight bleeding like on the Dell. I rate it down because at 60hz you're only getting 60fps in games, but at this price point you can't expect more.

Keyboard: (9 of 10) Much perfer this keyboard to either the Dell or my Macbook. The feel is as close to perfect for my liking. My only complaint is that the backlight doens't appear to be adjustable... like on the Dell and MacBook Pro 15. It just feels right to me.

Sound: Sound is 'OK'. It's the weak point on this laptop. It's clearly better than the Dell, but it has no subwoofer(they had to cut somewhere). Having the speakers fire downward actually helps if the laptop is on a desk as the sound spreads to fill the room, but can be muffled if on on your lap. Still acceptable and not the worst that I've heard. Just a note:Sound not quite as good as the older Dell 7000's with subwoofer or My Macbook 15, which has one of the best sound I've heard on a laptop.

Ports: (7 of 10) It's got all that I need. SD card reader(though I'm not sure of the performance), USB 3, USB2 and HDMI. The Dell wins on this one a it has a Thunderbolt power and I head a faster card reader, but this is not going to influence my laptop purchase. this is accpetbale. (I Rate the newer macbooks at a 1/10 do to only having thunderbolt ports, you have to carry adapters for everything.

Network Card: 9/10 It's a MIMU card, UNLIKE the Dell, I get better speedtest benchmarks across the board with the Helios 300. I would have preferred a Killer car, but this is still a good performing adapter for the price.

Upgradability: .7/10(for a laptop). The Dell scores higher here because the entire back comes off with one screw, which makes upgrading a cleaning easier. However, the only real advantage you get with the dell is being able to clean out dust. the same upgrades are easiliy accessable. Some people say their's didnt come with a cage, well, my did. Dell also has a thunderbolt so you can add an external chassis and upgrade the GPU.. for the cost of doing so, you might as well get a dedicated desktop. Not sure I see the point, this laptop will last for several years.

SSD/Hard Drive: 6/10 256 isn't going to cut it, but at least it's SSD(though not the fastest) The Dell wins where because it came with a smaller(but similar speed) SSD, but a 1tb secondardy disk. TB drives are cheap(under $100) and I happened to have a spare 750gb not being used, so I'm good.

Battery Life: I can't say, but honestly, if you're not plugged in, you're not running full speed, CPU/GPU cuts back(came as Dell). That's fine for most things but if you need ful performance, you want to be plugged in. This is really the same for any laptop. I assume this is adjustable somehwere, but I'm sure battery life would be short. I've heard that this laptop will go about 4-5 hours, but not under intense gameplay. Again, same for any laptop.

Build Quality 8/10 : Metal/PLastic combo. Similar to the Dell. The dell looks more 'professional' but this latop is not so edgy that I wouldn't feel out of place carrying it around as an adult. The top and KB tops are alluminum, the rest is plastic. Everythings seems solid.

Form Factor: It's fine, it's no larger than my work laptop, it's a big heavier becuse it actually has metal top and KB top.
Overall: I've got to give this a 9/10. I like it so much I'm cosidering selling my macbook and buying one of these. Reasons? While I prefer the display and sound on the Macbook, I can't stand the port configuration, the keyboard and the fact I'm stuck with 500gb of storage. I could buy two of these for what I can sell it for. Benchmarks on this laptop beat the cirtually every category. While I love MAC/OS for me... windows 10 and genstures and improved touchpads have closed the gap. Oh the touchpad is great on this one laptop. I'll summarize my review numbers and compare.

Postives: Speed.. CPU/GPU/RAM... overall performance and benchmarks compete with laptops selling for $500-1000 more. Best bang for buck.

Negatives: None that I care about... Small items: KB backlight is not adjustable, no thuderbolt port, dispay limits gameplay to 60fps(which is true for every laptop in this price range. Only 256ssd standard, but easily expandable.

Conlcusion: Heads an shoulders above the Dell 7557 at this price. Double the warrenty. The display is fine. It benchmarks with laptops selling for over $500 more and really beats the competition at this price point. Acer has been around for years, I've used their products for over 20 years now, and they've come a long way. '

What can I say about this laptop. I’ve had it for only a few hours. But I’m in love. The sleek style plus the beautiful packaging. Almost had a tear in my eye. Then I turned it on. Cortana kinda freaked me out but, years of horror films will do that to you.
After set up I did have to put an anti virus on. There is not one prep loaded.
Usually I take full advantage of that free trial of Norton or Macafe. It literally took seconds to download my anti virus of choice.
And then off to steam to recover my games. I started with Talos principal. For those of you who don’t know it’s a very pretty game. Something my old computer kicked on its little fans at top speeds to try to run only to glitch out at the home screen. Rip Toaster. This monster loaded and launched in moments, and now seeing it as it should be seen I know why my poor ol thing couldn’t manage.

I played with the fans just to hear them at top speed they aren’t loud at all. If your watching tv or listing to music you may not even hear them.

The WiFi set up is easy and almost flawless. I say almost because of human error. (You’d think I’d remember a password...) if I have issues with the connection I’ll report it later.

The display is a little smaller then my old pc but I was over it once I saw how pretty it was. I can run all my games at top spec with no drag. My once endless lag on games is now nonexistent. Colors are bright and clear.

I really like the fan placement as well some laptops seem to put the fans in the worst place seeing as it’s going to be on your lap...-.- Acer has one on the back side and one under that you will likely not ever fully cover if it’s resting on your lap.

Backlight on keypad is pleasing to the eye as well as the metal finish and cut of the computer. The touch pad is big and doesn’t have the right or left click segregation making it easy to
Use a touch pen or something like it. You can still click but without the keys that tend to
    Stick after sometime anyway.

Power button is built like a normal key and I’m the top right part of computer. Different but not a bad thing at all. The ac charging is quick and has lights to tell you when it’s charged. Num and caps lock also have a little light to imdecate they are on. Something my old device did not have.

As I said I will add to this review as time goes on. But I am not a single bit guilty about spending the money on myself that I did for this. It’s still new and up to date so it should last about 3 or 4 years before I start “making toast” again. Expression from my last device. So if you have the money I’d say do it. Usually I get a touch of buyers remorse when I blow cash like this but not this time. I know it was well worth it. When I looked up just a few parts I had value so
You are getting a lot more then you pay for. I recommend a case to go with it. Although it comes in a little black box that fits it sungly if you want to wait until next payday for acessorys.

Week later still loving it. ~~
I recommend getting an SSD for storage right now I’m using a TB external that I got from here on cyber Monday but if you can afford it just go with the SSD. installing it should be quick and easy according to the manual that comes with pc. Otherwise still great. Driver updates are quick and I actually love predator sense. It’s nifty and let’s me know how to take better care of my baby. I did invest in a cooling pad got it here on Amazon it’s 22$ with prime. And honestly is just a good idea if your a laptop in lap type of person. Still wonderful device as quick as the day I opened it and defrag is auto set to run once a week. (Because I forget haha) Acer teamed with Avast and/or malwhere bytes is the best for me I recommend it as to not interfere with gaming. Avast knows that you’re playing a game and will add it to a list so it doesn’t bug you about it again. MB Is obviously just good to have if you stream or DL often. I’m def proud to say I’m an Acer gal.

I bought this after spending a fair amount of time trying to find a reasonable gaming laptop under $2k to use with the  Oculus Rift + Touch Virtual Reality System - Windows , and I was not disappointed. Even the box the laptop came in made me feel like I had bought a premium laptop. The laptop itself is a little flashy, and shows every finger print, but it is a nice looking laptop. The one I bought only came with a 256 gig solid state drive, but I did have a spare 256 gig solid state drive that installed into the spare bay in under 5 minutes. It only has one USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) port, but it does have a USB 3.1 port (10 Gbps), so I bought the " Anker USB-C to 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub for USB Type-C Devices Including the new MacBook, ChromeBook Pixel and More (Silver Aluminum) " to plug in the three sensors and it works great.

    Very pleased with my purchase!

Je recommande l'Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Ordinateur Portable, Intel Core i7, GeForce GTX 1060, 15.6 FULL HD, 16 Go DDR4, 256 GB SSD.
